World-Building Wednesday question- How common is it for people in that world to have powers over things? What if someone doesn't have powers? What if their power is to nullify powers?
I would say that it’s fairly common for people to have powers. Somewhere between 25-30% of the population have some sort of ability. The strength of the powers does vary, though, and this 30% can range in abilities from being able to levitate stones an inch off the ground to being able to cause volcanic eruptions or stop the world turning.Someone who doesn’t have powers isn’t really at a disadvantage socially. Since they are the majority, they are the ones who set the standards. People who have abilities are more likely to require special needs, such as an ice elemental requiring heat packs in their clothes during the day to keep their body temperature and energy up. This is because more often than not, they have slightly different body structures and internal processes.Someone having the ability to nullify powers would be very rare, as most abilities are element based. If, hypothetically, it did exist, it might be some subset of a darkness or space elemental, but it would be highly unlikely for it to occur, and even more unlikely for it to be a powerful ability. Often, the more specific an ability is, the less likely it is to be extremely powerful unless it’s directly passed down from a progenitor who’s got the full extent of the abilities.
