i think the cruelest thing in the world is that emergency migraine meds are blister packaged. like you’re telling me that they expect a person with a migraine to spend several seconds trying to convince their motor skills to open a tiny little package??
i've had migraines for as long as i can remember.
i have brain damage. i've had two TBIs, and i have epilepsy. migraines are part and parcel with my brain and nervous system, which has been wired wrong for so long that i can't tell if i was ever wired right.
i've learned to deal with it. "that sounds horrible," people say about experiences that are mundane to me. i see the visual aura start and pop an imitrex and some advil. i'd know the purple taste of zofran ODT anywhere, just like i knew the pink flavour of amoxicillin when i was a child with chronic ear infections. i cope.
today i met a new doctor. she saw my imitrex rx in the file and asked me about my migraines. and then she told me there was another option. i asked if my insurance would cover it. she was honest that she didn't know, but she'd fight for me to get this new medication.
it was a good appointment. i got some labs i needed and refills for things, including my AED that i desperately need. she sent me with samples of the new migraine med, which i agreed to try. in the car, i realized i was starting to get a migraine, so i took the new med. i didn't have advil with me. i wasn't expecting much.
five minutes, and the sharp edge of the ache was duller. half an hour, and i was at least as good as the imitrex, advil, and a dark, quiet room can do in a few hours.
it's not a miracle drug. there isn't one. but it's relief, and it's faster than any relief i've ever gotten from a migraine, short of an IV cocktail at the ER. i can function. i'm not throwing up. i'm tired with a mild, dull ache in my skull, but i can sit in the car in daylight. it's good.
anyway, if you're like me and have half a dozen migraines that you can cope with "well enough" with a triptan, you might ask your doctor if nurtec might work for you. i'm not being paid for this (if you work for nurtec, hit me up if you wanna pay me lmao) but it worked so well that i wanted to share.
I've been taking nurtec for chronic migraine for like 2 years or so now, every other day, and now it's impossible to wean off of. I ran out of it this week because my prior authorization didn't get renewed in time, and so I didn't get my dose yesterday morning, and by 7pm I had a headache. I still have a headache. It's... kind of a migraine. It's kind of not. It's making concentrating on anything very difficult.
I really can't recommend taking this as a preventative because it's so addictive, and no one is talking about how addictive it it. There's like nothing online about it. Nothing about withdrawal symptoms. Just "nurtec doesn't cause rebound headaches." Well it sure as fuck causes something.
Seriously just don't take it. Not every other day.
Took Nurtec for the first time last night during one of the worst migraines of my life.
I have zero pain today.
I'm not? Dizzy?
I can see Too Well.
I'm still slightly sedated despite sleeping 13 hours straight.
Fuck Debby the Hurricane. She sucked and I'm glad she's gone.
