Description: In the 1950s, the BaTonga people were forced to relocate from their ancestral home in the Zambezi Valley by colonists building a dam. They warned the workers that where they were building was the home of a river God named Nyaminyami. A year later, a flood destroyed the dam, killing most of the workers. Bodies of the deceased were not found, so the widows and BaTonga sacrificed a black calf in hopes this would allow the God to return the bodies. The next day, the calf was gone, replaced by the missing bodies.

Nyaminyami is a river god who lived in the Zambezi river and is believed to protect the Lozi and Tonga people, giving them sustenance in difficult times. It is said that in the 1950s, the snake-like creature was provoked by whites when they built Kariba dam, separating him from his wife.
