chapter 3: his worst nightmare
sigh, school once again. this time you were running laps, having to touch the floor every time you passed the white line while the teacher tallied how many times you touched the line. you were also racing bakugou as you promised last thursday. you ended up four tally marks behind bakugou, 26-30. the coach finally blew the whistle, and he told you guys to sit down. once you sat on the bench, you grabbed your water bottle out of your bag just to realize… you didn’t fill up your water bottle.
bakugou watched you as you looked at your empty bottle flipped upside down, hoping for even a small drop of water to leak out, yet none did. he walked up to you, and as usual, he handed you the water bottle. you grabbed the water and squirted the water into your mouth.
“see i brung my water bottle… just forgot to fill it up,” you laughed, but also wanted to slap yourself for forgetting.
“not surprised, you would be the type to forget something so idiotic,” he joked, his tone laced with sarcasm.
“whatever,” you giggled, handing his water bottle back to him.
the coach yelled out, bringing you and bakugou’s attention. “i hope you guys are ready, because you have some more training to do after your lectures. your homeroom teacher will explain more to you. just make sure you bring your water bottle. especially you y/n!” the coach pointed at you, making your face steam from embarrassment.
“okay coach…” you shouted, embarrassment still flowing through your body.
once the bell rang, you two changed into your school uniforms and got ready for class. you went to mr. aizawa's class and sat down in your assigned seat. half-way into the lecture, bakugou was called to the principal's office for whatever reason. you watched him leave the classroom, then continued to write your notes down. later on, near the end of class bakugou came back a second before the bell rang.
he cursed silently to himself when he realized he missed half of the lecture and didn’t get to write enough notes. he huffed in annoyance, obviously pissed. he turned around and shoved his hands in his pockets while you quickly packed up so you could catch up with him.
“hey, why’d you go to the office?” you asked, trying to put your book bag strap over your shoulder.
he looked over at you for a second, a little annoyed about the question but still answered you, “i don’t even know. the old bastard just called me to his office out of the blue, lecturing me on my behavior in front of citizens, as if I give a damn.” he swore, gritting his teeth.
“well, i wrote down some notes for you, i can send you them if you want me to.” you turned over to look at his grumpy, but cute face.
he was hesitant about accepting the notes. he didn’t like the thought of someone else helping him out with his work. maybe when it came to you, he thought differently. “sure i guess.” he uttered, his usual grumpy tone fading a little. he soon looked over at you again for a moment before continuing “thanks, nerd.” he said in a softer tone this time.
“you’re welcome, what’s your phone number?” you asked, pulling out your phone and opening the contact app.
“just hand me the phone,” he took the phone out of your hand as he entered his number, then gave it back to you, shoving his hands back into his pants.
“okay, i’ll text you.” you cleared your throat, trying to hide your smirk. you saw yaoyorozu and mina up ahead. “i’m gonna go with mina and yaoyorozu, but i’ll text you.” you announced, about to part ways.
he nodded silently, his expression now turning into his usual grumpy, annoyed look. he watched you walk away for a few seconds before he too turned the corner.
“omg!! guys!!” you ran up to them both. “bakugou just gave me his number!!” you screamed, jumping up and down, their faces lighting up.
both yaoyorozu and mina squealed in excitement as you told them the news. they both started jumping up and down with you.
“no way! did he really??” yaoyorozu asked, as she stopped jumping.
“oh my gosh, that’s so exciting!!” mina held onto your shoulders as you still jumped up and down.
“yess i know, i’m so excited! but i’m not gonna let him distract me because we all have a training exam coming up,” you reminded yourself, looking down at the now saved contact of bakugou on your phone.
“ohh, right, i forgot all about that,” mina oh'd herself.
yaoyorozu nodded her head, “yeah, but i’m sure it’ll be fun!”
“it’ll probably be like some intense training though knowing mr. aizawa.”
“that’s true, but it can’t be that bad, can it?” yaoyorozu questioned.
“anything with mr. aizawa is pure torture,” you laughed, mina and yaoyorozu laughed with you. “anyways, you guys wanna come with me so we can upgrade our gear with hatsume later?” you asked.
they nodded almost immediately, “of course! i love hatsume’s stuff, her support items always work like a charm!” yaoyorozu gushed, agreeing to go with you.
“yeah! it’s gonna be so fun to see what she cooks up for us!” mina smiled.
