Silly Friends Make Silly Friends
Milo would freely admit that sometimes, his new friend was just a little inscrutable.Â
Example: How he found her when he was dropping off the candy heâd gotten from a school fundraiser on her behalf.
He knocked, and was called in, and the state of her living room was baffling the man.Â
Currently, Anya was sitting in her small living room, with her yamask resting just behind her on the back of the sofa, her Froslass was floating right by her side on the sofa, and her Hatterene was hilariously taking up a huge part of her couch next to her.Â
âWhat in the - Anya?âÂ
âHm?â She didnât give him a glace, as she was in the middle of eating something.
â.... Can I ask what the hell you're doing?âÂ
Anya looked up from her food, giving him a bewildered expression.Â
â.... Dinner?âÂ
â... This is how you have dinner? With all of your pokemon just⊠around you?â He questioned
â.. Not usually? But the rain outside was makinâ me nervous - the power tends tâgo outâ
Milo could not, for the life of him, understand the logic there. But Anya was always a little enigmatic, really. They hadnât known each other long, but she was good at confounding him with her logic leaps, if nothing else.Â
âDo you usually let them out of their pokeballs when they get home, though?âÂ
âYes?â
Huh. Something about that was interesting to Milo, though he didnât linger on itÂ
âWell, Iâm just here dropping off the sweets you asked forâÂ
âYah?â Drew perked up at the mention of sugar.
âOh, thank ye! Ye can put it on the counterâÂ
âGot it. Uh, see you tomorrow?â He questionedÂ
âSure!â She waved to him, with her pokemon following suit.
Milo shut the door behind him, and his brow was furrowed as furrowed could be as he stood there in a small apartment buildingâs hallway. Anya could be quite the character sometimes, and while he had been bewildered, the more he thought about it, the less ridiculous it was. Seemed he was just caught off guard. She did love her pokemon, even if it seemed a little unconventional.
Anya reminded him of another person with a love of Galarian Punk and pink. Perhaps he should introduce them.Â
Oh, that was a great idea! Both of them could use more friends!Â
Heâd look into it tomorrow. He was sure it was a good idea.Â
-
Huh.
âSo.. You two⊠know each other?â Milo questioned, genuinely surprised.
Anya glanced over at him âHm?âÂ
âHell yeah we fuckinâ do! Graduated secondary together!â Piers announced, arm around Anyaâs shoulders. âBeen friends fâr years! Surprised we hadnât mentioned it to ya before now, but oh well!âÂ
The fact that he was touching her without asking and she was clearly fine with it was the answer in and of itself, but Piers' response clarified a lot. Milo couldnât help but smile bemusedly at the situation
âHuh. Didnât know you knew each otherâŠ. Is she the best friend you kept talking about?â Milo questioned almost playfully.Â
âYou bet!â Piers gave Milo a tired grin. Anya looked down with a red face.Â
Milo chuckled, shaking his head. âWell, letâs not delay! We have a rented Karaoke room to abuse!â He waved for them to follow him into the venue theyâd gotten the reservation in in the south end of Hammerlocke.Â
âOh, hell yeah! Ready, Anya??âÂ
Anya recovered from the bashfulness rather quickly at the promise of karaoke as Piers removed his arm from around her shoulders, and she gave a solid nod âAye! Leâsâgo!âÂ
âI push and you tend to shove I-âÂ
âGive in and you wonât give up IâmâÂ
âNot getting out of here this time!âÂ
âI bought a Lemon to a knife fight!!âÂ
Oh, now Milo just felt left out.Â
They could both sing?
Brother, Dearest, Pay Attention
âNGGHHHAAAAAHHHHHHâÂ
âStop yellinâ. Ah lowered mah hearinâ aid and I can hear you despite iâ!âÂ
âShut up!âÂ
Anya heard that soft, almost sarcastic click of Denton turning off his hearing aid, and grumbled from her place on the couch as she stewed in her negative feelings.Â
They were moving. Again.Â
Anya really was starting to get sick of it.Â
She heard a small click again after a few minutes of stewing, dreading whatever nonsense was coming next.
