In this small park, dancing is split between couples’ and group activities.  So early in the evening people gather to stretch, mingle and warm up with their respective partners.  At 6:30 the sun is still out and many members are taking their time to do a slow dance or a paced waltz.  We returned a few hours later to see most of the park taken up but Step dancing to a much more modern beat.   Several performers were visibly sweating, and it seemed to be one of the more arduous dances that we’ve seen yet. A couple dancers said that this is one of the longest running daily dance groups in Zhenjiang.  Indeed, people are out in the Mingli park every night of the week.  The dances and groups do vary from day to day, but the locals here are some of the most committed. To them, their social lives and community revolve around the community in the park itself.  In that way, the night dances become a center of the community itself.  Although not all dance groups are very public, this is an important showcase of Night Dancing that has to be in the public eye; it relies on public interaction and support to keep its membership up each day.
