Golems are figurs of Jewish folklore, which are created out of mud or clay. they used to be anthromorphic, that means that human traits, emotions, or intentions are attributed to non-human entities. mostly golems are controlled by the ones who summoned them. golems are not able to think and make decisions on their own.
this connects pretty well to the concept of a non player character which is also controlled by an AI or through an algorithm.