âI donâknow why yâre so upset. It's not like this is the first time. Mom and Dad move. It's just what Dadâs job has tâdo.â He reasoned
âOh, you donâ get a say - youâre in college! In a dorm! Same place!â Anya huffed, not moving from the couch
âYah!â Drew agreed
âYeah but I also moved around with Mom anâ Dad too. Yâr the one who didnâ wanna go on a journey or do the leagueâÂ
âUgh, you donâ get it. You have friends now, so maybe shut up and let me mope!âÂ
Denton paused at that, thinking a little - while also blatantly avoiding the intense stare-down he was getting from his sister's pokemon.Â
Drew was rather protective of his trainerâs feelings - which was probably a good thing? Denton supposed it depended on who you asked.Â
But as he thought about it more, he remembered how angry he used to get when they moved - before he went off on his own time to take on the gyms.Â
He huffed - he was visiting for summer holiday and here he was, annoyed at her anger like she was still a whiny 5 year old. She was 16, not a baby by any stretch -Â
And⊠unlike him at that age, she knew exactly what she wanted to do - who she wanted to be - by the time she was 7, and only solidified her desire in her teens. Acquiring her own team in spite of never going on a journey, she had something she wanted to do, and partners to do it with.Â
That desired career needed an education in a way that his didnât - he was able to take a high school equivalency test, and then go right into college for the teaching degree that he wanted. She needed an actual school diploma, with an actual GPA and real final test scores - apparently working in restoration was prestigious enough to warrant that level of education.Â
And that was being made a lot harder with all the moving - she often had to keep track of her grades and make sure her records were in order by herself - mom and dad had a bad case of âDidnât get itâ about how serious she was taking this career goal.
The more Denton thought about it, the worse he felt. UghâŠ. Being a big brother is so frustrating sometimes. So did having empathy, but that wasnât a factor here.Â
After a moment, he called out â... Hey AnyaâÂ
âTurn off your aids. I don wanna hear you, anâ you donâ wanna hear meâ she grumbled out, not even getting up to look back at him
â.... Is thaâ you tellinâ me tâshut up but different?âÂ
She just grumbled at him again - no verbal words that he could hear. He adjusted his hearing aid on more time
âJus- JusâlistenâŠâ He attempted to start. He wished she was looking at him so he could sign, but it was clear she wasnât up for it â... Iâm sorry fâr beinâ dismissive, I know itâs hardâÂ
Anyaâs head popped up from the couch almost instantly, an expression of disbelief marring her scowl. Denton had to suppress a laugh at the reation âWhaâ, feel bad fâr makinâ me upset?âÂ
âYesâÂ
âHuh⊠Thanks thenâÂ
Drew gave Denton an approving nod at the apology, before seeming to motion for him to keep talkingâŠ? The young man wondered what the pokemon was attempting to suggest, but Drew seemed to be pointing to Anyaâs pokeballs, which were set up on a little pillow on a dresser by the door to the apartment. The idea clicked.Â
âUhmâŠ. you wannaâŠ. go battle? At the park?â âWhat?âÂ
âDo you wanna battle?â he repeated âHavenât been out all day anâ Gengar could use a battle. He likes battling with Frankie, yâknowâÂ
â.. He does?âÂ
âAyeâÂ
Anya looked skeptical at that reassurance, but sighed, getting into a proper sitting position on the couch before getting up, stretching as she did so âYou know what, sure? I need to get outta this damn place anywayâÂ
âI thought you liked this apartment?âÂ
Her scowl became a bit more sincere for a moment. âDonât test my patience. Ah donâ have anyâÂ
Denton sighed, then sighed when she looked at him. âNoted. Letâs goâ
You did It, (Old) Friend
Anya could not believe what she was seeing.Â
But there he was. Leon. From last Summer. Her âSummer Best Friendâ from back in Postwick.Â
The Galarian Champion. Just like he said he would be.Â
â... Mum!! Mum come look! Look at the TV!!!âÂ
âWhat?âÂ
âMum, look who the champion is! Come in here!âÂ
âYamah!â Drew agreed with the urgency, looking absolutely bewildered in his own, funny way.Â
When her mother popped her head in, she stared at the screen and gasped âWell Iâll be!â She exclaimed âIts the boy you befriended in Postwick! Wow, wouldya look at thaââÂ
