I’ve always been rather bothered by Women’s Month. In my experience, it was always marked by all of the rich white ladies taking time off work to go hang out at the NW Women’s Show in Seattle and get day drunk.
I worked at JoAnn’s all through high school, and for the full month after that, these entitled snoots would come into the store and demand I stretch the coupon they received there. They were always super rude.
Years and years later, after I joined the corporate job machine, I was encouraged by those same rich white women to go with them (I am by no means rich, but I am white), but I just couldn’t. I couldn’t shake the feelings I got when my manager would swan off to hang out at the NW Women’s Show, and I would get stuck with 14 hour days to open and close the store. At 16 years old.
And now that I am more aware than ever about gender, it feels so exclusionary. Would a transwoman be welcome in that space? How does a genderfluid person feel attending? My trans son is not welcome, I know that.
I don’t know. I’m glad it’s not happening this year.
