nyclust so what do you do? Sign up for all of them and get a sitter til u get a place? I think we've got one that will work but it seems like such a weird system---and pretty impossible for working moms
You know how bedbug-paranoid I am (and why) and even I don't freak out about library books. If I were in NYC or DeKalb (which has a HUUUUUGE bedbug problem in almost every residential building) I'd feel differently, but unless you KNOW, you're probably ok. Bedbugs are like headlice, basically. About the same likelihood of getting it, hard to get rid of. You're going to be exposed ANYWHERE YOU GO, but the chances of getting an infestation are smaller. Riskiest are the things you never know about.

Soo..what do I do about the bedbugs in libraries? I visit and get materials at least a couple of times a week and although I don't know of any at our local branch, I know some were found at the university's library. Last time I was in our branch the librarian was wearing surgical gloves to re-shelve and I got freaked out. Any tips for avoiding an infestation? I really don't want to give up going to the library!
Well, to begin with read this article about how you really don't need to freak out about bedbugs. Â I have never heard of a bedbug infestation in a library before that new york times article and when librarians get together we LOVE to talk about the freaky stuff that happens in libraries. Â I have heard so many stories of naked people wandering through libraries, patrons who call in and request that librarians sing to them, patrons changing poopy diapers ON TOP OF BOOKS (side note: I discarded those books right away) ... but I had never heard of a bedbug infestation.
Patrons also tend to be very concious about potential problems. Â I have patrons return books in bags all the time because someone at their house has a cold or the flu. Â They point out the tiniest of tears to us and write us long mea culpa letters. Â I have faith that a patron dealing with a bedbug infestation would want nothing less than to pass that infestation on to other people and would warn us about those books in advance.
That said, library books have potentially been used by dozens of people before you. Â All the shelvers here at my library always wear gloves just because they touch hundreds and hundreds of books, usually less than 48 hours after they've been dropped off by the public and studies show that flu germs can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours. Â Don't lick your library books, wash your hands often, and don't sweat it too much.
it's just that new york city seems like the kind of place that could make me feel something
even if it's not quite what i'm expecting. even if it's pain.
