Since you are still taking requests, I would love to see a 25 Lives crossover with any pairing of your choice. Thank you~ ^u^
Admin Notes: Ahhhhh… 25 Lives is so romantic…! I tear up thinking about it every time! I decided to write it as TagaHira since that’s my favorite. Hope you don’t mind. Anyways, I can’t believe how long this ended up being! Hopefully it’s worth the read. -Admin Hirahara
The very first time I remember you, you are blond, and you don’t love me back…
Amber eyes hid in embarrassment behind a mat of brown hair, glancing up at the man before them. In his hands, he was clutching a bouquet of flowers, meant for the apologetic golden eyed man in front of him. However, the bitter words hung in the air, causing Tagami to lose his thoughts completely. I’m sorry… Those were the most painful words. Of course Hirahara wouldn’t feel the same love back. He was still pretty naive and childish, so it made sense that his love was unrequited. The flowers were breaking at the stems from how much Tagami was squeezing them, crinkling the paper with all his might just so he wouldn’t have to think.
Finally, Tagami let his arms hang at his side, letting out a huge sigh. This was fine too. As long as they could still be together, this was fine. If only he loved me back, he silently wished. But it wasn’t meant to be. Not, at least, in this life.
The next time you are a brunette, and you do…
“Tagami sure likes sitting in your lap,” an emerald eyed man said as he reached to pat the small black dog that was seated in Hirahara’s lap. The dog growled as the hand inched closer, causing the man to pull back. Tagami would guard Hirahara for all his life. He may only have been a dog, but the love he felt from the boy with golden eyes were genuine. And that was enough for him.
“He gets suuper defensive if anyone comes near me,” Hirahara explained, stroking the rough fur of the small dog. He’d found Tagami on the side of the road, sleeping in a dumpster. His amber eyes were so unique that Hirahara couldn’t help but pick him up. I’m going to name you Tagami, he had said, although he couldn’t remember why. “But I love him because of it!”
I love him, how Tagami had wished Hirahara had said those words in a previous life. How he wished he could embrace the boy with all his heart. But he could not. So instead, he got up and spun around in the boy’s lap one more time, before sitting back down and snuggling closer. He loves me. He huffed, slowly closing his eyes. That would be good enough for this life.
After a while I give up trying to guess if the colour of your hair means anything…
The last of the smoke died from the cigarette the elder man had been smoking. It wouldn’t be long, now. He was at that age when, any day, he expected the cold hand of death to whisk him away and take him to a different world. There had been nothing in this life for him. His weary amber eyes stared out the window as he put out the tobacco, sighing deeply.
Just then, a boy passed his window, looking like he was chasing a bird. It couldn’t be… Tagami thought, leaning out just a little to be sure. The orange haired boy was very young, and had managed to catch the bird in his hands. He wasn’t harming it, though, and instead, pat it gently on the head. “Good bird,” he smiled, letting it fly free. As he turned, his golden eyes met Tagami’s amber ones, and for that instant, they locked glances. The boy smiled and waved happily, running off again from whichever direction he came from.
So it was… Tagami sighed, leaning back from the window and lying on the floor. At least I got to see him once in this life. He thought to himself, wishing, if only, they had been the same age this time.
Because even when you don’t exist, I’m always in love with you…
“You always draw the same man,” Tagami’s director, an icy eyed man, pointed out. “But you always draw him so beautifully.” The artist put down his ink to look again at his masterpiece: a man with unruly hair and golden eyes.
“Yes, I like drawing him,” Tagami nodded, taking a few more strokes to make sure it was complete. “He’s my inspiration.” The director nodded, also beholding the beautiful work. It wasn’t anyone he had ever seen before, and he wondered where Tagami got the idea from. Tagami stared at the portrait, handing it to the other. “It’s done.” When the man took his leave with the portrait, the artist grabbed for his sketchbook and flipped through it.
He found himself doing this rather often lately, for he couldn’t stop thinking about the boy. His sketchbook was full of unfinished portraits, of what his love could look like next. He always has golden eyes, Tagami remembered, looking at his various designs. But I never know what he will look like. With that, he let the book drop back onto the table. In this life, his love went to his work, and he wished for someone to share his work with.
I remember most fondly those lifetimes where we get to grow up together…
The steady tapping of the drums rang through the wall that separated two apartment buildings. It was that time of day again. As soon as he heard the beat, Tagami grabbed his guitar and sat with his back to the wall, feeling the rhythm in the vibrations. With a few strums to give himself a sense of the beat, he began to play gently in rhythm with the stranger just on the other side. It was a quiet melody, but it echoed through the walls of the empty room.
The two continued like that for almost an entire hour, whether timed or not. This was the moments Tagami loved best. The person on the other side… he’d never really met him before. They saw each other a few times - getting the mail, taking out the trash, heading for work - but they rarely spoke. The amber eyed man was rather shy of the other golden eyed man, so their interactions were rather quick. However, in this moment, when their two instruments made the duet throughout the apartment, was the only time the two felt on the same wavelength.
