If I remember right, you had a fic idea with KJ being a single mom and Nick being the handyman that was helping fix her houseâŚ
FYI-if Nickâs anything like me, heâs cursing old houses for measurements never lining up. LOL!
I did yeah. I think of her fondly from time to time.... and lmao yeah. But he doesn't mind all that much. It's for Kent and he'd do anything for her! Including fighting with a spirit level that never lays flat and straight.

I kind of feel like kent would have wanted to do kits room herself (maybe this was before Nick and what inspired her to ask for help?) because she wanted it to be totally perfect for her and like felt like a bad mom that she had to ask for help? Idk
Ohhhh that's so cute! Yeah! That's her motivator - that Kit, at least, have a room she loves so the move isn't so terrible, especially when she's not enjoying school either. But she is pushed into recognizing she can't do it all on her own. And Nick sort of makes Kit's room his own project while the other guys do the kitchen or whatever and he lets Kent help out and they spend evenings painting together and putting up wallpaper and it's just.....really easy? nice? Kent likes it?
"I wanna live in your bedroom" by David Ramirez gives me nmtt vibes. His explanation for the song and I was like oh damn, this world Thea created has me messed up. But also his "lover, will you lead me." Anyways, 10/10 for all your writings, song recs, everything, etc.
Wahhh I went and listened to these and googled and !!!
Iâm đĽšđ yeah!!! When it rains on a cold day itâs true what they say when you know you know! Wanting to be part of her room! The house! Potential! Survival! Hope! Encouragement! Partnership!
Thank you for this! Selfishly glad you are also being forced into thinking about this concept aha
i may have missed this before but what is ânmttâ? i scrolled through your tag for it and iâm already deeply invested based on vibes alone
Hi!! Glad you like the vibes!! Nmtt is the tag Iâm using for the Nick/Kent au concept Iâve had rattling around my head for a while now.
The premise: Kent, newly separated from her ex, moves (kinda hurriedly) into a house with her daughter, Kit. The house turns out to be in dire need of work and renovation and so Kent hires a local company to come and do the work for her, and lo and behold, whoâs the main guy sheâs forced into interacting with a lot? Nick, of course. (The rest of the seniors/upper class-men also make cameos as other workmen.) Kentâs convinced sheâs on a downwards slide in life: no relationship, had to pick up a waitressing gig while she looks for a job similar to the one she left, Kitâs struggling in her new school and she doesnât feel like sheâs doing enough to help her, and on top of that the literal house is falling down around her. Nick notices sheâs kind of strung out and stressed and a little lost maybe? Starts staying behind after his contracted hours to fix her cabinets or help her re-hang her curtains. Kent, eventually, invites him to stay for dinner to say thank you, after a lot of awkwardness, and things develop from there. Mostly want it to be a fic about the concept of home, starting over, accepting help, family, and building love - even if it doesnât look like what you expected.
The tagâs ânmttâ from the paper kites song ânothing more than thatâ bc I like the simple melody and the lyrics: Sweet December's coming 'round / The city's big but all I've found / You're the truest thing in this town / And I want you now

You are the walls and floors of my room
You contain my body and all of my moods
I fill you with objects that care for me too
I sink my feet into you
I'm aware of my weight and the ways that it affects you

