the thing that really gets me about the corn field scene with nillhall is the moment heather says “i’d rather fucking die”
before then it’s all flirting and smiles on ray’s end. it’s clear how much he’s enjoying this moment with her while she’s fighting her attraction towards him, but as soon as she says that ray shuts down and starts to leave. all of a sudden it’s not fun anymore, not when the girl he so clearly likes has just said she’d rather die than be with him. and heather doesn’t get it, she’s surprised when he starts walking away because she wasn’t actually serious
and then he throws that line back in her face at the player’s ball. it hurt him, and he sees that he’s had an effect on her so he needs to know the truth, needs her to admit that she lied, that she cares
and heather doesn’t double down on what she said, so flustered she just says “fuck you” which i honestly think gives ray hope and is maybe what drives him to check on her later (after disgustingly making eye contact with her while making out with the random girl)
and omg the two of them at dodge’s car!! the fact that heather had told him she wanted him to be real earlier and then he is!! what he reveals is heartbreaking, but it does give great insight into his character
his little monologue afterwards though, i have to admit i can’t help but laugh when he says “rich girls smell like plastic,” it’s so ridiculous
but then!! “you turned into a bird that night. i don't know what you are. it doesn't matter that you're pretty. i don't care… i saw you fly.” SWOON
