Boldly, you stood up, determined to follow the blond.

Gally’s drink falling to your feet, making you stumble a little, hands shooting to keep yourself steady.

"I’m fine, I’m fine"

Your hands forming fists as you watched Newt’s figure now halfway to his hut.

"This ends tonight" you whispered under your breath.

"Look, Y/N got ballsy" Gally laughed.

"You’ll finally ask him out?" Minho questioned.

You nodded stubbornly.

"Better take his shot!" Thomas shout, as the other Gladers cheered.

But you were not listening, already halfway to Newt’s hut, fist banging his door.

The boy slowly opened the door, looking at you confused.

"Y/N? Leaving the party that soon?" 

There was something remotely strange about Newt’s tone.

He sounded less kind and more sarcastic.

Was he playing the mad card?

He?

You’ve been unwillingly in love with the boy since the first time you saw him, you had every right to be mad.

"Watch your tone, Bruto"

Newt looked taken aback.

His little and soft Y/N, talking to him like that?

He backfired: "tipsy, aren’t we?"

"Still more reasonable than you."

"You came to fight?"

"No, I came to get in" you entered his hut, Newt still stunned by the door.

As he turned around, slowly closing the door he looked at you in a way you’ve never seen Newt look at you.

His eyes darker, but you could spot fire in them.

"You suddenly crazy?" The boy asked.

"Always been. What? Too busy with your hands in the mud to notice?"

"Watch your mouth brat"

"Fuck off" you answered.

If possible Newt’s eyes got darker.

"Why don’t you go back playing dumb with your boyfriend?" His head tilting to the left as he crossed his arms above his chests.

 Your eyes burning flames as you took a step forward.

"And who is my boyfriend?"

"Oh please, you guys make me wanna throw up, smiling and laughing around all day"

Another step.

"Carful, you almost sound jealous"

"Nonsense" his eyes finally moved away from yours, breaking the gaze.

He looked at the ground quickly, moving behind you.

You turned.

"Why? Is it that impossible for you to look at me that way?"

His eyes shot up, searching for yours.

You moved closer to the blond, each word echoing In the small hut.

"I’m not that silly little girl you think I am", "I got balls, more than you anyway" 

The blond scoffed, amused.

"Is that so?"

Taking one final step, only inches away from his face, you breathed out some last words.

"Try to keep that in mind Newt, I’m no one fucking little sister"

And his lips were on yours, hungrily taking what he had been craving for too long now.

As his hands travelled down to your back, yours gripped his hair stronger.

Night fell in, when Minho breathed "it was time"

Thomas smiled, "yeah it was getting too obvious".

In the distance I could spot a couple of boys making their way over to us.

"Well I must say it’s an odd view" spoke the boy to the left, the one I recognized as Minho.

"Minho boy?" I asked looking at Newt.

"What’s up with this shank knowing all our names?"

The three boys looked at me, stunned.

"Spooky" I whispered, breaking the silence.

"Alright, I’ll take her back to the pit" announced Minho taking a step forward.

"No! Just joking","Heard you shanks saying it yesterday" the new word slipping through my lips.

"She got ya" Newt laughed.

"Alright Greenie"

He didn’t look very convinced.

The third boy spoke, he was the one who first greeted me the day before, the one with dark skin and short hair: "I’m Alby, I’m in charge here." He took out an hand for me to shake, reluctantly, I took it. 

"Y/N" I replied. 

"Alright Y/N, we need you to tell us everything you know" 

"Not much then" 

I continued "I will though, but I need to hear you guys first".

Alby rolled his eyes, annoyed.

I thought he was nothing like Newt.

Then, glancing at Minho, he gestured for him to take care of it.

"Alright, come shank" 

I quickly glanced at Newt, and I found his eyes searching for mine too.

I broke the gaze, turning around and following Minho.

"It’s gonna be a lot to take in, so no interruptions and no repeating"

Two hours later, my head was filled with notions, words, explanations as I was chewing some vegetables and a piece of bread.