âYeahâŠâ Anya trailed off, seeing Leon holding the championship trophy with his big, doofy grin on his face, his guardians and little brother in the background, the toddler grinning and laughing excitedly.Â
Though Anyaâs mother had returned to whatever sheâd been doing, Anya sat on the couch of their rental apartment in Wyndon, and stared at the TelevisionÂ
â.. I wish he had a phoneâ Anya lamented âI wanna congratulate him. He did it!â She partially lamented to her Yamask. âAnd I wanna introduce him to Irene. Do you think heâd like âer?âÂ
âYamah!â Drew nodded affirmatively.Â
Anya contemplated it âBut⊠he did it. Before me!!!â Anya suddenly jumped up âDo ya know what that means, Drew?âÂ
âYah?âÂ
âThat means I gotta work even harder!!! He may be the youngest Galarian champ, but Ahâll be the youngest restârationist! Iâll work on the Book Ah The Wolves before ya know it!âÂ
Amused at her sheer enthusiasm, Drew gave an enthusiastic âYah!â in response, and Anya cheered in repetition right after.Â
âThat way, when we meet again, I can tell âim that we both made it!âÂ
Drew nodded in agreement with the statement, seeing the enthusiasm for her passion - and perhaps just a hint of honest competitiveness burn in her eyes.Â
The old pokemon had no doubt sheâd accomplish that dream - though âhow soonâ was debatable.Â
But he wasnât about to snuff out such promising ambition
-
âLeon?âÂ
âHm?âÂ
Hop poked his head into the kitchen of his brotherâs apartment âDid you used to know someone named Anya? You did, right?âÂ
Leon paused, the microwave going off as he let himself think âAh, yes! Yes, I did, way back when you were a baby! Anya Ambermightâ he laughed âHard to forget a girl with a Yamask. Why?âÂ
âI was reading the Newsletter for International Battle Club, and her name came upâ Hop held up the little magazine, open to a single-page article âits from the Nimbasa Battle Boss NewsletterâÂ
âNimbasa? As in Unova?â Leon turned around, after opening the microwave, holding out his handÂ
âYeah, lookâ Hop handed it over.Â
âNIMBASA CITY WELCOMES NEWEST MASTER LIBRARIAN AND BATTLE BOSSâ he reads aloud âGalarian Native Anya Ambermight Takes Over As the First Immigrant to Run A Battle Challenge in Nimbasa City - Weâll Iâll be damned!!â Leon suddenly grinned, as if giddyÂ
âHuh?âÂ
Leon quickly read the short article, and spotted a particular phrase
âHead preservationistâÂ
âAha! She did it! She really did it!âÂ
âWhat are you talking about?âÂ
âShe works with books!âÂ
Hop gave a confused look âYeahâŠ?âÂ
âNo that's - that's what she wanted to do! She wanted to restore books when we were kids - and she is!âÂ
âOooh⊠thatâs cool!â Hop commented âHer teams interesting thoughâÂ
Leon looked at the color photo just above the article, showing a now grown-up Anya with her team
â... She has two yamasks nowâ he canât stop himself from laughing âwith a Frosslass⊠and a Hatterene? Good for her. Hatterene are notoriously hard to train!âÂ
âDid you read it? Apparently her challenge is really hard. I kinda wanna go and tryâ Hop grinned
âHah! Perhaps one day we will! Iâve never been to Unova!âÂ
The conversation died off after that, and Leon couldnât stop smiling.Â
To think, just one summer together, sharing adventures and dreams, and there they were as adults - accomplishing those dreams.Â
He really did need to get himself to Unova sometime.Â
Thoughtful Holiday Memories
Sheâd nearly cracked her head open on the ice rink railing - saved only by Emmetâs quick thinking and Danielâs startled âYah!â. Emmet felt like he lost a year off the end of his life as he, quite slowly - moved Anya back into an upright position.Â
âTHIS WAS A VERY BAD IDEA!!!â He practically shouted, looking understandably a touch distressed in the face.Â
â.... yes. Extremelyâ Anya agreed, her tone stiffÂ
âWe are leaving the ice rinkâ Emmet announced âYou tried! But it is time to get outâ
âYes pleaseâ Anya nodded, eyes already at the exit.Â
âHoly shit!âÂ
Elesa got their attention as she slid over to the two of them. Just as she approached, Anya stepped onto the carpeted outer rink.Â
âYou nearly had a hell of a fall, you okay?â Elesa asked as Anya immediately moved to take off the ice skates, her scowl prominent.Â
âNo. I want to sitâ The woman stated flatly.Â
âSo we are going to join Ingo!â Emmet added, also looking a little weathered by the brief few seconds of near-harm.Â
Elesa sighed, what a right mess this turned into!
