If the person giving the orders is with you on the trail obey in every detail; but if alone, obey such part of the orders as seems right, following your judgment for the balance.

“Have you told them?” X asked, circling Y who stared at the wall straight ahead, not acknowledging them or their team. “Or did you ask your medic to keep it a secret? Show them now.” Y moved stiffly, following the orders unwillingly. They pulled up the side of their top. Over their right hip was a dressing. “Take it off.” Y’s hands started trembling as they pulled off the dressing, letting their team see the half healed burn marking them.
Drill is where you young children learn to obey orders, and then how to keep your bodies primed for the fight. You do not want to have an unhealthy mind in an unhealthy body if you intend to follow a military career. Some of you will not be used to the concept of obeying orders. We suggest that you forget that attitude as well. You cannot be trusted to issue orders unless you first understand the need to obey them.

Caution 18: Armed and Thoughtful

Those in power wish very much to treat America’s armed public servants as an interest group. By glorifying and patronizing, they attempt to set law enforcement and military on one side, and America on the other. This is not necessarily an autocratic tactic – although autocrats love it – but it is a very American one.
To this, the final and essential defense is simple professional ethics. The motto “to serve and protect”….the oath to the Constitution….the moral decision to refuse an unjust order. That in the past they have often been honored more in the breach than in practice does not alter it. There is no substitute for the integrity of those who serve.
Don't be disgusted by the acts of our military, be disgusted by the people who give them those orders
