Neun tried to lift her head. Pain shot through her spine, dizziness overtook her once more. Her head sunk back into her pillow, the voices fading out as shapes began to form behind her eyes.
Her eyes opened once more, but this time she was on her feet. She looked around cautiously, taking stock of her surroundings.

The man stopped, what was left of the skin on his face curled into a sneer. “Hello, gorgeous. Expecting someone else?”
Neun took a few steps back. “Am I...am I dead? Why are you here?”
Serrat shrugged. “Sadly, no, you’re not dead, came damn close though. To think, I could have had another chance.” He chuckled slightly. “As for what I’m doing here, well dear, you tell me. This is your head afterall.”
“Yes, of course it is.” She mumbled, examining her surroundings once more. “It has to mean something, being here then.” Neun bit her lip, pacing around.
“Well, there’s loverboy of course, some part of this filthy land belongs to him, right?” Serrat took his shield off his back and leaned on it, watching her.
Neun glanced at him from the corner of her eye. “That’s not it. There’s something else...why didn’t I die?” She continued to pace back and forth.
Serrat ran his fingers back through his hair. “Oooh, good question. Why didn’t you die? Come on, use that beautiful brain of yours.”
“I could use it a lot better without your interference.” She snapped back.
“She’s coming out again, that tiny part of you that’s still Forsaken.” He laughed.
Neun bent down to pick up a rock, a bunch of mushrooms causing her to pause. She ran her fingers through the dead grass surrounding them. Standing slowly, she plucked a few of the mushrooms and looked around.
“The plague...he’s using it somehow, but not the actual disease, no.” She rolled the mushrooms around in her hands. “A part of me that’s still-” Her head turned slowly towards Serrat. “That’s it, that’s how I lived. Whatever it is, it’s already in me.”
He nodded. “Almost there.”
She looked down at the mushrooms again. A few had ruptured, a black liquid seeping out of the broken heads. Neun inhaled sharply. “They can grow in plagued soil, he’s making poison out of things that can grow in plagued soil.”
Her eyes shot open once more, staring up at wooden beams.
“She’s awake!” A voice called out. Nisher, she recognized it now.
“Don’t move her!” A woman cried back. Eva. Madame Eva. She was still in Darkshire.
Neun tried to speak, her voice barely a whisper. “Evan. Where is he?”