things you said over the phone - from the nmtt verse
âHey Kent, Iâmâahâsorry maâam, no go aheadâno, youâre fineâsorry, KJâIâm at the store after work, and I wondered if you wanted me to pick up anything? I grabbed some milk and bread but you said yesterday you wanted something for Kitâs lunch and I canât remember what it was. Fruit? Was it fruit? Iâll be here another twenty, probably. Text me back. Okay, bye.â
Kent listens to the voicemail twice through. She can barely make out what Nickâs saying above the piped in grocery store music and the general raucous in the background. Anybody else would have sent a text, or a voice note at least, but Nick has a habit for calling first. It freaked Kent out at the beginning. Still does a little. But sheâs learnt Nick doesnât expect a call back, most of the time. He just hates typing. She called him lazy once, and he just laughed and agreed that maybe he was. He has all his voicemails still stored on his phone. There are a few from Kent on there now, too, now sheâs got more used to it. He likes listening to his friendsâ voices. Likes having that record. Kent understands that, at least.
She doesnât bother to call now, though, swiping over to their messages. She likes the raisins Kent texts back. The little multi pack boxes. Can you also pick up fabric softener.
Nick reads it immediately and sends her a thumbs up in return.
Kent sets her phone aside. The house is still, settling in for the evening, dusk falling soft and velvet blue outside the kitchen window. She should find her car keysâitâs about time to head over and pick Kit up from her play date at her friendâs house. Nick will probably get back when sheâs still driving them home, but he can let himself in.
She looks around at the stack of dirty dishes; the cereal bowl Kit abandoned on the side when they were running late for the school run this morning, that Kent hasnât moved yet. It annoyed her at 7am but now, bizarrely, Kent feels an illogical ache in her chestâa sense of missing her daughter. Sheâs going to see her again in an hour. But the house feels too empty without her running commentaryâthe sound of her giggles and her sneakers being kicked off in the hall. It feels empty without Nick, too. The job heâs been working recently is a town over and heâs been gone later in the evening, a longer commute home. His raincoat is draped over the back of one of the kitchen chairs. The mug he always drinks out of is upside down on the draining board, untouched.Â
She misses him too. Nickâs slotted himself in so seamlessly, with such little fanfare, that it was a jolt to suddenly not have him around so much. To get up in the morning and feel his side of the bed already bare, Nick packed off and already gone with a full thermosâher mug already set aside on the counter for when she wakes.
Kentâs slept alone for most of her life. It shouldnât be such an adjustment, and itâs not even as if they arenât going to bed together. Itâs just the mornings that are different, and the slow slide of evening drawing in without him there on the couch beside her.
She picks her keys off the side and climbs into her car, turning on the heaters to try and kick back some of the January chill. Her phone connects automatically. She could listen to the radio or the audiobook Jacob keeps saying is going to change her life.
Instead, she backs carefully out of the drive, waits until sheâs on the straight, and then presses a few more buttons.
âHey.â
Nick sounds surprised to hear from her. Kent smiles a little to herself.
âHey. Iâm just picking Kit up from her friendâs. How was work?â
âCold,â Nick laughs. âBut pretty good. The cups of coffee from the woman whose house weâre fixing up were pretty nice this morning. Sheâs got a machine, I think. Fancy.â
Nickâs driving too. She can hear the traffic whipping past, the faint tick of his turn signal, his voice distorted a little down the line. She likes thinking about both of them in different places, doing the same thing, connected like this.
âBetter than the coffee I made?â she teases.
Sure enough, Nick laughs again. âOh. I didnât say that. You had the advantage though. I was half in love with you already. Made it taste sweeter.â
âIs that right?â she replies, but she knows it is, because Nickâs told her that already, more than once. How he felt those first few weeks when Kent kept shying away like a feral kitten from every friendly conversation he attempted to get going. How it never deterred him or changed his attitude.
âMaybe you were sneaking extra sugars in there, huh?â he continues.
âMaybe.â She pauses at a junction, turning left to head towards the neighborhood Kitâs friend lives in. âDid you get the stuff at the store?â
âThink so,â he replies.
They talk a little longerâuntil Kentâs almost at the door and needs to wrap it up.
âIâll see you back home?â
âSee you both soon,â Nick confirms.
He doesnât say âI love youâ before he hangs up, and neither does Kent, but itâs there in the silence that settles over the car afterwards anyway. Kent used to think sheâd never hear it, and then she thought sheâd need to hear it all the time, just to make sure it was still true.
Itâs been something else entirely to learn to listen for those words said in other ways, and to work on returning them just the same. To pick up the phone instead of texting. To recognize the coffee cup on the counter for what it is.
To say âhomeâ and think of somewhere together.
