The Boy by the Swings (a Mandela Catalogue fic)
Basically a fic I made of how I think Mark and Cesar met as kids :P
"Alright, we're here! Ready to have some fun?", Mark's mother asked him as she lifted him out of his car seat, he just stared back at her with unsureness on his face. "I guess...", he mumbled as she put him down. It was about a week before Mark, who was only four, would start Pre-K, and his mother decided a good way for him to get prepared was take him to the park, hoping he could at least interact with some of the other children there. Mark always kept to himself, and stayed close to his parents whenever they were out, and she just hoped that today, he'd make at least one friend, though because of how shy the little boy was, it was uncertain.
Mark stared out at the playground, watching the kids running around, before taking a step behind his mother, clinging onto her dress slightly. "Do I have to..?", he asked, looking up at her. Mrs. Heathcliff sighed, before bending down a bit. "Listen honey, I'm not saying you have to talk to everyone there, just maybe have a small conversation or two, I'm sure at least half of those kids are into the same things you like.", she said. Mark huffed as he looked away, his eyes staring down at the pavement. "But..I'm scared, mommy.." "I know you are, but wouldn't it be nice to have someone to talk to when I'm not here?" Mark pondered on this for a moment. He really didn't want to talk to anyone, but at the same time he felt like he wanted a friend, it was confusing for him. "Y..yeah..", he quietly said. Mrs. Heathcliff smiled at him, as she gave him a gentle push towards the playground. "Then go have fun, make a friend." He looked at her one more time, before hesitantly making his way over. Mark flinched as two screaming kids ran past him, he just awkwardly looked around, clutching his little arms to his chest as he observed the area around him. He turned back to see his mother now sitting on a nearby bench, once again giving him a small smile, and waving a hand.
Mark just turned around, scanning the area. Right now, he felt too scared to talk to anyone, and all these kids were playing far rougher and louder than he was comfortable with. Besides, he could see some small groups, and he just didn't want to walk in on them, and bother them. His eyes eventually settled on the swings, it was pretty empty there. Well, there was one boy sitting on one of the swings, gently swaying back and forth, his black hair shining in the sun. While nervous, Mark decided it was only just one kid, so it shouldn't be that bad. He slowly walked to the swing set, and climbed up onto one of the seats, about a few feet away from the boy. He noticed the boy look over at him, and Mark immediately turned his head the other way, daring not to look into the other's eyes. He was already starting to feel embarrassed, but he tried to ignore it, swinging his legs, kicking the air as he tried to get the swing to move. As he struggled, he peeked slightly at the boy next to him, who was still looking at him, a curious expression on his face. Mark turned away again, staring at the ground, unsure of what to do. Already, this felt too much for him, he just wanted to go back home already. Mark sniffled, as he tried to keep himself from crying, not just because of the boy staring at him, but also because he was frustrated that he couldn't get himself to swing high.
He squeezed his eyes shut, as he tried to fight the urge to spill his tears, clutching onto the chains of the swing, when he suddenly felt someone push him forward. He gasped a little as his eyes shot open, seeing that he was now swinging in the air. As he came back, he felt another push, and soon he was back, his little shoes raised up in his field of vision. He couldn't help but smile slightly, a small laugh escaped his lips as he kept going higher and higher, this was way more than he usually could go. Mark then remembered that someone was pushing him, and he tried to get a good look at the person behind him. It was a little hard to tell, so he tried to stop, but his feet couldn't really touch the ground. He tried waving his hand to signal to whoever it was to stop, but nothing. As he came back down, he mumbled a quiet "stop..", and soon he felt the chains being grabbed, eventually he stopped swinging. Mark got off, and turned around, to see it was the boy sitting across from him, who had pushed him. Mark immediately felt a bit scared, but he kept himself from running away.
