[Ireland to England]
[written from memory and notes in January 1943]
Early in October we moved to Ballyhinder- an old British army post. We were more secluded but there was a movie in the post, an officers club, etc. I continued to room with Karl Koenig who with Cole, Wallace, Darby and Forth had been my roommates at Seaforde. By this time the 1st Bn had left for parts unknown. About October 25 I was told I was leaving on an “advance detail” under Col Burke (he joined us a month before) for England. This was a very pleasant trip. I had a jeep and driver and enjoyed it hugely- the ride thru Scotland and Northern England to our area near Northwich was never to be forgotten even tho the weather was poor. The people were glad to see us we were obviously amongst friends. Until the regt arrived I helped select bivouacs, ran into Liverpool for people, station equipment, and generally sized up the pubs. The pubs out in the country in the small towns are delightful old places but they are starving for business due to lack of road traffic. We are treated excellently in them. The beer is wonderful.
