okay so it's been a few days since i finished listening to the Great Divide (not to overshare but i missed a few days of my meds and did NOT want to listen to it off my lexapro, so i was a little late)
the last third of the album feels like staying super late at a party with your closest friends. it feels like privately checking in with everyone in the room song by song, your lover and yourself last.
candid laughter bookending "headed north" and dunking on cybertrucks in the middle? incredible.
"we go way back" is that friend you grew up with who is way more stable but always there for you.
favorite sorta-sequel to "growing sideways" is "spoiled" for me. i think the line "i'm still angry at my parents for what their parents did to them" is so much deeper when paired with the chorus. also the storm sounds that start at 4:02 <3
i have friends who i see in "all them horses". depressed but getting by. sidequesting to keep the suicidal ideation at bay. cryptid in the sense that they are so deeply connected to and impacted by the land they grew up on.
"a few of your own" summer thunderstorm imagery FUCKS and we need more songs like this. i can literally smell the electricity in the air. noah kahan mentions the moon more than most of my lesbian friends. and i'm a lesbian.
i personally love "orbiter" bc buggy showed it to me back when it was a baby audio clip, and they call me their moon (and with all the artemis ii news and family connections to that it's even more symbolic to me). i heard someone compare this song to "no complaints" and i don't exactly agree but i see where they're coming from. love the plucky strings here too.
i can't properly express how much of a deep cut "dan" was for me. i will say that i have a special clubhouse in my heart for songs that have a thread of grief tying together cozy imagery and this is the newest member of said club.
anyway, just wanted to share some thoughts about the album because i love it. turned 23 over a month ago and "23" reminded me a lot of my dan. just can't separate those two songs.
