the Imperial Administration Divisions map for 'Oaren'
Fantasy Map for the Kingdom of Ylmara
apologies if you've talked about this before, but what is the reason for the imperial divisions being "straightened out" in comparison to the traditional borders? in my mind i'm comparing it to historical borders in, like, medieval europe vs state borders in the US. or is it for ingame rule reasons? much love :)
Thanks for the question! Im very glad that your mind went there because: The Bylazstibian Empire is a colonial Imperial power, the borders they set are very much mirroring how colonial powers divided America and Africa during their exploitation and exploration, the blatant disregard for the realms they rule over cause most of the later issues and struggles these outer realms deal with under Imperial rule. They have wide sweeping boundaries set just to keep things simplified for their own purposes and I wanted to hammer in that they were very much based on the colonial powers that gave everyone those ugly big square borders everywhere!
The game itself uses nodes on the over world, and the actual game area is grid based (to transfer assets between TTRPG, Classic jRPG, and Tactics if need be later)
Lore stuff:
The Imperials enjoy technology several centuries ahead of the realms they rule, and the Imperials stationed in these outer realms aren't even as equipped or advanced as the inner realms of the Empire.
In Oaren they are technologically equivalent to the mid-to-late medieval period and the Imperials are well into the Renaissance era: they keep their rule with cannon, plate mail, and early rifles: matchlock, wheel lock, and early flintlock. In contrast the "Old Country" Oarenian people have mostly chainmail and in the cities "New Country" they are working away to emulate the Imperial styles with early plate/half-plate - but there are tight restrictions on saltpeter, sulfur, charcoal (to make gunpowder) so the Oarenians largely use their new found knowledge and skills to fight each other instead of the Imperials who exploit them.
That's the jist of the setting, uhhm
Tldr: Imperials are a colonial power and everyone else has to suffer them, they are the antagonist that drives the main story, but in the background while each realms story takes place in the forefront (within the empires rules and regulations)
Thanks again for the question