“okayy, i’m gonna head to my room first. i'll see you guys in a little. byee!” you waved at them. they waved back at you as you walked to heights alliance.
when you got to your dorm room, you placed your bag on the floor and sat down on your bed. you then remembered that you had bakugou’s number and went ahead to text him.
bakugou
you: hello is this bakugou?
he checked his phone as he heard it ring. he looked over at his phone to see what he assumed was your number at the sender. he felt a small flutter of excitement, though he tried to ignore it and keep his cool. a small smirk played across his lips as he typed a quick response.
bakugou: yeah, it’s me.
you: okayy just making sure
you: [1 attachment sent]
you: here’s the notes from today
bakugou: thanks.
bakugou: wow
you: what?
bakugou: these notes are surprisingly well written.
you: well thank you 😊
you: oh and do you know what time the training exam is?
bakugou: 5:00.
bakugou: you must be afraid you’re gonna get your ass beat, hm?
you: well now that you mentioned it kinda
you: but i have to go meet with hatsume to fix my suit so i’ll text you later bye!
‘bakugou liked your text message’
you turned off your phone, then went to hatsume to upgrade your hero suit. mina and yaoyorozu finished early, so you told them they could leave you behind. you were with hatsume for around 15 minutes, and you upgraded your suit just the way you liked it. once you finished, you walked out her room seeing bakugou talking to someone across the hallway... a girl, e/n.
he was leaning on the wall near the gym, he waited for the event to start in his gear. he was scrolling through his phone, looking bored out of his mind until he heard an unfamiliar voice approaching him. a soft voice cut through the air, drawing his attention away from his phone. he looked up and saw e/n standing in front of him, leaning close to him with a flirty smile on her face.
“hey there, you're cute,” she flirted, her voice dripping with sweetness as she gave him a seductive wink.
you continued to watch what was unfolding in front of you, but it was hard since you weren’t able to hear them talk. you couldn’t see bakugou’s facial expression either, all you saw was the girl giving bakugou a kiss on the cheek. you stood in complete shock, and ran away before he could see you. bakugou himself was completely taken by surprise as e/n kissed his cheek, making his eyes widen in shock.
“GET THE HELL OFF ME BASTARD!” he yelled, as he shot an explosion at her, making her fall on the floor.
before he could even process what had just happened, he heard the sound of footsteps rushing away. his eyes darted towards the direction of the sound, and he caught a glimpse of you running away. his expression turned into one of realization and a tinge of panic. he ran over the girl and ran after you, calling out your name.
you ignored him calling your name, you ran off before he could find you. once you lost him, you slowed down your pace and started walking to find yaoyorozu and mina. when you found them, they saw the embarrassment and shame plastered on your face. mina and yaoyorozu looked at you, confused on the long face.
“i was dumb to think he really liked me,” you sniffled, a warm tear rolling down your cheek. both of their hearts swelled for you, them seeing you in such a hurt and vulnerable state was very rare for them.
“aww my poor baby, what happened?” mina asked, giving you a warm and embracing hug.
“i saw e/n kissing him on the cheek…” you weaped in a dreading tone.
“i’m so sorry for you, he didn’t deserve you anyways,” mina comforted you.
“yeah don’t even worry about him, he was just a distraction to your achievements.” yaoyorozu added as she also hugged you.
you wiped your tears, trying to stay confident. “yeah guys, you're right, thank you.” you hugged them back.
“girl that’s literally what friends are for,” mina smiled, putting her arm around you as you guys started walking towards the gym.
once you guys made it to the gym, the training exam was about to start. present mic used his quirk to announce the instructions. you, mina, and yaoyorozu looked around the gym seeing everyone’s expression. excitement, fear, maybe even both. as you scanned the room, even through the big crowd in the gym, you managed to spot bakugou from a mile away.
he stood away from the crowd, which made him easy to spot. he noticed you as well, you two both making eye contact from across the gym. he could tell you were distraught and embarrassed due to what happened earlier.
the horns blared, and the event had now started. everyone was placed in groups, having to fight fake robotic villains. you were in a group with mineta, mina, and bakugou, and everyone started to get sorted into their groups. bakugou wasn’t exactly thrilled about the fact he was paired with mineta and mina. his eyes then glanced over at you again, noticing your slightly saddened expression which annoyed him for reasons he couldn’t explain.
you guys were taken outside into the real city, they closed some parts of the city for the training exam. once present mic announced that the exam started. a bunch of robots appeared within seconds. you easily took down most of the robots, mainly the smaller ones because bakugou took over all the giant robots. you were able to see how many points your group had with a special bracelet hatsume made. you guys had the most points overall, thanks to bakugou.