Every detail of what Minho had told me before, flowing in my head.

Who the hell put me in here?

I glanced around, boy’s eyes peering at my figure.

I kept on eating, annoyed.

The chair beside me moved and a boy sit on it.

"Hey, no one introduced us yet, I’m Frypan"

"Y/N" i smiled tiredly.

"Heard Minho gave you the big tour"

I nodded.

"Yeah it’s gonna be hard to swallow it all at once" 

I looked at the boy, his skin was darker than Alby,’s but his eyes were clearer.

"I saw you in the kitchen" I changed topic, "Minho told my you’re the cook" 

Frypan nodded, "yeah, I feed all this shanks" he looked around quickly, "As you see, I’m always the last one who gets to eat".

His plate was still full and I felt a urge to keep him company, so we chatted, really, about anything for more than half an hour and by the end of it, I decided I liked the dude.

"So, Newt’s hand thing?" He asked.

"No idea" i replied, looking at my hand; his name was still there, but the letters were slowly fading.

"You’ll figure it out eventually, don’t worry" I smiled really, maybe for the first time since I got here.

We were cut off by a small and chubby boy, who made his way towards our table.

"Hey Fry, you got something left for me?" He showed his empty plate to the boy, who sighed annoyed.

"No chuck, how many times do I have to tell you, portions are equal"

The little boy frowned, "thanks" he whispered, I felt sorry.

"You can have mine you know, im not that hungry anymore".

His eyes lit and he looked at me "you sure?" He asked.

"Positive" i handed him the plate.

"Newt’s gonna get mad" commented Frypan, "order is key word for the dude"

I shrugged, not really afraid at all.

"I’m Chuck, by the way"

"Y/N" 

He smiled and took the food.

"You’re very pretty Y/N" he whispered.

I instantly smiled but then a knot formed in my stomach; for the first time in two days I realized I had no idea how I looked like.

He must have sensed: "Your eyes are green and your lips are full, your hair dark, I think it’s brown though, not black" 

"Thank you" 

"What are you shanks doing here?" A boy came forward, it was Alby.

He didn’t wait for a response though.

"Greenie, Minho told me he showed you around, you satisfied now?" 

I nodded, "very much"

"Cool, meeting you in the meeting hall in 10; all keepers will be there and we’ll discuss about, your, thing" he nodded towards my hand.

He then left, walking steadily.

"Where is the meeting hall?"

"I can take you there" offered Chuck and I happily agreed.

10 minutes later, I was sitting on a chair in the middle of the dusty room; in front of me 10 boys were discussing and whispering into each other’s ears.

I recognized a few faces like Alby’s, Newt’s, Fry’s and Minho’s, but the others were strangers for me.

"Quiet please" Alby called the attention.

"I now announce this meeting started, Greenbean you may talk"

Ten pair of eyes shot in my direction.

"Y/N"

"What?"

"The name is Y/N"

"Yes sure Y/N, can you tell us what you remember?"

I took a breath, "Nothing much really, I woke up in the Box no memories or anything, as I was trying to figure out how to get out, I looked at my left hand and well, you know what’s written there"

A moment of silence. 

"You have any memories of who wrote that name? Or why?" Asked Alby.

I did actually, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to tell them, not yet.

I shook my head.

"She’s obviously lying" said a boy to my right, he had light hair and his face was lightly burned.

"Why would she Gally?" Another asked, this one had blue eyes, but they were tired.

"It’s obvious Winston, the Creators must have sent her to kill Newt, she’s a killing machine"

"I’m not!" I shouted.

"Yeah sure greenie, we’ve all seen you"

"I was scared and confused, I just thought he was the one who put me in here"

Gally scoffed.

"If i wanted you dead, you’d be" my eyes burning flames.

"Alright, let’s calm down" Newt stepped in, then continued "it’s not the first time a Greenie reacts like this Gally; you remember you shit your pants the first time, right?".

