A long time ago, when I was in school, I used to share a ride with a girl whose father ran a dairy farm, next to which was a poultry farm. And right by the gate, there was a butcher's shop. The girl would take quite some time getting ready so we would have to wait for her in front of the gate every morning, and every morning the smell of butchered poultry would overwhelm my senses. I didn't hate it or anything (I was quite used to raw meat and slaughter even as a kid) I would simply sit and watch as the slamming of the butcher's cleaver on the log board would wake the quiet morning up. For some reason, that particular smell and that particular shop is ingrained into my mind to this day, considering I only shared that ride with her for about 2 or so years and I barely went there afterwards.
After all these years, that same exact smell hit me today in my home. I don't have fresh chicken at home, and I wasn't even close to my kitchen. I don't think the clean, frozen chicken I have in my fridge could ever smell like that anyway. That smell is somehow more raw than any raw chicken I've dealt with, it's something else. I do not know why I suddenly smelt it again and it was only there for about a minute or so and I can't smell it anymore. I don't know what's going on.
