Topical Powder: 100,000 USP nystatin units per gram in a talc base
Topical Cream: 100,000 USP nystatin units per gram in an aqueous, vanishing cream base
Topical Ointment: 100,000 USP nystatin units per gram in a hydrophobic base
For the topical treatment of cutaneous or mucocutaneous mycotic infections caused by Candida [Monilia] albicans and other susceptible Candida species: Apply liberally to the affected area 2-3 times a day. Very moist lesions are best treated with the topical dusting powder.
Pharmacology/Pharmacokinetics:
Nystatin is an antimycotic polyene antibiotic obtained from Streptomyces noursei. Its mechanism of action is by binding to sterols in the cell membrane of susceptible Candida species and changing the permeability of the cell membrane. Nystatin is both fungicidal and fungistatic against many fungi. Nystatin is not absorbed from intact skin or mucous membranes.
Drug Interactions:
No known clinically significant drug interactions exist.
Contraindications/Precautions:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component. Cream, ointment, and powder preparations are not to be used in ophthalmic, intravaginal, oral, or systemic infections. Oral nystatin is not intended to be used for treatment of systemic mycoses. Pregnancy Category C.
Adverse Effects:
Topical adverse effects are rare but may include burning, itching, rash, and pain on application. Adverse effects after oral treatment are rare and mild but could include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, vomiting, gastrointestinal distress, rash, tachycardia, bronchospasm, and facial swelling.
Take at even intervals, preferably around the clock.
Complete full course of therapy unless otherwise directed.
Shake suspension well before using.
Use only for the condition for which it was prescribed.
Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and children.
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as possible.
Contact a physician if the above side effects are severe or persistent.
