Heated Rivalry, no matter how insanely dramatic it sounds, is the reason I get to start my school year in four days, alive, on meds, and almost completely out as a trans and bi person.

Heated Rivalry gave me hope that things might get better in my future, that I actually have a chance at living a happy and fulfilling life, that I will not crash and fall after I’m on my own. I saw what this brilliant team of actors and writers and directors did and thought, “I can do that?”

I joined the fandom, I found Ilya’s struggle with mental health extremely validating, and in between the ups and downs, I finally was able to get a therapist and start anti depressants. I found Shane’s racial identity and struggle with being gay very similar to my own feelings and I felt so fucking seen.

The books aren’t perfect, maybe the show isn’t either, but it’s changed my life to the point of giving me at least one more year.
