You watched him from a distance, smiling softly. His gangly movements were as chaotic as his thoughts, a flurry of exaggerated gestures and wild expressions that were so unmistakably Nuka. It was one of the things you loved most about him—his unfiltered energy, even if it often veered into frustration.
---
Nuka paced erratically near the termite mound, tail lashing as his muttering filled the air. “Kovu this, Kovu that... oh, Kovu, you’re so perfect,” he sneered, mimicking Zira’s sharp tone before swiping at a nearby rock and sending it tumbling.
“Nuka!” you called, trotting up to him.
He stopped mid-pace, nearly tripping over his own paws, and turned to you. “Oh, hey, [Y/N]. Here to remind me how much better Kovu is? Or maybe to tell me to stop whining, like Mother does?”
You rolled your eyes, nuzzling his scruffy mane affectionately. “No, I’m here because I care about you, you dork. What’s got you so worked up today?”
He let out a dramatic sigh, flopping onto his back with a thud. “Oh, you know, the usual. Kovu’s out there being Zira’s perfect little prodigy, and I’m stuck here... existing.” He threw his paws in the air for emphasis. “I mean, what’s the point? No one takes me seriously anyway!”
Sitting beside him, you tilted your head and playfully flicked his ear with your paw. “That’s not true. I take you seriously.”
Nuka sat up abruptly, his mane sticking out in every direction as he stared at you. “You do?” His voice was so genuinely surprised that it almost broke your heart.
“Of course I do,” you said, brushing your head against his. “You’re smart, funny, and way more loyal than you give yourself credit for. You don’t need Zira’s approval to prove how great you are.”
His tail twitched as he looked at you, a crooked smile tugging at his lips. “I guess you have a point. But you’re biased, you know. You’re my girlfriend.”
“Maybe,” you teased, “but that doesn’t make me wrong.”
Nuka chuckled, his usual bravado creeping back. “Well, when you put it like that, I guess I am pretty great, huh?” He puffed out his chest, standing up and striking a ridiculous pose.
“You’re amazing,” you said with a laugh, swatting at him playfully. “And if anyone tells you otherwise, they’ll have to deal with me.”
“Aw, my fierce little lioness,” he said, grinning. “You know, with you by my side, I might actually stand a chance at taking over someday. We’ll rule the Outlands together! Just imagine it—you and me, the ultimate power couple.”
“Let’s start by getting you something to eat,” you said, nudging him toward the direction of the termite hill. “You’re much more charming when you’re not starving.”
Nuka laughed, bounding ahead with exaggerated enthusiasm. “Fine, fine. But you’re doing the hunting this time!”
You rolled your eyes but followed him, your heart warm with affection. Nuka might not see it yet, but to you, he was already a king—and no amount of Kovu comparisons could change that.