Tagami knew without a doubt that the man on the other side felt it too, although they never talked about it. Maybe he remembers this time, Tagami thought, although there was a lot of doubt in his mind. It was impossible, and yet, one could always hope. Perhaps, one day, they’d be able to share the music together without anything separating them. Perhaps, one day, he’d build up the courage to knock on his neighbor’s door, and to quietly greet “I’m Tagami, it’s nice to meet you.” But for now, he let this quiet time remain as it was, enjoying it while he could.
When you share your secrets and sorrows and hiding places with me…
“How much farther is it?” The slower dark haired boy asked up to the faster light haired one.
“It’s just up this hill!” Hirahara called, waving every so often so Tagami couldn’t stop and take a rest. “I’m telling you, it’s my secret base! It’s the most beautiful place you’ll have ever seen!” Tagami couldn’t complain. He’d been the one to ask about it anyways, although he had never expected it to be such a nature trail. When they were almost up the entire mountain, the golden eyed boy took a straight cut into the forest, causing Tagami to run after him.
“Where are you-” He started, huffing when the boy finally stopped and spread his arms out, revealing a small hut of trees, just in front of a tree that forked. Beyond, the sun fell on the horizon, casting an orange glow to everything along the ground.
“Ta-da!“ Hirahara trumpeted, smiling. “My secret base!” It was lovely there, and Tagami’s immediate action was to scale the forked tree and take one side, allowing Hirahara to sit across from him. “I come here and watch the sunset, and let the light wash away my troubles.” The two stared off as the sun sunk more and more, until there was nothing but a shrivel of yellow left. Quietly, Tagami grabbed for Hirahara’s hand, and the other didn’t move it away.
I love how you play along with my bad ideas…
Tagami awoke in the middle of the night, looking across from him at his sibling who was sleeping in the other bed. He was still soundly asleep, so the amber eyed boy felt bad for having to wake him. “Psst…“ He whispered, causing Hirahara to stir just a little. “Hey, come on! Wake up.”
“Whaaaaat…?” The boy mumbled, rubbing his golden eyes until he was fully awake. “Tagami, it’s late…”
“Come on, you were the one who said you wanted to see the fireworks.” Tagami complained, dragging his younger brother out of bed. At long last, Hirahara was awake for sure, stretching. Although he was now his blood relation, Tagami still loved the golden eyed boy. It was a family love, and it made him want to do everything to protect his little brother from any outside world harms. This life has brought us closer, Tagami smiled, so I won’t waste it at all.
“Okay, Tagami, let’s go.” Hirahara grinned, and together, the two sneaked out the window of their house and ran along the river bank, hoping to get a glimpse of the new years fireworks that they had been forbidden to see. Hirahara was laughing, amazed that they had actually ran away, while Tagami smiled and pulled the other along, never wanting to let go of Hirahara’s hand.
Before you grow up and realize they’re bad ideas…
The two were the only ones away from the party, standing on the balcony as the chilly night air surrounded them and brought the pair closer. Finally, finally, we’re alone, Tagami thought, his heart practically giving out. The grand ball was the best way to meet, although the golden eyed man seemed rather nervous to be out there alone.
“I don’t think we should do this…” Hirahara finally broke the silence. “I don’t know…” As if to make sure he wouldn’t doubt the situation, Tagami stepped closer and placed his warm lips onto Hirahara’s. For a moment, at last, the other man was quiet, letting the kiss warm in in the night. When they broke away, Tagami wrapped his arms around the taller man, hugging him tightly.
“I love you,” He whispered, and the two continued to embrace for the rest of the night. Even if this is the last time we meet, I love you. Maybe Hirahara remembered, but most likely he didn’t. But still, in that moment, no matter how wrong it was, Tagami wished the moment would never end.
(And in our times together I have many many bad ideas…)
“Tagami…” the golden eyed man muttered, his vision going fuzzy. “I can’t see you anymore.” Tagami blinked back hot tears are he gripped Hirahara’s hand tighter, never wanting to let go. He was afraid if he did, then once again, this life would slip away too easily. It had been his fault anyways. He had been the one to walk into the enemy trap unknowingly. And here, his love had taken the bullet instead.
“Don’t you dare say that,” Tagami cried, his amber eyes straining to stay open. “Don’t you dare give up so easily.” It’s my fault. It’s my fault. He kept repeating in his head. Hirahara probably could tell that Tagami was blaming himself. In a last effort, he raised a hand to wipe away a tear that had gone down the other’s cheek, smiling his usually bright smile.
“It’s okay,” he muttered, as if to say I don’t blame you. But then his arm went limp and fell to the ground, and the color in his eyes slowly sank away. Tagami continued to call his name, hoping that just maybe, maybe, it wouldn’t end this way. He clutched the man tightly, even after help had finally arrived, and people were trying to pull the two away. The last thing he thought about was how cold Hirahara’s hands had become.
