Step-by-step guide to update Nexus Player to Android 5.1 Lollipop build LMY47D via official factory images.
For years, people have seen the promise in Android gaming. When Ooya first came out, most people thought it would be a smashing success. But to date, no one has been able to make this dream a reality. With the introduction of Android TV, the Nexus Player, and especially the Razor Forge, can Android Gaming finally make the next step?
To make the next step, Android Gaming has to become transcendent. Android and Gamers have to realize a certain gap that Android Gaming has to fill. For a while, we have thought of this as “casual gaming” but I don’t think that should be the outlook. This gap should more appropriately be thought about as cross-platform gaming. Set-top boxes and mobile gaming have been around for a while, but Android is the first platform that has had the true potential to combine the two. So how well does it work? Let’s talk about that…
Android gaming on a set-top box has been a great experience. Modern Combat 4 is ridiculously fun to play. Reminds me a lot of the earlier call of duty games. Another ridiculously fun game is Sky Gamblers, shooting Germans out of the sky in about 40 different plane types, is extremely gratifying for some reason. As well the multiplayer experience on these games are both solid and help keep the games refreshing.
The issues are that when you try to take these games to a tablet, they are way less satisfying. And that seems to be a bit more of an issue to me because it negates the one advantage Android has, being able to play games on multiple platforms. To be fair not all games have these issues games like Badlands and Riptide GP 2 are just as of fun to play on the tablet as on a set top box.
Most issues boil down to games that are just more fun to play on a gamepad than on a touch screen. The gamepad that comes for the Nexus Player by Asus has got it right amazingly on the first try. The only critique I would give the gamepad is that the bumpers need to be a little more feedback, there is the kind of mushy as it stands.
Perhaps higher specced gaming tablets like the Nvidia shield tablet can help fill this gap, but that still leaves me wondering about phones and other platforms. Cross platform gaming in the cloud is the future, and Android has the head start on the competition, the question is will they be able to figure it out.
As of right now, there are a ton of games out for the set-top boxes on Android TV but most of the best titles are still missing, which is disappointing but still that should be resolved as companies like Sony transition all their TV’s to Android software.
SO what do you think, is Android gaming the way of the future or will Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo, remain dominant for the foreseeable future? Be sure to leave your thoughts in a comment below!
#NexusPlayer Nexus Player owners should know that just because it's not on the store on the console doesn't mean you can't install it. It just means you have to go through the Play Store in a Chrome browser to install it. https://plus.google.com/116188771946459707654/posts/PvCbQHEzdDp
