!Spoilers for the manga ahead!
Let me present you my newest headcanon:
Shin absolutely avoids going on big ships/cruises.
Let me explain.
We know Shin was in search of his father, which lead him to a cruise.
However, things didn't quite turn how Shin would have hoped, starting with Shin - after finally finding his dad after 4 years of search - witnessing Ando kill some guy.
Of course, Shin is afraid, confused, in shock.
Including this, boarding that ship came with a series of moments where Shin felt defenseless, powerless, helpless.
For starters, he had a gun pointed at him while not being able to escape the mans choke.
This is immediately followed by his dad denying he has a child (after clearly recognizing Shin - or at least I'm sure he did) and ordering to throw Shin overboard, which they did.
Later on, he was again choked pretty badly (by a creep, I might add), again not standing a chance against it.
After finding Ando again and talking to him, Shin gains hope that maybe, his dad loved him, or at least saved him one time (therefore having had some ounce of love for him at one point).
His dad immediately crushes that hope by pointing his gun at Shin.
Ouch.
After a turn of events, Shin points the gun at his dad, looking for answers. However, after being startled, Shin accidentally shoots his father.
And then, to top it off, Shin wittnesess his father dying on an exploding cruise. Explosion caused by the very shot wound Shin inflicted.
In most of these cases, Taro saves Shin (yay), but that doesn't erase Shins fear, and shock and especially Shin being defenseless. Mind you, he was 13 years old here, almost being killed several times. And I didn't even mention everything he discussed with Ando, which is another wound in its own.
Adding to that, this was the one and only time he saw his dad. His dad, who Shin searched for 4 whole years. His dad, who Shin thought would love him.
His dad, who immediately told the others to throw shin over board after seeing him, who pointed the gun at him and said/thought nasty things about Shin. However, at the end, Ando saved him and told him to live after dying and the ship exploding.
(Way to confuse your child, Ando.)
All of this happened in a day, probably a span of few hours, maybe less. Shin witnessed all of this. (At 13 years old!!)
We don't need to discuss how this is a major trauma for Shin. But back to my headcanon.
All of this happened on a cruise. Shin saw his father for the first and last time on that cruise, which I'm sure would lead to some association between Ando and cruises. Shin was threatened to death several times on that cruise, without being able to defend himself. Shin was absolutely powerless.
Thats why I think even years later, shin wouldn't step a foot on a cruise or anything similar. Because that wouldn't just remind him of that day, but his body probably screams him that nothing good comes with going on big ships.
In my head, Shin is afraid of cruises.
