Chapter 11: Fight for your love
chapter 10
As battle took place in what was supposed to be a peaceful ball, you find yourself fighting to keep everyone you care about alive. But what happens when all is over that one very important being is missing.
---------------------------------------------------
I want to warn you that this chapter has lots of violence and minor blood. It gets a bit dark so if you don't like that then you can skip to the last four paragraphs for the good bits.
Chaos errupted all around you as the fighting koopas ran towards the door while the others sought safety towards the back of the room. "Bowser!" Mario yelled as he pointed at him. Bowser growled low in his throat as he stepped away from you and used one of his hands to grab your shoulder and push you behind him. Koopas were lined up in front of the doors but were hesitant to attack as only a few had weapons. They weren't expecting to fight and were woefully underprepared. He huffed, smoke rising from his mouth, as he marched up to the intruders.
"You have a lot of nerve showing your face here Mario!" He bellowed as he flexed his hands, claws shining dangerously in the lighting. Mario clenched his jaw as he took a few steps foward, making the koopas have to back up slightly in fear. He looked almost deranged as pure hatred filled his eyes. "I'm-a here by order of the princess. You have-a someone who is too dangerous to let live." He then pointed towards you. "Hand them over and I'll-a leave peacefully." A cold shiver wracked your body as he turned his fiery gaze at you before looking back up at the king.
Bowser looked over his shoulder at you as you stood there numbly. For a split second you worried that he would let that man have you. But your worries were put to rest when Bowser widened his stance and clenched his fists. "You'll never have them. They're mine." If it wasn't for the immediate danger you would've been flustered at the way he worded his sentence. "Then you leave me no choice." He said and signaled the guards to start attacking the koopas. You were too frightened to build up enough anger to burst into flames so you did what you could by helping the rest escape further into the castle.
Screams of fear and rage rang out in the ball room as they fought. The sounds of spears hitting metal armor and swords swinging wildly. As you were helping a frightened koopa off their shell you heard a squeaky voice shout in surprise. You would know that voice anywhere and whipping your head around revealed Jr surrounded by three tall figures. His small fire balls were doing nothing to their armor as they advanced, sharp weapons raised. You felt many different emotions building up inside of you. Fear, for him being hurt when he should be evacuating. Anger at how they would dare to attack him. Disgust, because who would attack an unarmed child.
You gave one final push towards the koopa you were helping before you felt flames starting to lick your skin. Breathing deeply as you stomped towards them you felt the fires of fury slowly engulfing your body. Right as one went to raise their spear you intervened by grabbing the end, stopping them in their tracks. They turned around with surprise and shock on their faces as you concentrated the fire towards your hand holding the spear, melting the metal tip off. "Mama?" Jr cried out as tears fell from his eyes. "How dare you." You muttered as you ripped the spear from their hands. "How dare you attack him!" Yelling as you used the now burnt end of the spear to jab it into the gap of their armor in their neck.
The other two raised their weapons but a gust of fire was shot out from your hands, stopping them in their tracks as they fruitlessly tried to put it out. The one you stabbed gurggled, choking on their blood before slumping towards the ground. As the others screamed, unable to put out your flames, you pointed to where the others were escaping. "Go. Get out of here Jr!" You snarled as you turned to face the other soldiers that were quickly approaching. "B-but-" He started to stammer before flinching back from the heat your flames produced. "Go with the others! Get to safety!" You yelled as you raised your arm in an arc, making a wall of flames to block them to buy him more time.
He wiped the tears from his eyes before nodding at you and turning to run. You kept him in your peripheral as you spat out balls of fire. Once you were sure that he escaped and all of the subjects were gone, leaving only the soldiers, you decided that you wouldn't hold back your flames anymore. The ends of your clothes started to burn as your body was completely covered in fire. You yelled a battle cry as you charged into the fray, shooting off fire balls and short bursts of flames at the soldiers. Whenever you saw a koopa being overwhelmed you would jump in, putting a swift end to the attackers before running towards the next.
Bodies started littering the floor, most were barely alive while others weren't so lucky. Watching them attack the koopas kept your fury burning as you tackled one of the larger soldiers to the ground. They squealed as your flames started to heat up their armor, slowly burning them. Hearing the sound of a sword being drawn you quickly flipped around. One of the soldiers snuck uo on you and was about to strike. Before you could even raise your hand a massive fire ball came barreling towards them, scorching their armor as they fell over. Looking to where the fire ball came from you felt like you could sob and laugh.