There were some laughters, than the offended boy stood up, hurt pride on his face: "just say you fancy her, it will be quicker"

Then looked at me:

"I bet she’s a whore anyway"

Gasps all around the room, then I stood up, fist tight, running for the boy.

Everybody got up, yelling something, then a pair of arms stopped me.

I kept on pushing, "Say it again! Say it again it if you dare!"

Alby gestured to take me outside and so I left yelling boys behind, my gaze never leaving Gally’s while I was pushed outside.

"Hey, Hey" a pair of brown eyes were staring at me.

Newt’s hands shot up taking my head between them, "calm down, alright?" 

My breath slowed, and my chests fell.

"How dare he" I breathed.

"You’re right, he’s an idiot, but you can’t lose your temper that fast, you’re gonna be in trouble" 

I sighed, taking his hands off me.

"Nobody can talk to me like that" 

Newt nodded, putting a hand on my shoulder, squeezing lightly.

"Forget that piece of klunk. Let’s go for a walk, shall we?"

"What about the meeting?" 

"I already made my point clear, let’s go"

He started walking, leaving the hut behind.

"You comin’?"

I nodded jogging to his side.

It was a quiet walk, kinda peaceful really, the boy led me to the track-hoes garden, where they grew up fruits and vegetables.

Flowers were all around, it was quite full of dandelions really.

He sit nearby, on a little hillock.

I sat beside, staring at the walls.

"I lied" I confessed, Newt head turned to face me.

As i looked at him, I kept on talking.

"I think I’ve written your name, no, I know I did, I feel it"

Newt nodded, thoughtful.

"Why are you telling me?"

"I don’t know I just-" I took a breath, "I don’t think this name thing has anything to do with them, I think is something more…ours"

Newt frowned.

"We can’t know, maybe you were really sent to kill me"

I stood up quickly; I confessed myself, almost, (almost) sounding silly and pathetic and that was what he thought of me?

"Bye Newt"

"Wait-" 

But it was too late, I was already leaving the boy behind, making my way anywhere but close to him.

His words somehow hurt me and the fact he didn’t believe me was worse.

I walked back to my room stumbling on my way on Chuck who asked me how things went.

"Horribly" I blurted, keeping my pace.

My eyes shot to the walls.

I wanted to get out of there, I wanted to leave that place.

I turned in their direction, but quickly changed my mind, it would have been of no use leaving now; but something kept telling me I had to do something, I had to find a way.

I sit on my bed shutting the door behind my back.

Outside my hut, boys were listening, and chuck chuckled: "are all girls like this?"

He took a step forward, his eyes staring right at me.

We drowned in a few seconds of absolute silence.

"What?" I asked, amused. 

He shook his head, chuckling.

"Nothing" he murmured, a small smile playing on his lips.

"You alright blondie?" I asked him as the boy started laughing.

"Were you just falling for me or what?" By this point I was laughing too.

"I guess I was"

"Don’t stop then" 

The air suddenly thick.

"Promise me?" I suddenly asked, my pinky finger out for him to shake.

"Promise you what?" Even tho I haven’t even said anything yet, his finger was already interviewed with mine.

"Say you’ll never let me go" 

The boy smiled, I felt him holding his finger strongly, lightly shaking.

"I won’t" 

Silence fell, even the shouts of silly boys in the back didn’t break that instant.

Or hadn’t really, until I felt two strong arms rest on my shoulders.

"What’s going on over here?" Minho asked.

"Just made with this shuckface over here a promise"

Newt laughed, finally breaking the grip on my finger.

"Well it’s all very lovely but I need you two to come help me with Gally, that klunk is particularly unbearable today. Just got the new Greenie to the ground".

Dawn came, unannounced, as I slowly opened my eyes.

It was time to breath, it was time to act.

I eventually found the strength to stand up, my body almost shaking but grief had to wait for a couple hours more. 

I made my way down the stairs, the morning breeze freezing my face, close to the Map Room I could spot a circle of Gladers, towering over something, making my way closer I spotted Newt on the ground, slowly cleaning Alby’s bloody head.

