Thanks for the ask! Not What You Wanted is on an unintentional hold of sorts, I suppose. It's more that I've been lowkey working on it and am frustrated because it is not cooperating, and my mind is struggling to translate thoughts into words.

I've taken a step back and have been working on other projects, trying to let my brain rest and simmer. I hope to have more chapters ready soon, but don't want to make any promises that I might struggle to uphold.

4. Are there any other fic writers you admire? If so, who and why?

Oh god yes, absolutely. Right now, I’m in a constant state of goggling over @tierfal​ because she has the tightest grasp on in-character internal narration that I’ve stumbled on (no seriously, read anything FMA she’s written and I guarantee you feel like Ed himself is dictating every word). I’m also loving @blackkatmagic​‘s stuff with Naruto, because of how imaginative Kat is about tying in different possibilities and it’s all so INTENSE. There’s loads more, but those two are the first to come to mind and if I started, I wouldn’t stop.

12. A fic you wish you had written better, and why?

Honestly, anything over a year old is subject to “I wish I had wrote this better” but the biggest one is probably my very first fic. It still gets a fair amount of attention, for all that it’s seven years old by now, but it’s just so heavy-handed in parts and awkward in others and i’m making quite the face right now thinking about it.

16. Do you have structured ideas of how your story is supposed to go, or make it up as you write?

I tend to work best if I have broad strokes of how I want it to go, with clearly defined beginnings and endings, and then I can muddle about with the rest as I see fit. AssholeJohn, for instance, is working out like this. So is Shimmer In Your Shine, though that one is a little less defined than I really want it.

Okay, I cheated, because my most recent WIP is ... well, everything’s all in one big document, so I just went to the last full page of the chapter I’m going to post next and did this from here. But I’ll be nice and give y’all one from A!J too.

First from shimmer in your shine: 

Kurapika has emerged from the shower, the smell of clean, wet skin wafting from him in gently billowing clouds of steam. His hair is slicked back and dark with water, a few of the shorter hairs from his bangs escaping to wisp around his forehead and heat-flushed cheeks. He looks up at Leorio, towel wrapped around his shoulders, shorts slung low around his hips, and one eyebrow raised. His mouth is tilted in a teasing smile. “Are you going to take a shower, or are you just going to stand out here all night like a weirdo?”

“Pfe! I’m not a weirdo!”

Next from (Never) What You Wanted:

“I thought I wasn’t invited to that anymore,” you say, surprised, and Jade flashes you a quick, wide smile, her cheeks dimpling.

“Guess again, buckaroo. Rose wants to talk to you a bit more, and it’ll be a good chance for you and Dave to maybe get back on track to at least friendship.” She tugs lightly at one of your earlobes, then, in the middle of your offended squawk, leans down and hugs you. It’s awkward with the angles you’re both at, but even half-choked by Jade’s hair, you reach up and hug her back.

If you hold her just a bit too tightly, neither of you mentions it.