once you realized you started slacking on personal points, you decided to go check the alleyways to find any robots. meanwhile, bakugou was doing his best to get as many points as possible to beat all might's school record. he went on a rampage as he took out robots left to right, his mind focused on winning and his team getting first place. he quickly noticed that your score was quite low compared to his, which only annoyed him further, and he mentally cursed you for slacking off. he didn’t bother saying anything about it though, letting you go off to find more robots to defeat.
you started running, passing every alleyway as quickly as you could. finding robots in alleyways would double your points, and it was good since most villains are known to be in alleyways to bring the experience to reality. the exam also had fake bystanders who pretended to be hurt. you could earn points from saving their lives. with every alleyway you walked through you said your line to make sure you didn’t miss anyone.
“is anybody there?” you asked.
after hearing no reply, you turned around to check the next alleyway. you noticed a bit of purple fog forming under your feet, yet didn’t seem to understand till the second you were about to walk off, a blade was thrown at you, cutting the side of your cheek. you quickly held your cheek, letting out a strangled scream, you turned around to see a villain, covered in swords and blades. “oh my gosh” you thought to yourself.
it was a real villain in the exam arena. you didn’t have any time to call for help or back up, since the villain was already charging at you, using their blades to move them like a spider. you quickly jumped over all the blades and slid onto the floor. your quirk only worked if you could locate the person’s body, but since they were covered in blades, it was much harder.
you used your quirk to disassemble the swords, making him defenseless, or so you thought. the idea immediately backfired as his swords regenerated, but he was weaker. more swords were thrown at you, dodging each one and using your quirk to levitate all the blades and send it right back to the villain. your nose started to bleed from the overuse of your power, the swords you threw back at the villain sliced each blade he used to stand on, but once again he regenerated his blades.
the villain seemed to be getting impatient as they charged at you once again, this time sneaking a sword into your calf. you yelled out in pain as the blade broke in half, leaving a shard stuck inside your leg to cause you to fall. the sword he struck at you showed a part of the villain’s torso, making you able to see their body. you quickly used your arms to levitate the monster, giving you coordination. you started breaking his hands and legs, then dropping the villain cold on the floor leaving him unconscious, possibly dead.
using your quirk, you pryed the blade out of your calf, screaming in unbearable pain since the sword was very deep in your leg. tears streamed down your face. once you got the sword out, you used your arms to drag yourself out of the alleyway. your nose was gushing with blood, your cheek left with a deep scar, and your leg cut so deep you could see your bone.
you leaned against the wall to help stand up so someone—anyone could notice you. but you could only spot the spiky-haired blonde. you watched him destroy the last robot. he was exhilarated and filled with adrenaline, but that feeling quickly faded as he heard a yelp coming from an alleyway behind him. he immediately recognized your voice and his head whipped to the direction of it.
his heart raced when he saw you stumbling out of the alleyway with a bleeding cheek, a bloody nose, and a shiny piece of a sword still buried in your leg. you wanted to walk towards him, or at least try to get a little closer to him. but when you took another step off the wall, you lost your balance, nearly falling on the ground until a pair of strong hands caught you. and that’s the last thing you felt before you blacked out.
he yelled your name as he ran to the gym, seeing mr. aizawa, all might, present mic, and mt. lady. they all saw him carrying you in his arms. he quickly explained that there was a villain in the alleyway, near the pink blossom trees. all might and mt. lady ran to the location bakugou told them while mr. aizawa followed behind them.
mr aizawa instructed bakugou to take you to recovery girl first, and without a doubt, he took you there. he had to wait outside the room while she worked her magic on you. his heart was banging against his chest with worry and uncertainty as he anxiously waited for any news from inside. it felt like hours passed by, but it was only a couple of minutes. when the door fully opened, he practically jumped to his feet as he saw recovery girl walk out.
“she’s going to be just fine sweetie, she should be waking up soon,” recovery girl reassured, giving him a sweet ol’ smile as she walked out, allowing bakugou to enter the room.
he silently sat next to the bed, his crimson eyes watching over your unconscious body. not long later, you opened your eyes and were greeted to the sight of bakugou looking down at the floor and his gauntlets on the ground next to his chair. you were happy to see him, but didn’t forget about what happened before all of this. you pushed yourself up shakily, finding some strength to talk.
