Philadelphia is a 1993 American legal drama film starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. Filmed on location in its namesake city, it tells the story of attorney Andrew Beckett (Hanks) who comes to ask a personal injury attorney, Joe Miller (Washington), to help him sue his former law firm, who fired him after discovering he was gay and that he had AIDS. Philadelphia is one of the first mainstream Hollywood films not only to explicitly address HIV/AIDS and homophobia, but also to portray gay people in a positive light. It premiered in Los Angeles on December 14, 1993 in a benefit for the AIDS Project. It grossed $206.7 million worldwide, becoming the 9th highest-grossing film of 1993. In 2025, the film was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."

Released as a single in February 1994, the song was a hit in many countries, topping the singles charts of Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway. In the US, the single peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Springsteen's 12th and most recent top-10 hit as of 2026. The song received critical acclaim, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television. The song is listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
