When Carlos Marcello went to prison in 1983, his brother Joseph was the boss until 1990, when he stepped down. At that point, Carollo became the boss of the family. In May 1994, following an FBI sting dubbed "Operation Hard Crust", Carollo and 16 other persons belonging to the Marcello, Gambino, and Genovese families were arrested on charges of infiltrating the newly legalized Louisiana video poker industry, racketeering, illegal gambling, and conspiracy. In September 1995, Carollo pleaded guilty to a single count of racketeering conspiracy, with Frank and Joseph Gagliano and associates Felix Riggio III and Cade Carber. Carollo died on February 1, 2007, at Northshore Regional Medical Center, Slidell, Louisiana, of natural causes. Clyde Smaldone was a businessman, and he quickly learned the monetary return on his investment by purchasing the good booze straight from Canada and bringing it back here to Colorado for resale. In 1897, the Bottled-In-Bond Act was passed as a type of consumer protection legislation to help ensure that the whiskey people were drinking met certain standards. Those were as follows: the whiskey must be the product of one distillation season, it must be distilled by one distiller at one distillery, it must be at least four years old, and it must be stored and aged in government bonded warehouses. The whiskey must also be at least 100 proof, and nothing except water may be added. When Clyde was a teenager him and his friends would steel the liquor from local warehouses, then he started buying from Al Capone himself, and when his brothers got old enough they all started their own family business and went straight to Canada where there were no prohibition laws and brought some of the best bonded alcohol to Denver for resale.