Standing in front of the doors where everyone escaped was Grumpy with Jr riding on his back. You wanted to be angry that he didn't listen to you but also relieved that he brought reinforcement. Grumpy let out a hiss as he charged foward, his head and tail already aflame. Knowing that Jr would be safe with him you turned back in search of Bowser. You were only able to catch small glimpses of him during the fight but now he was nowhere to be found. With the aid of Grumpy and you the rest of the soldiers were no match. After what felt like forever of spitting flames and making fiery walls that left burned bodies in their wake, the soldiers finally gave up.
"Retreat!" One of the survivors yelled as they hastily grabbed the few injured they could and ran away. Once the last intruder left through the doors a silence fell over everyone. The first happy sob broke the silence as they started to cheer, celebrating their victory. Thankfully none of the koopas were fatally wounded though the same couldn't be said about the soldiers that were left. You panted in exhaustion as your fire dimmed until it was only a few wisps clinging to your head and tail. Quickly turning you marched over to where Jr was sitting triumphantly on Grumpy.
When he saw your angry expression he turned sheepish as he fiddled with his askewed tie. "I know you told me to go with the others but I couldn't just stand around and worry about you. I'm sorr-" You cut him off as you quickly swept him off Grumpy and into your arms. He hesitated before wrapping his arms and legs around you, clinging to you as you buried your face into his hair and fell to your knees. "That was so incredibly stupid and brave. I'm proud of you for thinking about using Grumpy to fight but please never do that again." You sniffed as tears burned your eyes. You felt Grumpy sniffing your hair as you clutched Jr to your front.
After a few tears slipped out of your eyes you released him so you could wipe them away. You tiredly chuckled as Grumpy ruffled your hair with his breath and reached up to pat him on the head. Once Jr was standing he looked around with furrowed brows. "Where's dad?" That simple question made you pause and twist your head in search of him. When you realized he wasn't in the room you worriedly chewed on your lower lip. Not wanting him to worry you patted him on the shoulder as you stood. "He's probably making sure those intruders are gone from the castle grounds. I'll go get him while you check on everyone here. They'll need their brave little prince to let them know we won this battle."
That seemed to successfully distract him as he started jogging off towards the celebrating koopas. When you went to take a step towards the doors you suddenly felt lightheaded. Thankfully Grumpy slithered up next to you and offered his side as support. A growing headache was thumping behind your eyes as you held onto him for balance. You've never used that much fire before and it seems to be taking its toll on your body. "Let's go find Bowser buddy." You softly murmured to him as you moved to sit sideways on him. He snorted as he started to prowl the halls, occasionally stopping to flick his tounge out to get his scent.
You rubbed your pounding head as your body sagged tiredly against his back. Grumpy suddenly went still as his body stiffened up. Before you could check on him, he started barreling down a hallway as fast as he could. He skidded to a stop in front of a pair of open doors. You instantly recognized this as the throne room and wondered how he got so far away from the ball room. You moved your tired body to stand on your own as you cautiously approached the doorway. Peaking inside you gasped as you held a hand to your mouth. Bowser sat propped up on the stairs, clutching his stomach as deep red blood pooled beneath him.
He seemed barely conscious, his eyelids fluttering as he struggled to take deep breaths. You rushed in as fast as your body would let you as Grumpy trailed cautiously behind. "Bowser." You softly called out in a mix of shock and concern. When you were halfway across the floor you suddenly heard another pair of footsteps coming from behind. Quickly turning you came face to face with Mario. He looked a bit roughed up with small cuts and scorch marks on his clothing. "It's time to end-a this. You will pay for hurting princess Peach."
He took a fighting stance as he raised his fists. Your body screamed in pain as you slowly raised your own fists. Despite how angry you were that he hurt Bowser, you weren't able to summon anymore fire from your body. He started running at you with a shout, his hand raising, ready to hit you with all he had. The second he was a few steps away Grumpy suddenly charged in. He suddenly scooped Mario up into his mouth and started shaking his head like a dog with a toy. He started yelling as he thrashed about, trying to escape from Grumpy's jaws. You watched in surprise as your loyal companion of years was able to easily subdue him.
As Grumpy gnawed on him you shakily walked towards Bowser. You knelt on the steps next to him and placed a hand on top of the one holding his wound. He groaned as he barely opened his eyes and looked around as he hissed through his teeth. When he noticed you his eyes widened slightly. "You shouldn't be here. Mario. Trap." He grunted when he tried to sit up but stopped at the pain in his torso and leaned back against the stairs. You let out a breathless chuckle and nodded your head to where he was. "Grumpy has it covered." At your words he tilted his head just in time to witness Grumpy toss Mario up in the air before catching him in his mouth.
