Significance of NIDDM/Cultural Implications
Significance of Diabetes
As of 2010, 25.8 million people in the United States have diabetes. Roughly 18.8 million have been diagnosed and 86 million have prediabetes (1-3 adults). According to the CDC, there's an estimated $116 billion spent due to direct medical costs associated with diabetes. John Hopkins Medicine have calculated that 90-95 percent of people with diabetes have NIDDM. Over 30 million prescriptions are filled in the US yearly related to diabetes (CDC, 2014).
Cultural Implications
Being overweight can lead to NIDDM. According to the CDC, roughly 34.9% of adults are obese (CDC, 2014). Lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise can be changed to minimize the threat and treat NIDDM. Commercialized fast-food allows for poor diets and increased stress due to fat intake.
Certain races could me more susceptible to insulin resistance and develop NIDDM. These include African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, American Indians and Pacific Islanders (Hopkins, 2014). For more information visit the Hopkins Medicine link below.