“w-what are you doing here?” you asked, staring at him.
his gaze immediately flew up to meet your half-opened eyes. he lets out a soft sigh of relief at the sight of you finally waking up.
“what do you think i’m doing here, idiot? you passed out after that dumbass villain attack,” he replied with his usual grumpy tone.
“i’m fine, you should go be with e/n anyways,” you grumbled, annoyed, but still grateful he came to check on you.
his eyes widened for a split second at your words, taken aback by the fact you said that. he cursed himself for being careless enough to not talk to you about it sooner, not wanting you to get the wrong idea.
“so that’s what your attitude was about. you really think i would let some random ass girl kiss me?” he questioned with mild annoyance in his voice as he looked down at you.
hearing his tone caused you to rethink your reaction from earlier. “so...what happened then?”
he ran a hand through his spiky blonde hair, feeling frustrated by your stubbornness. he let out a sigh before explaining what happened.
“she just came up to me while i was waiting for the exam to start and suddenly tried to kiss me. i pushed her away as soon as i realized what was happening, but i’m guessing you already saw that.” he inferred, looking at you with a slight glare to assuming the worst about him.
it didn’t take a battle for you to believe him, since knowing him, he wouldn’t lie about that. “mmk, i guess i believe you,” you said playfully, trying to lighten the mood.
he grunted at your response, narrowing his eyes at you with mild annoyance, but the slightest hint of relief. “damn right you should,” he mumbled, crossing his arms over his chest. “i’m just glad you're okay. you should’ve said something before you went off alone, that villain nearly fucked you up.”
“like i knew there was going to be a villain there,” you rolled your eyes.
“damn idiot, didn’t you see the robots and fake villains all over the place? why would you think that no one was going to pull something like this? and why the hell would you try to fight him alone? you were going to seriously get yourself killed.” he explained, holding onto your shoulders making you look at him.
you cracked a smile at him for being so protective of you and caring about you. “okay, i’m sorry for scaring you, i’ll make sure i’m not too reckless next time, i promise.” you apologized sincerely.
his expression softened a bit at your apology. “whatever, nerd,” he grumbled half seriously.

some time later, you were let free and had a cast on your leg. everyone was in the common area talking about their experiences during the training exam, until the topic was asked about what happened to your leg.
“oh, i got attacked in the alleyway, and it was so scary since he was like a full-blown sword man. i managed to defeat him, but i lost so much blood, i passed out. oh— and he launched one of his blades super deep in my leg. but other than that i’m great.”
the group of students all gasped and muttered in shock, all turning their gaze to you in concern and amazement after hearing what you had experienced.
“oh my gosh! you’re seriously okay? you fought a real villain on your own? that’s insane!” jirou exclaimed, her eyes wide in shock as she looked at you.
“yeah man, that sounds dangerous. i’m glad you're okay though,” kirishima added, flashing a smile at you.
“thank you, i’ll be okay. i just hope i passed with enough points,” you sighed.
mineta chuckled in disbelief and muttered something no one could quite hear, probably some perverted comment. kaminari shook his head in amazement, a look of dubiety on his face.
“you seriously fought a villain alone? and you’re worried about points? you’re insane,” tokoyami added.
sero also looked at you with wide eyes and let out an amazed whistle. “you really have some guts, i gotta admit that.”
˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗
it was now night time. you took your pills recovery girl gave you, and was also excused from going to school until you got your crutches. since you could do whatever you wanted to, you decided to go downstairs for a little bit and watch tv to let time pass till you were tired. you limped your way to the elevator, wincing at the pain for every step you took.
once you stepped out the elevator, you saw your favorite spiky-haired blonde already sitting on the couch, his arm outstretched over the top of the backrest. when you limped your way to the couch you sat down next to him. his face was frowned while he was watching tv, it was a long and stressful day for him since all he could think about was you. he was annoyed that he couldn’t focus on his own stuff without you crossing his mind.
“are you okay? you seem pretty stressed?” you asked, putting your leg on the couch and keeping your injured leg on the floor.
“yeah i’m fine, just frustrated by stupid shit,” he responded in his usual gruff tone, his eyes darting to your injured leg.
he noticed you were sitting uncomfortably, so he moved your leg up to his lap. he claimed it was to keep your blood flowing correctly, knowing he just wanted you on him in some way. you two sat in silence for a little bit, not knowing what to say to keep the conversation going. but bakugou didn’t seem to wanna talk, he just enjoyed your presence as his facial features slowly relaxed.