Elesa had just wanted to go to the winter fair, and perhaps do some ice skating. She could have never guessed that literally none of her friends had any balance.Â
Only her beautiful and perfect girlfriend could also skate. Oh well.Â
âSkyla, let's go around one more time before we end their sufferingâ Elesa reached out a hand.Â
Skyla laughed âI told you this would happen, babeâÂ
âI know, I know- sue me for wanting my friends to try something new!âÂ
âMaybe I willâÂ
Anya watched as the two skated away, and sighed deeply. Ingo waved to get her attention.Â
âHow are you?âÂ
â... A tad discombobulated, but fineâ she reassured.Â
Ingo huffed âNext time, we are just going to the winter village for the food and shopsâÂ
âAgreedâÂ
âYah-Mah!!â Drew practically shouted, looking appropriately miffed at the near-accident that occurred on the iceÂ
âOh, calm yârselfâ Anya rolled her eyes. Ingo looked up at the Yamask - Daniel was holding at Anyaâs arm in the meanwhile - having a different reaction to her near-hit to the head.Â
âAh, while we are here, actuallyâ Ingo motioned to his shoulder bag, reaching for something âAs we will not be seeing you for the holiday, I thought I should give you your gift nowâÂ
The surprise in his friends eyes was evident âWhat? Gift?âÂ
âYes. For the festival of Justice, it's customary to exchange giftsâ He explained âAs to give appreciation to your friends and family - it's an odd thing, I think it was taken from a Kalosian holiday, actuallyâ he pointed out âbut it is apt. You are my friend, and I wish to gift you with something.âÂ
âAh⊠I⊠I donâ have a gift in return!âÂ
âNext time there is a Galarian gift-giving holiday, you can return the favorâ Ingo simply reasoned, holding out a small box âPlease, take itâÂ
Despite her odd nerves, Anya took the box, which wasnât wrapped, and opened it.Â
Inside of the box was a woven bracelet, made with a soft, comfortable cotton material.Â
âIt is for your watch. It should be the right widthâÂ
It was the right width. Just a few weeks prior, her cloth (she hated the feeling of leather on her bare skin) wristband that held her wristwatch broke, and she had been waiting on a sale for a company that she liked to buy a new one. It seemed her friend was a step ahead.Â
âI know that you were waiting for the sale, but they were almost out of stock of the pink oneâ Ingo responded âSo, I purchased it to give to you for the festivalâÂ
Anya took the wristband out of its box, feeling the cloth between her fingers - soft and gentle on the skin, with the insert for the watch face that makes sure that the metal doesnât touch the skin. These were not cheap - it's why she was waiting for the sale.Â
But he bought it for her, in the pink gradient that sheâd wanted.Â
âI âŠâ She looked back up at him, her emotions starting to get a little out of hand already - ah, emotional disregulation: but good this time! âThank⊠thank ya, Ingo. I ⊠âÂ
âItâs okayâ he reassured âTake a breathâÂ
She took a moment to collect herself â.. Thank ye, Ingo.âÂ
âYou are very welcome, Anya.â He gave her a happy nod.Â
âOh yay! She likes it!âÂ
Emmet approached them - having gone to grab coffee âHappy Kalde-mas!âÂ
Anya let out a laugh at the slightly ridiculous colloquial name, and gratefully took the coffee, her lopsided smile a full-on grin.
âHappe kaldeâmasâÂ

A Friend In Need?
