“Hi sweetie. How are you?” her mother, Elaine, asked.

“A bit tired. I just got off from work,” she replied. “How’s dad and Ethan?”

“You know your father, still trying to finish his boat. God knows how long it’ll take. Your brother’s working hard to get into university next year. He wants to go to New York. I support him and all, but he needs to be asleep when it’s 1 in the morning! I’ve basically banned coffee in this household!” Elaine exclaimed. 

Amelia chuckled. She imagined her dad in the basement sanding the corners of his boat and her brother and mother arguing about the coffee machine. “Tell Ethan that he can stay with me when he’s here.” She scrolled some more on her Facebook homepage.

“You won’t believe what just happened,” Elaine started. “Remember Janet, your cousin, Aunt Silvia’s daughter? She just got married last week! Last Week! Isn’t she younger than you, Amy?”

“Two years younger, mom. Two years,” Amelia paused for a moment and then asked. “What are you suggesting, Mom?”

“Are you dating anyone?” Elaine asked. 

Here we go again, Amelia thought. Her mother would call her every now and then and she’d always mention someone engaged, married or having kids. Amelia had thought of dating and getting married, but she hasn’t found ‘the one’. She’s been on tinder and other dating apps, but some just wanted a one night stand and most of them she didn’t click with.

Amelia shook her head in response and answered, “Nope.”

“Are you at least seeing someone?” Her mother asked again. Amelia thought for a brief moment and, like before, shook her head. “No, mom.”

“Really? I could’ve sworn New York had a higher population rate.”

Amelia rolled her eyes at the comment. “If I did, I would’ve already told you about him and if it was seriously I would’ve told you I’d be bringing him for thanksgiving.”

“Honey, you’re beautiful. Smart. Do you need your parents to look for your ‘the one’?”

“Okay, mom. Calm down. It’s probably not my time yet. Most of the people in New York are job-oriented... Right?”

Elaine sighed, a sign of giving up for Amelia. “Alright. I don’t want to keep you up. I’ll call you tomorrow. I love you, sweetie. Sleep early okay?”

“I love you too, mom. Tell dad and Ethan I said hi,” Amelia responded.