His mouth quirked up as he made a pleased hum. "Remind me when this is all over to give him a nice juicy steak." You nodded along as you turned your sights to his stomach. "How bad is it? I can go and get someone to help heal you. I should have some items in my cart that could help." You said worriedly as you looked him over for any more injuries. The dark colors of his suit hid how much blood he lost but even you could tell that he might have been stabbed. He raised a free hand to gently cup your cheek, pulling your gaze towards his. "I'll be fine. Believe it or not but I've had worse. But are you okay? Jr?"
You nodded as you held his hand on your face. "We're both fine. Jr was the one who ran to get Grumpy and helped with chasing off those intruders. All of the koopas are alive and the rest were able to escape." He slowly nodded his head as his thumb suddenly started to rub your cheek. Despite your exhaustion you could feel your face growing warm at his gentle touch. "I'm glad you're okay. I was so worried about you." The tender moment was ruined by Mario shouting at Grumpy to let him go.
You sighed as you grabbed his hand and lowered it. "Rest. I'll deal with him and then find a healer for you." You made sure he wouldn't move in your absence before rising. You sharply whistled to get Grumpy's attention as you walked back to the center of the room. "Drop." You commanded as you pointed at the floor in front of you. Knowing how you rarely used that tone he complied and spat him out at your feet. He walked behind to curl around your back, poised to attack again. Mario panted as he wiped the drool from his face, his body now littered in tiny bloody bite marks from Grumpy's chewing.
Your tailed flicked as you leaned forward. "Listen here Mario. Your princess is a liar. She lied about my village just so she could wipe out my entire species even though we were peaceful. Yes, I got angry when I learned that it was her that murdered everyone I knew and loved but I didn't lay a finger on her. She was told to leave after Bowser found out what she did. And now you come here with a small army, attack innocent people, and try to kill not only me but also him." You pointed a thumb at Bowser before stepping closer, making him scramble back. His eyes wide as he was told the truth.
"But now, you're going to leave. Run back to that murdering princess and tell her what happened. And if any of you try to come back then Grumpy here will enjoy having a new pile of bones to chew on while I will leave you as nothing more than a pile of ash." As you threatened him you took small steps closer, making him scoot back until he was able to get his feet under him. "I-I. I didn't- She." He trailed off as his eyes flittered back and forth in thought. He then whispered so quietly that you almost didn't hear him. "We won't come back. Ever." And with that he turned and ran away, a slight limp in his steps. Once you was sure he left you turned back towards Bowser.
He managed to fully sit up and had used his bow tie to cover his wound. Calling Grumpy with a click of your tongue you walked to him. "Let's get you out of here." You softly said as you beckoned Grumpy closer. With quite a bit of effort you were able to get Bowser standing. Letting him lean heavily against Grumpy as you stood on his other side to help guid him. You slowly walked with him back towards the ball room, stopping occasionally when he nearly lost his footing. The silence was broken by his tired chuckle. "Today was terrible. I had big plans for tonight only for it to be ruined."
You quirked up the corner of your mouth as you linked arms with him. "At least we're still alive. And that Mario guy won't ever return." He hummed in response as he shifted his arm to wrap his large warm hand in yours. That caught your attention as you looked up at him. Despite the blood loss his face was flushed as he slowed to a stop. "There was something I wanted to tell you back there. Before all this happened. It's kinda the whole reason I threw this ball for ya." Butterflies erupted in your stomach as you turned to face him fully. He said you name so gently, like it was sacred text that's never been uttered aloud. "I, uh. I wanted to tell you... You're so cool and- And I really."
As he stammered you were able to slowly connect the dots of what he wanted to say. With a gentle smile you reached a hand up to cup the side of his muzzle, stopping him in his tracks. Standing on the tips of your toes you stretched your body up to place a small delicate kiss on his mouth. His face errupted in a pink blush as he stared at you shell shocked. His mouth opened and closed several times, lost for words. You let out a short laugh as you tilted your head forward to rest it on his chest, being mindful of his wound. "I really like you too Bowser." You felt his hand squeeze yours as his head lowered to rest his mouth on your hairline.
"I wanted to say it first." He murmured with an amused huff. You both stood like that for a while, holding each other with flustered faces as you finally confessed your feelings. It wasn't until you hear hurried footsteps that you finally pulled away. Looking over you saw Kamek being followed by a small group of koopas. He had this knowing smile on his face as he looked both of you over. "It's about time my king. Now, let's get you healed up so you can go back to holding your beloved." Bowser groaned as he let you go so he could lean on Grumpy. When you took his hand in yours he looked down and gave you a small smile. Even after the disaster of the ball you were still able to find something good to come out of it.