Most other teenagers were straight up afraid of Piers, and he liked it that way.Â
No typical high school drama bullshit and no distractions from his music. He had his friends. He didnât really need anymore. Anya had been a welcomed surprise, frankly.Â
But no one was scared of Anya, despite her stature (She was the tallest girl in the school, but not that tall, all things considered). She was quiet, wore multiple shades of pink and orange, and even on the most humid of days was in a long sleeved shirt or sweater. Her head was always in books, she did her school-work program at the library, and of all the pokemon to have as a partner, she had a damned Yamask.Â
Half a semester into the school year, Piers had taken to keeping an eye on his new friend. He saw those familiar stares - as in, he knew what people were thinking. He just hoped that no one would be stupid enough.Â
But halfway through another long evening at the library filling out endless paperwork, Piers heard the startling sound of books falling onto the carpeted floor.Â
â... oopsâÂ
Piers stood up, a sinking feeling gathering in his chest.Â
â... Iâs alrightâ A slightly sheepish voice reacted. Anya. Her tone gave away that she knew it wasnât really an accident.Â
Piers started walking towards the conversation, slowly, quietly.Â
âYouâre in the AP English class, right? Anna?âÂ
âAnyaâÂ
âOkay EmmaâÂ
Well, that was a predictable dig
âIâs Anya. Iâs pronounced-âÂ
âI know how itâs pronounced, mumble-mouthâÂ
â... if aâm mumblin, whyâre ya understandinâ everythinâ I say but mah name?âÂ
Oh, sassy. Nice.Â
âYouâre the one with the accent here. Talk like you have a brain and Iâll think about saying your name correctlyâÂ
âAh sure hope yânever go northâa Wyndon with thaâ attitudeâ Anya responded. Piers cautiously watched a row away, looking between some books âAccording to you, thereâs a whole lotta âno brainsâ up there. Yâainât even got the Spikemuth accent, anâ yâr tryinâ tâtell me that iâm brain-dead jusâ cause I donât sound like you? Thaâs not fair tâanyone!â
Piers wondered how she could sound so sincere saying something that anyone else might have said with sarcasm. Hell, she did sound offended - but did she not know that she was deliberately being mocked?
On the bright side, it seemed to take the bully - a piss-poor battler Piers recognized from the after school battle group - completely off guard, as Anya adjusted the books in her handÂ
âIf yâll âscuse me. I have these pulled fâr a book pickup cominâ up soon.âÂ
And she abruptly pivoted and left the blubbering buffoon standing there.Â
Piers decided he needed to assist - if only in the aftermath, and turned the cornerÂ
âYouâve got some fukinâ nerve, Herbert ShrewâÂ
âWah - wuh - Cadell??âÂ
âYâ know sheâs my friend, right?âÂ
âWhat - well - I mean-âÂ
In what he knew was a rather pompous show, Piers put his hands in his pockets and walked up to the other teenager, leaning forward right into the manâs spaceÂ
âYou talk to her like that again, anâ Iâll make sure you canât sit right for a week, got it, ya belland?âÂ
âG-Got it!! Crystal!â And the coward rushed out the back door of the library
âRight fuckin wankerâ Piers grumbled.Â
âMahsk?âÂ
Piers looked up, seeing that Drew - Anyaâs Yamask - was floating a few feet awayÂ
âUh, hey, Anya back at the desk?âÂ
The yamask nodded, giving him an interesting lookÂ
âWhat?âÂ
Drew motioned over towards the desk. Piers furrowed his brow.
Did he⊠want him to check on her? Piers supposed that made sense.Â
âIs she not doinâ great after that?â Piers asked the pokemon.Â
Drewâs expression was telling.Â
âHm, alright, come on. Does she like coffee?âÂ
-
Anya had never gone to the principalâs office before.Â
But then again, sheâd never had to wrestle someone to the ground before - she was stronger than she looked, dang-nabit. She hated even touching people most of the time, but anger and determination can cloud that shit real quick.Â
Piers was sat on her left, looking a little exhausted, black eye partially hidden by his makeup.Â
The fight had been sudden, and hilariously unprovoked. At least, that's what Anya had assumed before Piers had admitted to threatening them.Â
âTheyâd been talkinâ about wrecking the library to make your life harder anâ I told âem Iâd get mâfriends and I to wreck them if they did thatâÂ
Anya was a bit too emotionally detached to speak, but signed a simple '... Why?'Â
âIt seems they didnât like that you were beatinâ âem at wrestlinââÂ
Anyaâs scowl deepened, but she didnât communicate further.Â
â... They were wailing on meâ Piers stated âWhyâd you barge in?âÂ
Anya looked at him, and signed quite succinctlyÂ
âFriendâÂ
Piers took in that simple sign, and the seeming weight it held coming from a person he knew didnât have many friends, period.Â
â... Can I have your hand?âÂ
His palm was up, an offer as casual as he could manage it given his emotions.
