So I've been a RN in a nursing home, I've been a cardiac tele RN, I've been a medical intensive care RN, and I've been a neonatal intensive care RN. The best part about nursing is you can go and try anything you want. Ultimately I'd like to become a Nurse Practitioner and I know I don't want to be a neonatal nurse practitioner so I've decided I want to go into labor and delivery nursing and work towards becoming a NP in an OBGYN office. If you could keep me in your thoughts and prayers I've got an interview next week on Thursday for a labor and delivery RN position! #nursing #RN #registerednurse #telenurse #medicalicunurse #criticalcarenurse #criticalcareRN #nicu #nicunurse #nicurn #obnurse #laboranddeliverynurse #nursepractioner #NP #setgoals #achievegoals #lovewhatyoudo
The good stuff.
Remember that very sick little one I mentioned a few weeks ago? I took care of him again recently, and I am amazed by his progress. I wasn’t even certain he was going to make it through the next 24 hours when I left his bedside the last time. This time I was able to hand him to his mother for kangaroo care, and it was the most incredible feeling. Believe it or not, mom even remembered me, which is amazing considering she was also very sick the last time I saw her. It reminded me of why I do what I do. I am constantly amazed by the tiny fighters I have the privilege to care for. They are so amazing that I can’t even put it into words.
Some patients really stick with you.
Every now and then you have that patient you just can’t stop thinking about. That one that sticks with you no matter what you do. You get off work and try to figure out who is working the next night so maybe you can get an update. Nursing isn’t the type of job where you can just leave everything at work, or at least it never has been for me. We always say “nursing is a 24 hour job” and you can only do so much during your 12 hour shift. Even when you work your ass off and you’ve done everything you possibly can for a patient, it still doesn’t feel like enough sometimes. I took care of a very sick little guy the other night and I just can’t get him off my mind. He had so many things go wrong within such a short amount of time, and I just don’t know if it’s going to be possible for his body to recover. It’s really hard when the family is so sweet and thanks you profusely for taking care of their baby. You want so bad to be able to give them good news, but you also have to be honest and realistic. A lot of people say they could never work in the NICU or peds because they would get too attached and it would be too hard. Well of course you get attached and it is really hard sometimes, but it’s so worth it. It’s the miracles we witness and the amazing families that keep us going. Life is so incredibly fragile, never take that for granted.
Night number 4 of 4
It’s night number 4 and I turned my alarms off in my sleep again. I vaguely remember thinking It was still early and I was hitting snooze. I always have to set at least 2 alarms for work. Luckily I was woken up by a wrong number phone call about an hour later than I normally get up. I’m just glad it wasn’t the charge nurse saying hey where the hell are you? I’m off for almost a week after tonight! Im just going to try not to think about all the crap I need to get done, the appointments, and events I have to go to during those nights off. I don’t know how my house gets so messy so fast when I’m basically only here to sleep.

The NICU nurse...
Hey there Tumblr. I decided to make my own blog after following tons of other nursing blogs for the past few years. I am a NICU RN on a busy unit at a large teaching hospital. I’ve been a nurse for almost 4 years and a NICU nurse for just over 1 ½. Prior to being in the NICU I worked in critical care with full grown patients. I love what I do and couldn’t be happier to take care of the tiniest humans. Once in a while I might have experiences to share, questions to ask, advice to give, things to vent about, or funny things to say. I also love a good gif as much as the next person.
Things I love #hockey and being a #nicunurse so this shirt is a total #win for me. #NHL #hockeylife #nurselife #nicurn #nicu #tattooednurse
