It had to be storming, Louis thought miserably as flattened himself against the floor and scooted up just enough to see the compound spread out below him. Â His clothes were plastered to him and and the rain was dripping down his bangs into his eyes making it harder for him to do his job as the eye in the sky for his friends scattered in various area below him. Â The only saving grace to him was that at least it was a warm rain.
Louis set aside his annoyance and focused on the mission at hand. Â He flicked on his eyepiece and tuned it to night vision and carefully scanned the area. Â The eyepiece was programed to recognize his friends so he could easily see the color coded outline of each of them; Niall a green outline crouched in the darkness between two buildings, Liamâs blue outline moving slow and steady towards their goal, and Harryâs yellow outline back guarding their exit. Â That meant everyone else was a helpful red outline so he could see the guards easily.
âStill all clear, Payno,â Louis reported. Â He had his eyes on two guards that were doing a lazy patrol around the grounds.
Liam didnât reply, which was okay, but at the same time it was the first mission for the new recruit and Louis wasnât really sure of the kidâs abilities. Â Paul seemed to be really impressed with him, which meant Louis was willing to give Liam the benefit of the doubt, but he still needed the kid to prove himself.
A flash of lightning followed by a boom of thunder almost made Louis jump out of his skin. Â It was an awful night for a raid, but theyâd been planning it for weeks and they desperately needed the supplies. Â And it wasnât as bad as the time theyâd had to sabotage a prototype mech in the midst of near blizzard conditions.
Louis watched anxiously as Liam picked the lock into the warehouse. Â To his relief Liam made short work of it and Louis took one second to check where the guards were before giving Niall the all clear. Â Seconds later Niall and Liam disappeared into the warehouse.
âMight have a problem,â Harry said suddenly. Â To anyone else he wouldnât sound concerned, but Louis could hear the edge in his voice. Â âThereâs an armored truck coming.â
âTime to hit it lads,â Louis said. Â âGet what you can and get out.â
Louisâs heart pounded hard in his chest as he watched Niall and Liam appear from the warehouse, backpacks and dufflebags loaded with supplies. Â He waited until they were almost to the hole in the shield theyâd created before he abandoned his position. Â It was a little disconcerting to lose the high ground, but he was still able to easily navigate through the shadows to where the rest of the lads were waiting for him.
âGot us a good haul,â Niall said as he handed Louis one of the dufflebags.
âGood work lads, now letâs get out of here, yeah? Â Donât fancy being caught.â
Louis didnât breathe easy again until they were back at the hidden entrance to their hideout. Â He waited for Niall and Harry to go in first and was expecting Liam to follow behind, but when he didnât appear, Louis turned to look for him. Â He honestly couldnât believe what he was seeing.
âAre you serious? Â Weâre carrying bags full of stolen goods and you want to stop and feel the rain?â
Liam stayed where he was with his face turned up towards the sky. Â âIâve never felt the rain before.â
âGet in here you bloody idiot before you get us all caught,â Louis snarled.
Liam listened then, ducking through the doorway. Â Louis couldnât resist giving him a swift kick in the arse as Liam passed him into the hidden entrance.
