Gary Numan I, Assassin 1982 Beggar's Banquet
Gary was/is a prolific artist driven by innovation. In the 3 years since mainstream breakhrough with his band Tubeway Army, he crested the UK single charts twice with "Are Friends Electric?" and "Cars", and generated a half-dozen studio albums. In that time, he pushed the envelope of electronic music by channeling synthesizers through guitar effect pedals. For I, Assassin he sought out some backup, via session stalwart and bass gangsta Pino Palladino (currently with The Who). His warm and funky fretless came to be the defining sound to Gary's ears, and it got pushed to the forefront of the mix. While this album got lost in the weeds of an otherwise long and fruitful career, I find it a worthwhile artifact for it's featuring of that fretless bass, a critically underemployed instrument.
This was a Discogs find, unopened virgin vinyl for less than ten bucks.