When we meet as adults you’re always much more discerning. I don’t blame you…
This would be the third time the amber eyed man tried to bring flowers for the person living inside of the garden like house. Once again, he had been greeted at the door, a smile plastered on the golden eyed man’s face. But it was needless to say he still wouldn’t accept the hand picked daisies that grew along the street from a low class worker with no significance. After all, Hirahara came from a wealthy family, while Tagami did not and worked very hard everyday to make his living.
“I just can’t,” the golden eyed man apologized, sympathetically smiling and taking the handful of flowers. “Please understand, I just can’t.“ I understand, Tagami sighed, nodding and tipping his hat as he walked back down the stone steps and to the door. But I want to show you that I will always love you. Tomorrow, then, he would try again. Perhaps, instead, he ought to pick the daffodils that grew around his work. They were a glorious yellow, ones that matched Hirahara perfectly.
Yet always, you forgive me…
Tagami woke up that morning feeling the ping of happiness in his heart. He shifted from the covers, hoping he wouldn’t wake the blond who was still sleeping in bed. The night before had been warm, and the amber eyed man felt like through all his lives, this one was the best. He slowly put on a pot of coffee, humming something he remembered from the past. It wasn’t long before he heard the other stir in the sheets, and he hurried back to the bedroom to meet the sleepy face.
“Good morning,” the man in the muttered, opening his golden eyes. He yawned and crawled out from under the covers, falling straight back into Tagami’s arms. “It’s cold… come back to bed.” He complained, making the shorter man smile like he’d never felt happiness before.
As if you understand what’s going on, and you’re making up for all the lifetimes in which one of us doesn’t exist…
The desert winds were strong that day, blowing up so much sand that the amber eyed man thought he should hurry to cover instead of taking his camels any further. It would be impossible to set up a tent, though, with the winds so high. If anything, it was most likely that he’d be covered by the dunes if he stopped moving. However, if he kept going, it was possible he’d fall off the peak and plummet to his doom. But he had to make it to the next city. He was sure to find who he was looking for there.
He’d traveled all his life; or at least, as far back as he could remember. The desert was endless, and town after town, he never found who he was looking for. A violet eyed man had warned him that his mission was futile. But surely, this next one would be the right place. Tagami could only hope as he continued to brave the storm, his camels pulling away and trying to run far away. Surely… Tagami thought, taking another brave step forward. Surely the next town.
And the ones where we just, barely, never meet…
The space center bustled with activity, the workers at the control center working tirelessly to make sure the spaceship would be launched perfectly without an issue. The amber eyed intern was actually not supposed to be in the room during launch. In fact, his very presence could potentially mess up the entire mission, with him walking around mindlessly through the control center. However, Tagami hadn’t been asked to leave yet, so he decided that he would stay put until he was absolutely shooed away.
One of the monitors showed an image of the man inside the spaceship, also sending back his checklist to make his voyage safe. He was mumbling something about being excited when he would return, and how he looked forward to seeing the universe around the earth. It was by chance that Tagami stared at the screen long enough to register the golden eyes of the smiling spaceman. Before Tagami could say anything, though, or even do anything, the countdown began, and there was a ringing in his ears of the liftoff of the shuttle.
They had almost met. They had almost been able to talk. Had Tagami applied for the job sooner… perhaps he and Hirahara could have shared conversations as they did in their past lives.
I hate those. I prefer the ones in which you kill me…
The proud lion never backed down to anyone. That’s what it meant to be king. If anyone came at him with swords or arrows, the feline could swipe away any blow and kill his opponent in one swift movement. The fury of the jungle resided in his amber eyes, a look that could make grown men tremble. The large cat had at last found his way into one of the cities, where he happily preyed upon those inhabitants without mercy. This was the way of nature, after all.
It was getting to be too much for the city, so they sent a soldier to go and slay the lion. With careful steps, that man, fully armored, emerged from the shadows, just as the lion devoured a cart left out. When the steps were heard by the lion, he spun around, ready to attack his next victim. Looking back at him was the soldier with golden eyes, sword in hand and shield at the ready. The lion stopped, staring back in some confusion. Oh, it’s you, he seemed to say as he took careful steps closer.
A sword never suited you, the lion roared, retreated a few steps before the pain of being stabbed burned into his mind. In a few more minutes, the sword was sure to plummet into his heart, ending his life right there. Still, to die by the hands he loved… perhaps it was revenge.
But when all’s said and done, I’d rather surrender to you in other ways…
The city skyline was reflected outside the window behind Hirahara, showing that the night was just starting and the lights were illuminating the city. Tagami had his hands pressed against the cold glass, staring straight into the golden orbs he loved over and over and over again. I love you, I love you. How those feelings always rushed in when he saw Hirahara again.
As Tagami leaned down for another kiss, he felt Hirahara’s arms around him, and heard the quiet mutter “hold me closer.” If only every life was like this. Tagami would cherish this one for as long as it lasted.
