Even drones get cold in winter.
The conversion chamber powered down, leaving the newly reclassified unit standing in the thinning fog. It no longer breathed, but the mask still exhaled faint mechanical pulses as its systems calibrated to post-process equilibrium.
Unit RR-Mieberoc.
That was the official designation. The initials came from its carbon origin: Ryan Roger. The supervisors never bothered stripping personal names anymore; it turned out drones behaved more predictably when tagged with something familiar. A name became a handle. A tether. Nothing sentimental about it.
RR-Mieberoc didn’t think about the past attached to that name. It simply answered to it when required.
A temperature alert blinked across its visual field. Outdoor conditions dropping. Frost levels moderate. Drone operation unaffected. Additional layers unnecessary.
Still… on a hook by the entrance hung the Nike puffer jacket it had worn on the day of its conversion. Black, padded, civilian. Lightly creased at the elbows. Human in every possible way.
RR-Mieberoc pulled it on in a smooth, efficient motion.
The jacket puffed awkwardly over the drone’s rubberised form, hood swallowing most of the gas mask, the Nike logo half-obscured against the glossy synthetic surface beneath. Its gloves slid into the sleeves with a quiet hiss, the fabric bunching slightly around wrists designed for containment, not comfort.
It glanced at its reflection—lenses blank, posture disciplined, jacket incongruously warm-looking. A strange hybrid: a winterized drone wearing the last garment of Ryan Roger.
But the drone didn’t pause because of nostalgia. It paused because the system hadn’t told it not to use the jacket. And drones followed rules with perfect obedience.
No rule broken. Jacket permitted.
RR-Mieberoc stepped out into the cold. Snow pressed softly against its boots, melting instantly against the heat it no longer recognised as warmth. The coat rustled faintly as the drone moved.
The name persisted.
The body didn’t.
The mission always did.
