Competitive elections are a key ingredient of representative democracy. But some political analysts say New Jersey's new map creates only two competitive districts, one being the Seventh, along the Delaware River in Burlington County. It's apparent this map was drawn to help incumbents win reelection, not to keep districts as compact as possible or to prevent muncipalities from being divided into more than one district. Serving incumbents ought not to be the goal of redistricting. But that's what happens when the proposed maps are being drawn by partisans looking out for their friends. A better method for redistricting would be to use the Iowa model. Iowa doesn't handle reapportionment as do other states.