Even though each time, I know I’ll see you again, I always wonder…
The cold autumn wind was blowing his cloak so hard that it was starting to choke him. That’s it, it’s coming off… Tagami finally groaned, ripping it from his neck and letting it be carried off into the sky. He never wanted to see that brightly colored piece of cloth ever again. The forest did nothing to keep the wintry wind from sending shivers down his spine, but even the cold was better than getting killed by his own clothing.
“Ack!” Came a distressed cry from behind him. Tagami turned, his amber eyes alert and scanning for anyone who was planning on robbing him. Instead, he saw that his cloak had made contact with another person who was wearing equally fancy clothing. Perhaps another prince, he shrugged, walking over to remove the cloth from his face.
“Sorry, I didn’t think there was anyone else out here,” as he revealed the face of the other man, his eyes caught a glimpse of golden irises that were blinking away the light of the sun.
“It’s fine!” The man smiled as Tagami let the cloak drop from his hands. It was carried off again by the wind, this time, uninterrupted. “Your clothing… are you the prince from the other kingdom?” The man asked Tagami, who only nodded in surprise. “Oh, then our fathers are surely discussing things right now.”
“Right…” Tagami let out, clutching his fist tighter. “Hey… what’s your name?”
“I’m Hirahara,” the golden eyed man responded, a playful grin on his face. “What about you?”
Is this the last time? Is that really you?
Tagami had been taking a break from his art assignment by taking the time to sleep on one of the benches, his sketchpad covering his face to keep the sun from hurting his amber eyes. Again, it was rather hard to focus with all the noise in his dorm. Just as he was about to drift off into dream land, he heard a loud hiss followed by men yelling.
“Get back here, you damned cat!” Came the man, lumbering after a stray grey tabby who was running with fish in his mouth. He happened to leap right into Tagami’s lap, waking the student and causing him to sit upright. The cat stared up at his captor through frightened golden eyes, fearing the student would turn him in. “Hey, is that you’re cat?”
“Y-yes.” Tagami quickly said, stroking the kitten and taking the fish from his mouth. “He’s mine. I’m sorry for the trouble he caused you.” He reached for his wallet, promising to pay for the fish that was taken. “I’m sorry; he’s a rather cheerful troublemaker.” The man accepted the payment and went off, groaning about his missing fish. In the meantime, Tagami looked down at the cat in his arms. Smiling, he stood up and took his things, taking the tabby along with him.
“They don’t allow animals at the dorms,” he explained, unzipping his jacket and stuffing the cat in there. “So please bare with this, alright Hirahara?” He hurried away from that spot, planning to set up a litter box and explain to his roommate why they were now secretly raising a feline.
And what if you’re already perfectly happy without me?
They were standing out there, across the street again, sharing earphones and happily talking about whatever they were listening to. Tagami always saw the two going to school like this from his balcony. The way the taller boy’s arms would casually drape around the shorter azure eyed boy’s shoulders, how they would sometimes laugh at a joke Tagami could never hear… But he seemed happy.
There was no way Tagami could reach the golden eyed boy, not with their current situation. For one thing, in this life, Tagami had been cursed with a terrible illness, preventing him from going to school or even leaving the house. His yearning to go out always drew him to the balcony, where one day, he’d spotted the boy from a distance. He was laughing as he ran from his friend, but the two were always having fun. They seemed content with each other, as if the world around them didn’t exist, and they lived for each other.
He’s lucky, Tagami thought, only being able to see his love through the curtains. But still, if this was the only way he could see Hirahara again, then he would deal with it.
Ah, but I don’t blame you; I’ll never burn as brilliantly as you…
The wedding had been a grand and wondrous occasion. The couple had happily exchanged vows, and cut the cake together. Tagami couldn’t have asked for a more perfect scene. “Isn’t this great?” Hirahara asked, finally coming over to talk with the amber eyed man. “It’s like I’ve always imagined it.”
“It really is beautiful,” Tagami admitted, looking down at the floor before meeting eyes with his friend. “I’m really happy for you.” Hirahara smiled, gently punching Tagami in the shoulder.
“You’re the best friend I could ever ask for,” he smiled, slight tears starting to form in the corner of his eyes. “You’ve been so supportive…”
“Of course,” Tagami nodded, seeing the bride hurrying over to retrieve her groom. She touched Hirahara on the shoulder, whispered something in his ear, and the two giggled, waving goodbye to Tagami so they could go together to the dance floor. “That’s what friends are for…” Those last words hung in the air painfully, and Tagami felt like he was reliving his first life all over again.
It’s only fair that I should be the one to chase you across ten, twenty-five, a hundred lifetimes…
“Taaaaaaagami! Hey, Tagamiiii!” The irritating voice was complaining again, as radiant as the sun and as annoying as a mockingbird. If I don’t respond, maybe he’ll still think I’m sleeping. Tagami hoped, but to no avail. Soon, he felt someone hitting him in the gut, so he had no choice but to open his eyes. “Tagami! I knew you were awake!” Hirahara smiled, pulling the green cap further on his head.