“y’know, i've always wondered something about you, but don’t get mad when i ask.” you looked at him, then back at the tv.
“don’t get mad? why the hell would i get mad at a simple question? just spit it out already.” he rolled his eyes.
“why do you always want people to call you bakugou? why don’t you want them to call you kats—”
“don’t call me that,” he replied in a gruff tone, his voice barely above a growl.
the question was a sensitive one for him, and he had good reasons behind it on why he didn’t want people calling him by his first name. it reminded him of his childhood a lot, back when he was only six years old.
“sorry,” you apologized. you were about to slide your leg off his lap, yet he stopped you, keeping your leg right where he wanted them.
“it’s just childish, i don’t want people calling me that. i’m way above that dumb ass name anyway,” he said arrogantly, a hint of vulnerability in his tone too.
“i understand that. it reminds me when people used to call me n/n, it made me feel so young and weak,” you scrunched your face in disgust.
he grunted in understanding, his expression softening a bit. “yeah, somethin’ like that.” he said, feeling awkward, not really comfortable or used to talking about his feelings.
“who only calls you by your first name?” you asked, trying to get him to talk more about his feelings.
he grumbled for a moment, thinking about your question. he really didn’t want to answer it, but he knew that you were stubborn enough to keep asking until he answered. he begrudgingly mouthed a few words in a low tone, just barely audible enough for you to hear.
“my parents. they’re the only ones that ever called me that, and that bastard deku. that’s just because we’ve known each other for so long,” he mumbled.
without notice, he continued rambling on about his life, surprisingly talking more than usual and opening up about a few things he had never told anyone before. once he started he couldn’t stop, but you continued to listen to him. it was strange how comfortable he was with you at that moment, letting down his walls just a slight bit and letting himself be more vulnerable. as he spoke, he couldn’t help but glance down at you every once in a while.
you added some comments every few words he said, nodding every once in a while to show you were still interested in what he was sharing, even sharing a couple laughs together. you being around him encouraged him to talk even more.
and since you were typically an antsy person, you ended up moving your position on the couch quite a few times. you now ended up on his chest with your legs resting on the arm of the couch. you were half asleep while he was talking, just replying with “mhm,” at this point. when he looked down at you, his expression softened as he saw you slowly drifting to sleep, your head falling onto his chest. he paused for a moment with a half-smirk, watching as you leaned on him.
he could’ve easily pushed you off, like he did when anyone else tried to touch him. but for some reason he didn't. instead, he continued talking, enjoying the comfort of your presence and, surprisingly, not minding your sudden clinginess.
“oh, shoot,” you said, trying to get up but your tiredness was weighing you down. “i have to take my medicine recovery girl gave me.”
he noticed you were struggling to get up, and he could only sigh. “you idiot, you're practically falling asleep. just sit still and stay there, i’ll get it for you.” he said, getting up from the couch.
“no, it’s okay, i was heading to my room anyways,” you reassured him, giving him a small smile while you used the arm of the couch to lift yourself up.
he couldn’t help but roll his eyes at your stubbornness. “whatever, but you're not gonna heal properly putting pressure on your foot. just get on my back.”
you looked at bakugou, smirking as he signaled for you to get on his back. you wrapped your arms around his neck and pushed yourself up a little. he wrapped his strong arms around your legs and easily walked you to the elevator. his heart was fluttering by your half-lidded eyes, and the way you clung onto him. once you made it to your dorm, he laid you down on the bed and placed your injured leg on a pillow.
“where’s the medicine?” he asked, looking over your vanity trying to find it.
“it’s in the drawer on the left side.” you grabbed your water bottle from the night stand, getting ready to take your medicine.
after quickly rummaging through the drawers for a moment, he finally found the medicine recovery girl gave you. he grabbed the bottle and walked over to you on the bed. you opened the bottle, and took two of the small white pills. once you placed them in your mouth, you drunk some water and swallowed the pills.
“thanks bakugou.” you said softly and sweetly.
“yeah whatever, just get some sleep,” he said in his usual blunt tone, clearly trying to hide his concern with a constant grouchy attitude.
he opened your door, then closed it as he walked to his dorm room. he sighed, flopping down onto his bed and staring at the ceiling. his thoughts were all over the place, and he couldn’t stop thinking about you. he didn’t understand it. why did he feel so comfortable when you were there? why was your presence so damn addicting to him? he groaned in frustration, putting a hand over his face, confused by his never ending thought of you drowning his mind every day.
