I'm sorry, but that's nonsense.

Belle isn't the Beast's prisoner anymore by the time Gaston leads the mob to the castle. She's safe at home. Gaston does just the opposite of trying to rescue her – he locks her up so she won't try to stop him from killing the Beast!

And if you think Gaston is genuinely trying to protect the village from the Beast, I'd like to know what version of the movie you saw! That's just his excuse: his real motive is jealousy. His massive ego just can't bear the fact that the woman he wants prefers an ugly beast to him.

I also recently read the most ridiculous defense of Gaston's attempt to send Maurice to the insane asylum. The person wrote that when a young woman goes missing, and her father, who is already known for being "crazy," makes the most outlandish, impossible claim about what happened to her, the natural thing to suspect is that her father actually murdered her. They argued that Gaston probably suspects Maurice of having killed Belle and trying to cover it up with the story of the Beast.

Again, what version of the movie did they see?!

Gaston doesn't think Belle is missing – he doesn't seem to realize she was ever away from the village until she reveals that the Beast is real.

(Which is a part of the wonkiness of the movie's timeline: the changes in the weather make it seem as if weeks or even months pass, but the goings-on in the village, and the fact that none of the villagers seem to notice that Belle was ever gone, imply no more than a few days.)

It's made very clear that Gaston, and LeFou, and Monsieur d'Arque all know that Maurice is harmless, and that Gaston only convinces Monsieur d'Arque to threaten Maurice with the asylum in order to blackmail Belle into marrying him.