“What do you want?” Tagami hissed, getting up from his comfy spot on the bed and putting on his matching uniform cap. “We just went on a mission, so that can’t be what you’re yelling about.”
“It’s not!” Hirahara exclaimed, bouncing a little as he tried to stay still. He looked like he was expecting Tagami to give him something, so the escort just quietly patted the other on the head. “Did you forget?” Hirahara asked when he realized Tagami still wasn’t going to do anything more.
“Forget what?” The amber eyed escort asked, wondering what on earth could be the problem.
“Today,” Hirahara said, “is Valentines day!” He revealed from behind him a poorly wrapped bag of broken chocolate, which looked like they were made from play dough. “I made these juuuuuust for you!”
“You’re kidding…” Tagami stared at the poorly presented gift. He took them anyways, and opened the bag up, getting an odd smell of sweetness and peppers. As he took one and put it in his mouth, Hirahara began explaining that he put hot sauce in the red ones to give them their color. Tagami immediately spit it back out. “You’re awful at making chocolates.” He complained, handing the bag back.
“But I worked hard on these…” Hirahara stared down at his denied gift. “Kirika didn’t even help me make these…” He was suddenly embraced with a tight hug, one he really wasn’t expecting to get all of a sudden. “Eh? Tagami?”
“I know, dummy,” he sighed, refusing to let go no matter how much Hirahara squirmed. “I know you worked hard. So thank you.” The golden eyed escort was still really confused as to what was going on, but he didn’t push Tagami away at all. The warmth, for some reason, was familiar, and it was a rather nice feeling.

When Mr. Yukimura opens the book with the kaikens, 6 of them are missing. However, at the beginning there were only 5 Oni, therefore Noshiko had to sacrifice only 5 tails. So where is the missing tail?
1) calicokat once noted that
Fire armour around Kira might be Noshiko's first tail.
Kira told Scott, that the fire appeared a couple of months ago. Right around the time the Nemeton collapsed. We also know that Noshiko can't control lightning, her daughter's powers are different from hers.
Noshiko might be a fire kitsune.
Fire kitsunes are known as quick tempered, emotional, prone to fits of pique and rage (sounds familiar). They can drain heat (like taking a hot light bulb with a bare hand?). They draw life-giving energies like sexual and emotional. If it's a passionate affair and there is an overabundance of both, no harm to the partner is done.
Lightning is a corresponding element to fire. Fire kitsunes can draw heat from different sources, except ice and cold water. And especially good with kitsunebi - fox-fire (fireflies).
2) Stiles used the last kaiken to get the ownership over the Oni. And a firefly in Noshiko's palm died.
The first tail might be a sacrifice for control over the oni.
And because the youngest tail (in our case the first) is the weakest it is overpowered by the oldest tail (the ninth kaiken).

Together with calicocat we are working on Stiles the Cerberus idea, so I decided to write down all instances of switching from "We" to "I" in Nogitsune's and Dark!Stiles (Void) speech.
Stiles: If it turns out to be something like triplets that form into, like, a three-headed hound of hell, I’m seriously not up for that.
1) The basement of Eichen House. Illusion. (In reality, the coyote den)
Stiles: Who's there? Who are you?!
Nogitsune: Watakushi dake dewa nai. (It's not only me.)
Stiles: What?
Nogitsune: Kore wa warera no koto na no da. (This is our business.)
Stiles: I don’t... I don't understand.
Nogitsune: Not "who are you", Stiles. "Who are we".
Watakushi = I, Warera = ours
Nogi introduces himself to Stiles and asks philosophical questions about Ego. Notice that Nogi does refer to himself in first-person, but hints that there is another interested party.
Nogitsune: It's getting colder, Stiles. Did you notice, that we've stopped shivering? <...> Our speech is starting to thicken. Then comes fatigue. Confusion. We're going to die if we don't get out of here.
Stiles: Stop saying it. Stop saying "we".
Nogitsune: We're just trying to keep you from freezing to death. You better get up, Stiles. <...> We're trying to save you, Stiles. We're trying to save your life.
Now Nogi refers to himself and Stiles as "we". He describes physical things happening to Stiles' body as if it affects his body too. Once Stiles demands to stop using "we", Nogi switches to "we"+"you". Confusing? Not if we remember that there is Third party. Mister X.
Look at these three dots and think of them as three separate identities, who share one body. In this exact moment, Stiles is in control of the body, however the cold affects all three. Mister X (who is also Stiles and is two-in-one, but about it later) can't talk, when "our" Stiles is awake, so Nogi tries to keep his temper down and persuade Stiles to move.
Rafael: I'm saying the real question might be how do we know he is not still asleep?
Melissa: You mean he's been asleep the who-ole time?