She stared at the hand for a while, eyes not staying focused on any one thing, but falling back on the hand again.Â
Her hand grabbed his, and the two of them sat in silence, ready for the scolding theyâd be getting from the principal.Â
At least they were doing it together.Â
Meet'n'Hike!
Elesa - contrary to popular belief - did not hate the outdoors.Â
She didnât even dislike it! She loved a good, sunny day and a hike out in the woods!
She just⊠was more of a city girl, thatâs all.Â
Which is why she didnât turn down Emmet and Ingoâs offer to go out on a lovely little hike with their new friend, Anya.Â
Theyâd met a few weeks prior at Elesaâs birthday at the request of the twins. Apparently she was new to the city - the new Battle Boss at the Library.Â
She seemed⊠nice?Â
Sheâd been the one to recommend karaoke apparently - something Elesa had never done with the twins before - apparently they quite enjoyed it! That was a cool thing to learn. Sheâd only done karaoke with Skyla, and admittedly wasnât all that great at it. But that didnât mean it wasnât fun!Â
And so, Elesa had gone, and had met their new friend.Â
She was.. Awkward, in a single word.
Reminded her a lot of when sheâd first met Ingo in elementary school.Â
Her smile was a little lopsided, but seemed genuine, though when Elesa offered a hand to shake, she didnât take it
âPlease ask before touching, Elesa,â Ingo had informed.Â
âAh!â Elesa jumped a bit âSorry! Can I shake your hand?âÂ
âAye, thank yeâ Anya nodded âNice tâmeetâya. Twinâs told me lotâs about yaâÂ
âGood things?âÂ
âI assure yaâÂ
Elesa grinned âExcellent! Let's get to singing then!âÂ
While Anya had been awkward around her, on the mic she was anything but. Neither was Ingo! The two got together and did a rather pitch-perfect cover of âI need a heroâ and Elesa was starting to feel like the odd one out. And then Emmet sang, and Elesa realized that all of her friends could sing but her.Â
Oh well, time to embarrass them!!!!
Elesa jammed out to one of her favorite pop songs, and her friends didnât seem to give much of a shit about her lack of pitch. It had been fun, overall, even if she didnât really get to speak with Anya all that much.Â
There was always next time, and this was next time!Â
Now if only she could actually get to the trail head.Â
Left turn hereâŠ. Up the wayâŠÂ
âYama!âÂ
Elesa turned her head, greeted by a yamask - but not a unovan one?Â
âOh! Hello there, youâre unfamiliarâ Elesa commented âStone⊠galarian?âÂ
âDrew! Drew, where the âell did you go??âÂ
âHuh, Anya?âÂ
Anya crested a hill to Elesaâs leftÂ
âOh! Uh, hello thereâÂ
Anya was in cargo pants and what looked like a long-sleeved workout shirt with a pink puffer vest. It was an ⊠interesting look. But it was also almost 83 degreesÂ
âHey! Is this one yours? Ingo said you have two!âÂ
âAh, yes. Daniel is catchinâ up. He didnâ sleep lasâ night and heâs crankyâÂ
Elesa thought that over âIsnât he a ghost type?âÂ
Anya shrugged âHeâs always liked to sleep. Ah donâ question itâÂ
Huh. New fact.Â
âWell, are you with Ingo and Emmet?âÂ
âNo. Theyâre noâ with ya?âÂ
Elesa shook her head âlemme check my phoneâ She took out the device, âOh, Emmet texted meâÂ
âHm?âÂ
Elesa read aloud âSorry! Ingo and I were called in for an emergency meeting. We texted Anya too, please go on without usâ She looked to Anya, who was now checking her Xtrans
â... Ah, so âe didâÂ
âHuh⊠well uh, do you still wanna hike? I mean, Iâm game for itâÂ
Anya contemplated it, though her pokemon seemed to have made the decision for her, the galarian one grabbing her arm and pulling her towards the trail headÂ
âYah! Yaama!!âÂ
âGah!âÂ
Elesa snorted âI think he wants to go?âÂ
âDrew, fâr the love of all!âÂ
âYahma!â Daniel grabbed at her other arm, and Elesa couldnât old back a laughÂ
âAre they always like this??âÂ
âAh wish they werenât but yesâ Anya huffed âOkay, weâll go! Jus lemme go ya clingy bastards!âÂ
