actually i don't have a theory, i have no idea. i'm bad at theorizing, i'm better at disproving them. ;)
but this is plausible, and would explain why he stretched so much more than everyone else? i highly doubt it though, why would it keep up the charade even when faced with certain destruction at the northwest party? i'm sure there are multiple other reasons, that was a number of episodes ago.
and i don't believe the shapeshifter died, it was just frozen again in whatever was holding it captive before. we don't really know the extent of its powers, would premonition be one of them? if so, why could it only see up to that part of dipper's timeline? was dipper perhaps supposed to "die" there, and pacifica to give in to her father's demands? is this an alternate universe to the one we've seen in canon that the portal could lead to?
or is this all bs and it was just a clever call-back? idk man. this show definitely sneaks in tiny hints that could easily be written off. i would LOVE to be proven wrong on everything i'm thinking. but i still want everyone to be aware of hypothetical but plausible explanations for what seem to be clues.
Parasites!
Let's start with Ribeiroia.
This parasite is a kind of flatworm. It starts out in snails who've eaten infected feces, eating their reproductive tissue and effectively castrating them. In their next stage, they leave this host and go infect a fish or a tadpole. In these tadpoles, they cyst in the leg buds, which often causes malformations, things like leaving the frog with a stump leg or with extra legs. Scientists still aren't sure what happens here, though a recent experiment revealed that malformed frogs have excess retinoic acid, which is crucial in limb bud growth. In fish they cyst in the head, body, and gills. The final stage for these parasites is when the frog or fish is eaten by a bird or mammal.