Rafael: Well, people who sleepwalk can do crazy things.
1b) The basement of Eichen House. Illusion. (In reality, the coyote den)
Nogitsune: You don't understand, do you? It's a riddle. <...> Everyone has it, but no one can lose it.
Everybody has a Shadow (dark!self).
Scott: He was trying to protect us. Stiles was protecting us.
Derek: From himself.
Scott: <...> Stiles wasn't just up here struggling with himself. I think he was struggling not to do something.
2) MRI scanning room. Illusion. (The clinic.)
Nogitsune: Have you figured out my riddle yet? If you answer correctly, we might consider letting them go.
Stiles: Letting who go?
Nogitsune: Your friends. Your family. Everyone who ever meant something to you. We're going to destroy all of them, Stiles. One-by-one.
Stiles: Why?
Nogitsune: Everyone has it, but no one can lose it. What is it? <...>
Stiles: <...> A shadow.
Nogi pays a visit and insists that his riddles are important, that if Stiles realise the answer, Nogi and Mister X might reconsider their plans of killing everybody Stiles cares about. When Stiles remembers the answer, Mister X appears behind his shoulder.
Yes, it is a Shadow. The Shadow.
Melissa: Was what that? It sounded like a power surge.
Sheriff: Where is my son?
Indeed.
3) The hall. Reality. (The clinic.)
Noshiko: You know me? Then you remember, that I won't be deterred by your choice of host. Even if it's an innocent boy.
Shadow (Mister X): Are you threatening us?
Noshiko: Now I'm threatening you.
Shadow: We're not really afraid of your little fireflies.
Noshiko: If the oni can't defeat you, I know someone who will.
Noshiko thinks she is talking to Nogitsune, but she is talking to Shadow, who is currently in charge of the body, yet speaks for himself and Nogitsune. As we saw in Chris's past, Oni is a real threat to nogitsunes, however this one is not afraid of them. Why? Because Nogitsune "hides" in Stiles' body and Stiles' body has Spark magic and ability to take out fireflies. So does his Shadow.
4) Inside Deaton's clinic. Reality.
Shadow: Does it hurt? Hey, look at me. You should've done your readings, Scott. See, a nogitsune feeds off chaos, strife and pain. <...> All that pain. You took it all. Now, give it to me. You really need to learn. You really need to learn not to trust a fox. Mmm-mm. Know why? 'Cause they are tricksters. They will fool you. They'll full everyone.
Here it's Shadow, who separates himself from Nogitsune and talks about foxes in third person. However, he is asking to give the pain to him, because right now, he is in charge of the body and he can use Nogitsune's ability to draw pain. The powers of all identities are combined.
As Nogitsune is fed and powered up, the body can do new tricks like throwing werewolves around and teleportation.
5) The basement of Eichen House. Reality + Illusion.
Stiles: Oliver, listen to me. Stop. Oliver! Stop!
Nogitsune: Start with her!
Stiles: <...> Just let her go.
Nogitsune: Let me in.
Nogitsune: Stiiiiles, do you want her to leave here alive? Do you want us to leave? We can walk out of this place.
Stiles: Just let her go, please.
Nogitsune: Let me in. Let me in, Stiles! Let me in!
Stiles: Just let her go, pleeeease.
Nogitsune: Let me in, Stiles! Let me in! Let me in and I'll let her live. Let me in.
Nogitsune: Oliver!
Malia: Stiles?
This is the first time, when Nogitsune speaks only about himself. You let me in, I'll let her go. And this is the first time, when Nogitsune uses Stiles' body to call off Oliver (if you listen carefully, it's not Brunski's actor's voice, It's edited Dylan's.)
However, it's Shadow that walks out. We've seen that smirk.
A very familiar smirk with right corner of the lips. Not my gif.
6) Mr. Yukimura's classroom. Reality.
Shadow: <...> Daggers. I know what they are. Physeical representation of her tails. However the hell that works. <...> I know there is one left. I know it's the strongest.
Noshiko: I could barely move. I was going to die. With time slipping through my fingers, I knew I was making a terrible decision. <...> Possession by a fox spirit. For a powerful nogitsune, one that feeds off chaos, strife and pain, to take control of my weakened body, imbue it with power and use it as a weapon. But calling on a trickster spirit is a dangerous thing. They can have a very dark sense of humor.
7) Derek's loft. Reality.
Allison. Stop! Stop! This is exactly what he wants!
Shadow: Not exactly. I was kind of hoping Scott would be here. But I'm glad you have your guns out, 'cause you're not here to kill me, you're here to protect me.
8) The basement. Reality.
Shadow: Why that kanji? Why "self"?
Noshiko: To signify that Rhys died as himself. Because Rhys wasn't a monster. Not like you.
Shadow: If I'm such a monster, why'd you call off the oni? What happened to the woman, who called for chaos, strife and pain to descend upon everything and everyone? What happened?