The pokemon - satisfied - let go and went back to happily floated about.Â
Elesa managed to stop laughing âOkay, well, can I let out my Emolga? Sheâs friendly, and wonât leave my shoulder, promise!â Elesa made sure to add that last part, recalling a warning from IngoÂ
âOh uh, sure. Drew anâ Daniel donâ bite. They canâtâ She glares at Daniel specifically âSo weâve learnedâÂ
Oh⊠there was a story there.Â
âUh, they canât?âÂ
â... Itâs a long storyâÂ
âI mean, if weâre gonna hike, we have the timeâ She offered
Anya seemed to contemplate it â... Okay, but donât blame me if ya donât believe me!â She gave Elesa a slightly crooked smile, and Elesa smiled back.Â
This was going to be an interesting story, Elesa couldnât wait to hear. After all, she wanted to know if what Emmet said was true: was Anya a good storyteller?Â
Only one way to find out!Â
A Special Challenger Appears
âMaster Anya!â Called a voice from the vestibule
Anya sighed, hands full of two rather delicate archive boxes âAye, Patrick?â
âYou have visitors!â He announced
â... Visitors, âr challengers?â Anya requested a little specification as she put one bin away with Drewâs assistance.Â
âUh.. I think one of them is a challenger? The other one is just visiting, she saidâÂ
â... Who are they?â Anya questioned as she started putting away the next bin.Â
âShe said not to tell youâŠ.?â Patrick admitted âIt's a surprise, she said.â
Anyaâs brow furrowed - confusion evident in her and her Yamaskâs face. She shut the archive locker, waiting for the secure click and beep.Â
â... I will be up soonâ The librarian nodded.Â
âIâll let them know!â Patrick called back before she heard his dress shoes âclackâ up the stairs. Drewâs head tilted curiously
âYahma?âÂ
âLetâs see, Drewâ The woman sighed âLetâs hope it's not Elesa with December again. I donât need âer tryinâ me again so soon
Anya and her pokemon made their way back up the stairs and into the library, towards the front circulation desk, seeing a familiar oversized sweater contrasted against dark skin, joined by a pale boy with a pikachu on his shoulder. Â
âHi Miss Anya!â Iris greeted, keeping her voice low for the sake of the echoey library foyer
Pleasantly surprised, Anya waved back, with her Yamasks floating forward to greet the teenager and her friend âAh, Hello, IrisâÂ
The young champion grinned at the librarian pleasantly - her friend next to her giving Anya an interested stare before he was distracted by Drew and Daniel
âMy friend here wanted to take your challenge!â The girl sounded very enthusiastic, bouncing a bit before motioning over to the boy âThis is my friend, Ash! Heâs from Kanto!âÂ
âHiya!â Ash waved, voice surprisingly boisterous.
âSh!!!â a gaggle of people hissed at him from the nearby children's library area
The teenager tensed at the wordless scolding- the library was clearly not a place he frequented with that volume of voice.Â
âSorryâ he shrugged nervously - several decibels lower, and getting an amused chuckled out of his friend.Â
âAye, iâs fine.â Anya reassured with a raised hand âNice tâmeet ya, Ash. Iâm Anya Ambermight, and these are mâyamasks, Drew ânâ DanielâÂ
âYah!âÂ
âYah!âÂ
The teenage boy stared wide-eyed at the Yamasks with sheer wonder âOh wow! Two different Yamasks! A Glarian one to boot!âÂ
Iris began scolding him before anyone could even shush him âAsh, stop yelling!âÂ
âYahmah?âÂ
âMas-Mask!âÂ
Anya chuckled with a shake of her head. âSo, ye wanted tâtake mâchallenge?â Anya asked, getting everyoneâs attention once more.Â
Ash collected himself a bit, before lowering his tone again to respond âI mean, yeah! Iris told me about it - and I canât believe Iâve never heard of it before! Sounds like a real challenge, and my pokemon and I love a good challenge, right Pikachu?âÂ
The pokemon on his shoulder nodded excitedly.