The black haired boy smiled at him, putting his hands behind his back. "Hola! Cómo te llamas?", he asked. Mark just stared back at him, not understanding a word he just said. "...what?", he asked. The boy gave him a more understanding look, before trying again. "Oh uh.. sorry..what's your name?", he said. "Uh..Mark..", the small boy greeted, a bit of unsureness in his voice. The other boy put out his hand, smiling. "I'm Cesar!". Mark took hesitantly took his hand before shaking it. "Uh..h..hi..", he muttered, looking away shyly. Cesar turned his head a bit as he studied Mark. "What's wrong..?", he asked. "I..my mommy says I need to make a friend...but I just really wanna go home..I..I'm too scared to talk with anyone here..", he answered sheepishly. Cesar gave him another smile. "Then I can be your friend!", he said as he shot his arms up. "Really..?", Mark asked as he looked back at him. "Yeah! We can have fun, and play together, and..and draw and..", he started to ramble on and on about all the things they could do together. As he trailed on, Mark could feel a smile slowly start to appear on his face. For some reason, he felt like he was getting used to Cesar's presence, and he already seemed to like being near the boy. Compared to the other kids, sure Cesar seemed energetic, but he already could tell he's no where near as rough as the others. "Será muy divertido!", Cesar exclaimed, and Mark looked at him confused again.
"You talk funny, Cesar..", Mark said. Cesar then looked back at him. "Qué?" "I..I don't know what that means...", Mark said. Cesar then seemed to get it. "Ah, it's Spanish! Me and my family speak it! We recently moved here..", he explained, and Mark seemed to get it. "Oh..I don't really know Spanish.." "That's okay! I could help teach you!", Cesar suggested. Mark smiled as he looked at him. "Sure..I guess." It was a silent for a bit, before Cesar gestured to the seesaw. "Do you wanna play with me?", he asked. Mark nodded. "Perfecto!", Cesar cried, before stopping for a bit. "That means perfect..heh.." Mark laughed a bit, as the two boys ran over to the seesaw, taking turns going up and down. Mark no longer felt afraid, and he was actually having a great time with his new friend. The two soon went back to the swings, then they sat together in the grass, looking for nearby bugs. As Mark was having no luck, Cesar's voice caught his attention. "Mark! Look!". He turned to see a small ladybug on Cesar's finger, the two boys smiled as they stared at it. "Pretty...", he muttered.
A shadow soon loomed over the two, and Mark turned to see his mother, smiling down at the two. "Well, what do we have here?", she asked, and Mark smiled as he stood up. "Mommy! Look! I made a friend, his name is Cesar!", he said as he pointed to him. "I see..", she bent down as Cesar grabbed her hand and shook. "Hello Cesar, are you two having fun?" Cesar nodded excessively. "Yeah, we are, Mark's mom!" Mrs. Heathcliff chuckled a bit. "Please, you can just call me Mrs. Heathcliff.." Cesar stopped to process the word for a minute. "Momma, me and Cesar played on the seesaw together, and the swings, and he found this cool ladybug!". He looked back but frowned to see it was nowhere on Cesar's finger, meaning it flew away. "That sounds nice, however..I hate to ruin the moment, but Mark, it's time to go home." Mark's eyes widened as he looked up at her. "What?! But..but..I don't wanna go! I wanna play with Cesar some more!", he whined. "I know, honey. But it's close to dinnertime, and I'm sure you'll see Cesar again." Mark looked over at Cesar, who had a sad look on his face, but he nodded. "But what if he's not at Pre-K?", Mark asked worriedly. "I am going to Pre-K too!", Cesar objected. "Mandela Pre-K?", Mrs. Heathcliff asked. Cesar nodded, and Mrs. Heathcliff smiled down at Mark. "You hear that, honey? You and Cesar are going to the same school! Maybe you'll even get to be in the same class together!"
Mark gasped, as a big smile grew on his face. "YAAY!!", he shouted, wrapping his arms around Cesar. The other boy giggled as he hugged him back. Mrs. Heathcliff smiled at the sight, before patting her sons' shoulder gently. "Now come on, Mark. We need to go now." Mark sighed as he looked back at Cesar, before giving one more hug to the boy. "Bye Cesar..", he muttered. "Bye, Mark. I can't wait to see you again, amigo." "Ah, you know Spanish?", Mrs. Heathcliff asked as she took Mark's hand. "I speak it! And so does my parents!", Cesar said proudly. "That's nice, well, we have to go now, we'll see you again soon, goodbye Cesar.", Mrs. Heathcliff said as she started to walk away, Mark keeping his gaze towards Cesar. "Bye Mrs. Heapclip! Bye Mark!", he called, waving his arm like crazy. Mark smiled as he waved back, not looking back until they were now at the car, and he couldn't see Cesar anymore.
As they drove home, Mark talked all about Cesar to his mom, saying how nice he was, and how excited he was to see him again. Mrs. Heathcliff smiled, glad that her son finally found himself a friend.
