ahhhhh thank you!!!! ilysm!!! representation is so important and it’s one of the reasons i keep writing. it’s always so gratifying when people send me a message thanking me for writing brown characters bc they rarely experience that in art and i love that this community has become so much more inclusive since i started writing!
It definitely has! I know that you were already writing when I joined, so I know that you know how much representation was lacking back then. When I started writing Different Strokes, I made a conscious decision to write black women as my OFCs moving forward, so as of right now, Nina from ROG is the only OFC I’ve written who isn’t black (her daughter, however, is biracial).
When I used to write Jonas Brothers fanfiction, you rarely saw black OFCs. Whenever I came across them, there was usually some sort of racism plot involved and I got so damn tired of black women existing in these stories only for the family of x Jonas Brother to be racist towards her. WHY was that the only plot line people could dream up for black women? It was infuriating.
So I wrote a Joe fic where my narrator was biracial, and recounting the love story between her mother and him. Her mother was a black woman, and the only reason it was mentioned was to acknowledge that fact. Any problems that arose in the story had absolutely nothing to do with race, because that felt important to tell.
Looking back, it’s kind of crazy to think that the majority of the fic I wrote while in that fandom featured white OFCs. I didn’t even really think about how odd that was at the beginning. It was just...an accepted norm, you know? White characters were everywhere, so I wrote them without even thinking about the fact that people who looked like me were missing, at first. When I really started to think about it, though, it bothered me. I hated that I couldn’t find that representation in what I read. So since I couldn’t find it, I wrote it myself.
I’m glad I had that epiphany. People of color deserve to have their stories told. I’m glad that people like you and I are able to tell them.