âYeah! And when I told him I havenât beaten you yet, he really wanted to give it a tryâ Iris chuckled âRight?â Â
âHaha, guilty is charged. Kinda wanna beat her to itâ Ash grinned. Â
âPika!âÂ
The librarian waved them over as she turned around âFollow me, thenâÂ
Anya led the friends to the back of the library, where the arena was, with the study hall on one side, a reading area on the other, and the two circulation desks hard at work.Â
Anya turned around once they were in the center of the arena, hand on her hip âSo⊠Did Iris tell ya âbout the rules?âÂ
Ash shrugged honestly âKinda!âÂ
Anya sighed, not seeing Irisâs excited grin âAlright. Lemme give ya the rules, then.âÂ
Anya made a sign to one of the librarians behind the left circulation desk who nodded, and flipped two switches behind said desk. One of them turned on the disc, which made a soft whirring sound before going quiet again, and flashing green. The other seemed to activate some kind of protective shield around the area - which seemed to startle Ash and his Pikachu.Â
âUp above us is âthe discâ, iâs a noise sensor.â she slightly raised her voice as she continued to speak âIf it getâs too loudâ The discâs green ring turned yellow in a circular flash âit changes color.â She lowered her voice again âIf it gets târed, the person who made thâsound automatically loses- even if ye managed tâbeat mâpokemon.âÂ
Ash nodded in understanding. âHow many pokemon?âÂ
âTwo on two, one at a timeâ Anya explained âIf ye can beat me anâ my two pokemon witâout settinâ off the alarm, yâwin the challengeâÂ
Ash grinned âAl-rightie! I think I got it! I can totally do that!âÂ
Anya rose a brow in amusement at his enthusiasm. âWeâll have tâsee - go to the right side, Iâll be on the left.âÂ
Iris seemed just as hyped as her friend, grinning widely and rushing over to the rear circulation desks - that Ash was realizing also worked as the officiator of the battles that happened back here. She walked through the weird shield that had gone up - how did that work? - and waved at him.Â
Anya and Ash stood on opposite sides of the arena, and Anya tossed out a pokeball with no fanfare, her hatterne bouncing out, surprisingly quiet, and glancing back at Anya, who gave her a singular nod.Â
Ash contemplated who he could use against a hatterene, and threw out his Lucario, whose steely personality seemed perfect for the challenge.Â
Ash stage-whispered to get the pokemonâs attention âLucario!âÂ
âRoh?âÂ
âThis is a quiet challenge! You gotta be quiet! Listen for me!â Ash instructed the pokemon, giving a hilariously playful wink.Â
Iris giggled quietly at his determination. Just âbeing quietâ was what she tried her first time too. This was gonna be a funny battle, if nothing else.Â
Anya looked over to one of the librarians, standing in the officiant space, and making a motion with their hands in quick succession to a dramatic point
Ash tilted his head âHuh? Was that sign? Has the -âÂ
With a rather aggressive diagonal motion - with one hand curled into a sign Ash didnât understand, the hatterene quickly lunged forward, startling both Ash and Lucario.Â
The minute Irene lunged, Iris hit the âstartâ button on her Xtransâ timer.Â
The battle lasted only 25 seconds, and all because Ash yelled âDodge!â the second time Lucaro was getting attacked
The red light bathed the arena in a harsh flash, and Irene looked unimpressed at the quick completion of the fight. A perfect imitation of her trainerâs expression - which was a bit softer.Â
â... Damnâ was all Ash said as he recalled Lucario before the pokemon could also look at him with a disappointed stare
Anya returned Irene to her pokeball similarly, giving Ash a nod, which seemed to be enough to get his attention âWell then. You had a go at it, but unfortunately, ye didnât succeedâ The vaguely sparkly barrier seemed to dissipate. âYe can try again another time, if ya likeâÂ
âHah, wow, that was fastâ Iris teased, returning to Ashâs side and punching his shoulder playfully âMaybe you need to do âsilent trainingâ with Lucario and try again!â
Ash huffed, that determined glint in his eyes returning almost immediately âMaybe Lucario and I should!â He announced - once again too loud-Â
âSHHHHâÂ
Anya had already left the arena by the time Ash recovered.
