Bred for hunting Cobras, the Thai Ridgeback is, according to the American Kennel Club, “tough and active, with an excellent jumping ability. [They’re] highly intelligent, [have] a strong survival instinct, and [are] a loyal family dog.” Despite this, up until recently, the breed has reproduced in Thailand almost exclusively by natural selection. The domesticated population is small. The Thai Ridgeback is one of only three breeds that has a ridge of hair that runs along its back in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. Their energy level is typically medium to high, with most of the day spent lounging and activity periods occurring in sporadic bursts. They are best suited for experienced owners, and do poorly in cold environments.
