We interrupt this program of The Woods to bring you an installment of @geopsych 's summer treasure hunt: Category Number One, things growing where they're technically not supposed to.

This pokeweed, the large plant here, is a weed that I love. I've saved a little cluster of them, and they become a mighty, branching addition to the garden every summer. The volunteer Valley Oak, the plant with the lighter-green leaves, is a delight, though I will eventually pull it up. Our neighbors have two gorgeous Valley Oaks, and we planted one as well: stunning trees native to our microclimate. And the oxalis, that looks like clover, was probably planted by a previous owner and pops up yearly in several places. It has lovely pink flowers in spring. And the exuberant magenta blossom fell from the crape myrtle tree.