"What happened?" I asked Winston.

"Looks like Alby tried to light up the Glade yesterday, keeps saying is because he wanted to scare the Grievers away, got a massive bruise on his head too, say he had to fight one".

Alby, the same boy who told me to protect the maps was the one who tried to burn them?

He went completely crazy after all.

"Here you are" Thomas found me in the crowd, "think I figured out something, where’s Newt?" I glanced at the boy, caring about his friend, as I slowly got closer.

"Hey" I called out, he looked at me, blood on his hands.

"Gotta go".

"What? Where?"

I tilted my head towards Thomas, the blond standing up and muttering something to the med jacks.

"What is it?" Asked Newt once he reached us, his clothes dirty and his forehead stained in sweat; it had been a long night.

"I think we figured out something, me and Teresa, I think I know how to read the Maps" 

We shared a look, then Minho asked: "what are we waiting for then? A Griever to come help us?" His eyes unlikely panicked.

"You have to let Teresa out first" Thomas asked.

Newt shot me a look, me nodding at the boy.

"This damn girl".

Fifteen minutes later we were sit around the small maintenance room of the Homestead, papers in hands as Thomas explained his idea.

"I think, if we get every pattern of every day together, something might stand out, a letter maybe or a number, words, anything."

After a first attempt we got a letter.

Tried again and got a different one.

"Can’t be a coincidence" teresa stated and I nodded, eyes locking with Minho’s and Newt’s.

If it comes down to choosing to trust the guy or not, trust him.

They didn’t need to be reminded though as they nodded energetically, hands shooting for more papers.

"We gotta run the Maze" spoke Minho.

"You crazy?" Asked Thomas.

"No he’s right" Newt barged in, "what if today’s pattern changes? What if it leads to a different word?"

Thomas doubts cleared in a second and he stood up, Minho following.

"We’ll come back as soon as possible" they muttered, leaving the room.

"Let’s keep going" breathed Newt, as we kept taking papers, moving them, writing down letters, cutting edges.

After a full hour, I felt newt’s breath on my neck.

"You alright?" 

I nodded, not leaving the papers’ sight.

"I know Gally-" 

"No" 

He sighed, "I’m worried about you, you haven’t spoken a word all day" 

"I’m fine" I cut short.

I needed to figure out the pattern, not relieve my emotions.

Newt breathed again, standing up.

"We can’t do this all on our own, I’ll find someone we can trust" with that he left the room, glancing my way.

There was silence for a minute, then for the first time in a few hours I felt Teresa’s voice speak up.

"He really cares about you", I looked her in the eyes, but didn’t feel like answering.

The girl didn’t stop though, "I think you’re special, just like me and Thomas, aren’t you?"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about" I breathed, hand reaching for a paper.

But you can hear can’t you?

My temples burning. 

"Stop it" I breathed, hands holding my head.

"I knew you could do it too" 

"Do what?" I asked, more exhausted than interested.

"Talk…telepathically" 

I snorted.

"Thomas told me he did it with someone other than me" she breathed, her tone more curious than hostile.

"Why?" I found the strength to mutter, too devastated to even process the new information.

"I guess we’re different" she shrugged, hands clasping maps, as her hair fell in front of her face.

"Why didn’t you tell them? That you can talk to Thomas that way?" I asked.

"We can talk to Thomas that way" she corrected, than looked around "it’s not time yet" 

"What?" I tried to ask but was cut short as Newt entered the room, four boys behind him, Fry closing the row as he sit close to me, eyes taking in the view.

"Looks like we’re a long way from that dinner aren’t we?" 

I lightly smiled, sorrow already playing with my heart.

Hours went by, it was by noon as Newt finally decided we had to prepare for the night, his now leaders’ duty couldn’t wait.

I offered to help him out to take a break, hands as stiff as olds maps.

We exited the small room, shoulders touching as he faced me.

"Can you let it out?" He asked.

"Not yet" I shook my head.

Newts hands found my cheeks, making their way down towards my waist as he softly pulled me closer, hugging tightly.

