Up next, the March pick for On The Page bookclub. Our theme was History, and it could be real or fictional. I suggested Dead Wake, and it was picked!

Stopped for supper. The story has definitely picked up speed, and it’s much easier to get through. I think I have 80 pages to go.

Everything about this tragedy seems to come down to timing and miscommunication. The ship was delayed and not traveling at top speed. If it had been, it would have been in a different area than the U-20. If they had provided the information that was being given to other boats about a safer passage to the Lusitania, it would have been on a different course. And a bunch of other small and trivial things by themselves leading to this great disaster.

I’ve made it to Part Two.

It amazes me that timing is what most likely doomed this ship. They were delayed in setting off. Their speeds reduced in cost saving measure, so they were not traveling as fast as the ship could go. Could these minor things be the reason it founds itself in the area it was in when it was attacked?

It reads as a thrilling mystery. Trying to figure out what moments were pivotal in determining the fate of the Lusitania. Is it the fact that they were not told to take a safer channel, even though other ships were. Did it slip their minds to warn everyone? How much does the speed of the ship matter? How much did that delay in setting off matter?

I’m done!! Another great one by Larson. It was a little slower in picking up, but I see the reason for including all the information that he did, it played out really well. It was so sad reading about sinking and having that recall from the survivors.

This was my third Erik Larson book. I own one more and hope to get the rest soon.

I’m 114 pages in and one chapter away from Part Two. I find it so interesting seeing that a person who missed being on the Titanic is now on the Lusitania or someone who survived the Titanic just canceled their passage for the Lusitania.

I think high society and even available of methods of travel were so small back then that the same people were traveling these ways because they could afford it and that’s all there was. I don’t think I would get on another cruise ship if I had survived one sinking a few years before. I also wouldn’t want to be a on a ship that the Germans warned not to sail because they would attack it.

However, I know many people and I would probably include myself would believe that that kind of thing would never happen to them.