Noshiko: I don't want it anymore.
Shadow: I do.
This one is difficult. But look, Shadow compares himself to Noshiko, to the woman who desired chaos. Here lies the difference. Nogitsune "feeds off", it's his food. Noshiko wanted for Nogitsune "to take control of my weakened body, imbue it with power and use it as a weapon." She wanted means of vengeance, she doesn't anymore. But Shadow does.
Also note. Shadow uses "woman". If this is Nogitsune talking to another kitsune, he should use "fox". Satomi, the werewolf lady, addressed Noshiko as "young fox". And Noshiko herself never uses "man" for Nogitsune, she literally calls him "wild fox".
9) McCall's house. Reality.
I'll skip the dialogue, but Shadow uses "I" all the time, except when he talks about Stiles.
Shadow: Really, Melissa? I shed one tear? That's all it takes? <...> You know he overheard it, right? You had no idea? <...> And Stiles, who heard like he hears everything? <...>
Melissa: This isn't you, Stiles.
Shadow: It is now.
10) Eichen house basement. Reality.
Speaking to Lydia Shadow always uses "I", refers to foxes in third person and to Stiles as "he".
11) The school ground. Reality.
Meeting Derek and the twins at the staircase Shadow says: "Did you brought us a present?". It might have been about Shadow+Nogitsune, but I'm pretty sure it was about Shadow and Oni.
12) The garden. Illusion.
Nogitsune: Like I promised, Stiles. We are going to kill aaaall of them. Ooone by ooone.
Nogitsune returns with his usual confusing riddles. Shadow stopped using "we", but Nogitsune continues.
Nogitsune reminds Stiles, that Shadow will kill all the people who offended Stiles, one by one. He tortured Scott, he destroyed the hospital, where Claudia died, he enjoyed the Oni cutting Isaac, he blew up the sheriff station, where his father spends all his time
Nogitsune: Between life and death.
Lydia: Bardo.
Nogitsune: But there are no peaceful deities here, Lydia. You are dying, Stiles. And now everybody you care about is dying too.
Stiles is dying. Shadow looks like he is dying too. So why Nogitsune doesn't care about dying himself? He is still in Shadow's copy-body.
Stiles: Why, why are you doing this?
Nogitsune: To win the game.
Because he has a black sense of humor, he knows how to play Go and he uses reverse psychology.
Nogitsune: Give up the game. You have no moves left.
Stiles: I do. A divine move.
Because Nogitsune plays with Shadow. Because Stiles sees "Introduction to Business" magazine. Risk&Reward. Because Nogitsune is a gambler.
Void: (To Scott) This was my game. (To Stiles and Lydia) You think you can beat me at my game?
Idiom "Beat someone at their own game" - use someone’s own methods to outdo them in their chosen activity.
TV-Trope "Beat Them at Their Own Game": Our hero is really in a pickle this time. The latest villain uses a unique weapon, technique or tactic which beats anything else the hero can do. So how does the hero get out of this? By using the same tactic himself!
You really need to learn not to trust a fox. Mmm-mm. Know why? 'Cause they are tricksters. They will fool you. They'll full everyone.
Last bit of monologue (painful to me) is left. Before it let me explain Mister X.
Mister X is Inner Stiles. Subconsciousness. His Ego. His Shadow Self. Mister X is both Light and Dark. Light Inner Stiles tries to warn his friends with a picture of a tree and a chess-board, he fights with Dark Inner Stiles on the hospital Roof, sends his father away from the sheriff station. "Our" Stiles doesn't remember any of it. Nor good deeds, nor bad. Until he is "reborn".
Stiles: I remember everything I did, Scott. I remember pushing that sword into you. I remember twisting it.
Scott: It wasn't you.
Stiles: Yeah, but I remember it. You guys gotta promise me. You can't let anybody else get hurt because of me.
However, with time Dark Inner Stiles takes over completely and becomes Vengeful Shadow. This Vengeance, this Darkness becomes almost a full new person, a new identity (like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde), who speaks about Stiles in third person.
In Jungian psychology, the shadow or "shadow aspect" may refer to (1) an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one's personality, the shadow is largely negative, or (2) the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious. There are, however, positive aspects which may also remain hidden in one's shadow (especially in people with low self-esteem).[1] Contrary to a Freudian definition of shadow, therefore, the Jungian shadow can include everything outside the light of consciousness, and may be positive or negative. "Everyone carries a shadow," Jung wrote, "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is."
Stiles's Shadow is indeed dark.
The impact of such 'confrontation with the shadow produces at first a dead balance, a standstill that hampers moral decisions and makes convictions ineffective...tenebrositas, chaos, melancholia'
You don't fight Shadow, you acknowledge it and reincorporate into the personality.
'Assimilation of the shadow gives a man body, so to speak', and provides thereby a launching-pad for further individuation.
Now, wrapping up. I've been writing this small meta for 5 hours.