"I’m not gonna let them take you" he whispered.

"Second-in-command number one priority" he stated, throwing a joke I didn’t catch.

"I’m not afraid for me" I mumbled against the skin of his shoulder, lips pressed onto his collar bone.

The boy breathed heavily, he didn’t need to ask.

His eyes locked on mines as he shifted.

His lips started moving but he quickly beat back what he was going to say, his eyes falling shut as he sighed.

The grip got loose as he pressed his forehead onto mine, "you don’t know how much I’ll give up to go back to that night one more time" he whispered, his eyes closed, his teeth pressed on his lower lip.

I smiled, taking in his scent, his presence.

"I never told you" I confessed "but I always suspected I knew you before all this mess, no way we got this close in so little".

"I’m glad you found your way back, then" he breathed.

I smiled, fondly.

"Let’s go" I broke the hold, slowly pulling his arm, Newt, sleepish smiling, followed me.

The next hours are a blur in my head; we arranged the big building just like we did the night it had rained, Newt ordering around to take food and any valuable object inside the building.

It felt like preparing to go to war.

I hardly left Newt’s side as I helped him accomplish tasks.

A couple hours before dawn we spotted Thomas and Minho’s figures slowly making their way towards the Glade, running at a defeated stance.

"Nothing new" muttered Minho, hands on his knees as he caught his breath back.

"How is it going with the code?" Thomas asked.

You know it. You asked her didn’t you? 

The boy looked ashamed at the ground.

"Pretty well, checked before, the shanks I choose are working their hands out." Newt.

"Good that" muttered the brunette.

"If what Gally said is true.." Eyes shooting my way.

"They’re gonna take someone else tonight" I mumbled, silence answered my statement.

They’re gonna take someone tonight, one of the faces I was looking at, would have disappeared, through a whole on the wall, or by the door, or anywhere the Grievers liked to go.

As the first ray of silver aimed for the Glade, a loud scream in the distance broke the chatting. 

Gladers hurrying inside the building, as Newt shut the door. 

Night begun and none of us was ready.

chapter 22

I took the opportunity, turning around.

"Look Blond, you’re fine, really, I appreciate you, but this is not gonna work."

Newt’s face was between the amused and confused.

"You appreciate me, that’s a start." 

The boys laughed.

"Come on Newt, i don’t want to work with Gally an hour more, let alone a whole week!"

"She has a point" whispered Minho.

"I’m sorry Love, that’s how it works" 

If it wasn’t for the sweet nickname I would have jumped for his throat again.

"Fine, but don’t come scolding me if one day or another I punch him in his face"

I stood up, leaving the boys, making sure I bumped my shoulder against the blond’s one.

Hearing a chuckle leave his mouth, I left for the gardens, stopping on my way to look at the maze.

I had to do something, search for something, a hint, anything really.

That is why, that day, I turned around sprinting for the Deadheads.

The air was strangely stiffer there and the temperature higher; it was hot, very hot.

I tried to keep my thoughts in order.

I was searching for something, anything.

I knelt on the ground, looking for something small: a sign, a word, a memory.

Throwing some dirt to the side, I found surprised that at the end of the big tree hovering me, something was hard underneath my hands.

That’s when I found some words sculpted in the concrete: World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department.

As my eyes were scanning precisely the phrase, in the right corner of my eyes I spotted a silver light.

A little, strange animal was looking at me.

He was horrible and his body robotics.

He looked at me, confused; then his eyes went red and the thing aimed for my face.

Reacting quickly, I dodged it, but I wasn’t lucky enough, as the animal broke into a dozen little blades, piercing through my hand.

The pain was unbelievable, but what came after was even worse.

I opened my eyes quickly; I was no longer in the Glade.

My clothes were clean and a hand was holding my arm.

There was a girl, or better, I was the girl.

I didn't control my body, neither my words, but I felt her pushing, screaming, as someone way stronger was holding her, me, back.

"Let me go!" 

"Don’t take him"

"Stop!"

