Three Mile Island: Fourteen Years Apart
Here is a color image taken recently along with a black and white one made in 2012 (when I was having a show of my photographs at Franklin & Marshall College). Unit One must have been still operating at that earlier time—note steam coming from two of the four cooling towers.
The place is infamous for an accident that occurred back in 1979 when Unit Two partially melted down. The result was that it was taken off line and sealed up (for time immemorial, I assume). Three Mile Island is currently back in the news as Microsoft wants to re-fire Unit One (the unharmed reactor at the site) to power its AI.
We're on the Susquehanna River just south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Two images by Richard Koenig; taken in 2012 and June 2nd 2026.