Shadow: Divine move? Divine move? You think you have any moves at all? You can kill the Oni. But me? Me? I'm a thousand years old. You can't kill me!
Lydia: But we can change you!
Shadow: <...> Change the host.
Everything sounds so well and explains so neatly until this "1000 years old".
Stiles has a strong mind and Nogitsune has to demand to "let him in", he doesn't take control easily. And there is no need for reverse psychology anymore, so it is Shadow. The whole point is to kill Stiles' Darkness. So how is it 1000 years old?
Plausible explanation, that being separated from Stiles Shadow merged with Nogitsune. "We" (We're not really afraid of your little fireflies. ?) into "I" (You can't kill me). Shadow is not a person, it is feelings, "everything that the subject refuses to acknowledge about himself". So Shadow now thinks, or rather "gets a feeling, awareness" that it is 1000 years old.
I can't say I like this explanation very much. That sentence is to throw the audience from the right course, to believe they are killing Nogitsune and it works well.
Noshiko can be a nogitsune (wild kitsune). She can be an inari kitsune (young Noshiko's white face, red lips like a kitsune mask). Either way, she was not the one playing Go with Void. All the way she thought she fought the Nogitsune (and she was right to a degree). She fought "my monster to bury". She was very emotional and passionate about it, but not that strategic.
1) Noshiko: "Scott says he saw Stiles and Nogitsune playing Go. Important detail, perhaps even crucial."
Noshiko teaches Kira Go.
2) Kira asks her father where is her mother.
Yukimura: "I don't know where she is, but I do know she is trying to keep you out of it as long as possible"
Kira: "Well, she should have thought of it before she made me magically rebuild a samurai sword"
- I know a lot of it is going to be very strange for you. You're going to learn a lot quickly, Kira.
- Yeah, like board-games.
- In Korea we call it badoku. There are different styles of play: aggressive, passive, orthodox.
- Can you tell who is who?
- I know you are black. The novice players always go first...
- And white is the nogitsune.
- ...but these stones are placed in your mother's style, agressive.
- Yeah, but she put them down to represent the Nogitsune.
- Are you sure about that?
Mr. Yukimura tried to tell Kira that Noshiko is an aggressive person, she is on a war. He tried to stop Kira from going after her.
3) Kira faces her mother, when they all come to save Lydia.
Noshiko: "Kira, turn around and go home. Take your friends with you."
Kira: "I can't. When I looked at the game I realised who I was actually playing. You."
Again. Nogitsune has nothing to do with it. Noshiko told Kira to not get in her way, she was still going to kill Void with Oni. Kira tried to stop her. There was a long speech about a way of saving a host from Kira's part. She knew now that her mother is capable of killing a teenager. They didn't know if killing Void would kill Stiles too.
Void broke the last kaiken and took the control over the Oni to himself. Noshiko wasn't expecting it, at all. She thought the two defeated Oni were simply weak (new weaker tails).
Noshiko didn't want Scott to help Kira (with the sword). Mr. Yukimura persuaded her that in a war any ally, even a dog, is good.
By the way. I don't like Scott, but Allison's death wasn't his strategic fault (there was no strategy to speak of, the parties even didn't tell each other about "don't find me", "she tells not to find her" info). They knew that Noshiko controlled Oni, they thought that the Oni were on their side now, after Stiles was marked with "self" kanji. Scott went after Lydia to fight Void and to smell her wereabouts. Allison went with Kira to stop Noshiko. Nobody expected the change in ownership.
4) Noshiko to Stiles and Kira: "He made a powerful move by splitting the two of you".
Stiles: "So what's our move?"
Mr. Yukimura: "At this point you need a divine move."
Kira remembers the jar. Stiles remembers this talk, when breaking the illusion.
Also in the school Noshiko says: "You are the fox now" and "My power is yours now" to Kira.
Void and the Nogitsune's relationship is very complicated indeed. To figure it out you need to pay attention to the "we"-"I" switch (and season 4). I need a break and a whole new meta for it.
1) Eheh, so when Noshiko says to Void "If the oni can't defeat you, I know someone who will" we have a switch to Kira and the curtain fall for the ep.
Are we really that delusioned in Sterek reading of "the power of human love" scene ;)
2) And those nasty writers, eh, doing all they can to confuse us and lead astray. Void in Stiles' body uses "we" (like Rhys-Nogitsune did), but he uses "I", when in the fax body.
3) We are given two scenes of Void gaining the control actually. Both are very nuanced.
When Stiles wakes up after Melissa's shot of sleeping drug, he is still briefly himself. You can see his fear, when he meets Oni (he doesn't even scream for help, and Scott didn't tell him about the demons, Stiles has to think it's an another nightmare). As well as the trembling fingers, when Void opens Stiles' hand with a firefly in it.
The second one is in the MRI dream, where Rhys-Nogitsune asks Stiles the riddle again. Void overpowers the fox this time. Taking off the bandages, while Nogi screams his riddle again and again.
