while it’s not like knowledge was kept from her- belos is many things but he's too busy being witch racist to be transphobic- hunter was always so overworked she genuinely didn’t have the time to figure out the words to describe how she felt. she just assumed it was normal to be uncomfortable with being called a boy and with the shortness of their uniform haircut. (she knew raine was nb but just assumed that they were just born like that like she was “born” a “boy”)

he first figures things out sometime after hollow mind, and takes some sense of comfort in the idea of being different to what he was created to be, if only in such a small way as gender. it’s proof he's his own person.

if actually given the opportunity (considering xe was basically always in uniform and now xir on the run and have more important things to worry about) xe'd absolutely be experimenting with xir presentation. xe enjoy presenting masc, fem, and neutral equally, but either way their sense of style is incredibly lame /pos
