Part of my internship includes Cheetah Project which is part of a national observation project to study how cheetahs spend their time in captivity. We record what the cheetahs do every minute on the minute for half an hour. The project can be kind of dull because a) cheetahs sleep a minimum of 12-13 hours a day and b) our like to hide in the ravine, behind rocks, and at the top of the hill where you can barely see them. Still, I really enjoy it because it's in a slow part of the zoo, cheetahs are awesome, and sometimes Ken the keeper shows up. Our male cheetah, Spidi, recently returned from visiting some lady cheetahs in Ohio, much to both Ken and Spidi's delight. When Ken comes to the enclosure, Spidi gets up, walks to the visible part of the enclosure and starts purring (which is adorable). On the other hand, our female Nyika really doesn't care unless Ken has food. The other day I was doing observation and the cheetahs were sleeping the whole time. Ken showed up and asked if they were still hanging out in the ravine. I nodded and he shook his head, shouting "Hey!" Down at Spidi. "Why aren't you do anything? Come on, get up!" Spidi woke up and started climbing the hill to get a better look at Ken. Ken turned to me and said, "Now you have something to observe," and walked away down the path. We have super limited keeper interaction, but I'm pretty happy with the little we have.
