4) Think bigger We are currently managing our stress by clinging to the latest news and updates. Any morsel or scrap of information is devoured like a roll a toilet paper on a store shelf. There’s plenty of contradiction, misinformation, and downright conspiracy theory. If you are reading this in the United States right now, don’t even try to hide the truth… a month ago you were thinking something along the lines of “At least it’s not in my back yard”. Even if your aren’t finger-pointing or playing the blame game about who ate an exotic bat soup meal or which government is manufacturing bioweapons, it’s important that you read the BIGGER picture here! How big is this picture? Well, it’s as big as what ‘pandemic’ defines which is GLOBAL. Globally we are all here, in this same world, waking up to the same havoc each day. The walls of race, color, creed, sex, religion, and age have been crushed. They don’t exist in the eyes of this virus, and they certainly can’t exist within us. Now is the perfect time to release any bigotry, ignorance, racism, naivety or blame, and to truly come together and embrace your global neighbors, of course withOUT physical embrace. We are talking about a meeting-of-the-minds here, worldly humans! A hands-across-Mother-Earth so long as they be gloved and sanitized, shows us that our ‘back yard’ is shared ground. All kidding aside about social distancing, we have a wondrous opportunity NOW to ask “How important is it?”. As we all face or own mortality and the possible demise of any humankind sharing this planet with us, now is the time for letting go of distorted beliefs and truly waking up to an enlightened state. If you are ready to look into the bigger picture about your purpose, your role, your goals and how to plan them when we get past this storm, your gifts and where you can apply them, then please, let us look into that with you. 3) Understand others Noticing how touchy your friends and family are lately? Having an increase in your anger and/or anxiety? Feeling miffed by rudeness in the empty-shelved grocery lines? The surface expressions of anger, bad-mannered or offensive behavior have a common root of fear. We are all in this! While the contagion of COVID19 may not affect each and every one of us, NONE are immune to fear. We all express it in our own unique way. Some may appear to be cool on the surface but internally they are stuffed to the point that tears will stream when they get home. Some are outwardly barking directives as a way to curb their need to feel in-control of something. Again, we repeat… there is no immunity from the humanness of fear, it exists within us all. If you aren’t already cued to respond well to stress, now is an opportunity to get there. 2) Evaluate our routines The CDC has repeatedly lectured us on good hygiene this past week. Let’s not forget it. You don’t need the lesson re-run about hand-washing and sanitizing door knobs, but we do want to take this opportunity to add in what self-care looks like. Maybe not AS IMPORTANT, but still of value is consideration of how we take care of ourselves. For many of us women, we used nail and hair salons for way more than a cut n’ color. These were our social places to unwind and destress, and an important part of self-care. Please don’t reply with a sarcastic moan about “1st world problems” because we aren’t talking about an elite sector privileged with high-end spa care, we are referring to whatever your routines were. Please DO COMMENT about what those were, and how they have been turned-upside-down this past week. We were not alone, browsing the racks at TJ Maxx last month, even if we only bought a pair of socks. Ladies, let’s make it clear, we do these things as an important part of our social routines and rituals. Hair, nails, gyms, malls… heck, even the soothing stroll through the grocery store spending endless minutes reading the labels of every box of tea has been stripped from our regular routines. Social science confirms that those who adapt quicker experience less stress. With our current stress load, let’s not add to it. It’s time to evaluate our routines, and make quick-adaptive changes to ensure we meet our self-care needs.