"Stop!"

My words became lower as I was screaming them, I tried to look in front of me.

Someone on the other side, was being dragged away from me, but he was hidden behind some men, as they were pushing him forward.

"We can’t keep her this way!" The man behind me yelled.

"Go with the swipe, now!"

"What? But she’s not supposed to go up in weeks."

"Just do it!" 

And back I was, head on the ground, hand bleeding like crazy, a headache pumping in my head.

I tried to get up, but groaned when I found it more difficult than necessary.

I pushed my good hand onto the ground, trying to steady myself.

Then I ripped the end of my shirt, rapping the clothing around my hand.

I sprinted, as fast as I could, leaving dead trees behind, eventually making my way back to the Glade.

As i searched around frenetically, I tried to remember which hut belonged to the med jacks, but someone sprinted my way, stopping me from walking.

"What happened?"

"It hurts!"

"What? Where?" 

The blond searched my body quickly, looking at the spot where my shirt was ripped and touching softly my stomach.

"Not there you shank, my hand!"

As his eyes fixed on the cloth wet with blood, I found it incredible how his eyes got determined, clean, not a sign of doubt, not a sign of fear.

I realized that that probably was the reason he was second-in-command.

"With me, now."

He took me by the shoulders, heading me towards the med jack hut.

As we entered, the smell of bandages and blood entered my nostrils, and I felt like throwing up.

"What happened?" Asked the boy who looked at me quickly.

"Beetle Blade" firmly answered Newt.

At this point I was starting to pant, my chests heavy, more from the memory than the actual pain.

"Here" Newt made me sit on a chair, my hand landed on the small bed in front of me, the med jack on the other side.

As he took the cloth off, we watched in horror as my hand had been tore and ripped all around, blood still spilling.

In between the cuts, almost visibly, the letters of Newt’s name were spelled.

"What did you do to them? Looks like they were pretty mad. Beetle Blades don’t attack unless you touch them" 

I didn’t listen, my head felt heavy and I reasoned I would have fainted in seconds, and that would have happened if Newt didn’t try to talk me out of it.

He knelt on the ground on my right side.

His left hand shoot to grab my chin.

"Look at me" 

I was still breathing heavily and I started to feel cold sweat on my forehead.

"Tonight Fry’s cooking chicken, he said you liked it and I asked him to do it"

"What?" 

It was the worst moment ever to talk about that night menu, but the blond kept going.

"What, you don’t like it?"

"I don’t know I may do" 

I was mostly confused as I felt the med jack remove quickly one of the blades, the pain making me scream.

"Talk to me!" Newt said, turning my head again, this time holding my good hand in his.

"Squeeze it as much as you want, but don’t get distracted."

I looked at his brown eyes and I tried to keep up with his talk.

"What was the question again?"

"Chicken"

"Yeah chicken is fine with me"

Another blade, another scream.

I was holding Newt’s hand as if I was holding into dear life.

"Well what do you want to do after?"

"After dinner?"

He nodded.

"What can we do, we’re stuck IN HERE!" 

Newt’s hand was turning white as I kept on holding.

"I’m taking you to the tower then, alright?"

"Tower?" I asked feeble.

"Mh, the view’s amazing from there"

Another blade.

"Newt? I think I’m gonna faint" 

"No Love, you’ll stay right here with me, just keep on focusing on me"

And I did, I started with is soft hair, going in all directions, then lowered to his little frown ending in his slim nose.

His eyes were popping out, as his mouth moved.

I realized for the first time since I came out of the Box that Newt really was good looking and he probably didn’t even know it.

"I’m sorry" I whispered, looking at his hand. 

His eyes softened as he smiled slightly, "it’s fine, just stay with me" 

I nodded, turning to my left, realizing that my hand was being rapped with some bandages.

It was over, the pain was over.

"I’m surprised you didn’t throw up" the boy in front of me said, his skin was dark but his eyes were darker.

"She’s a tough one Jeff" Newt laughed, squeezing my shoulder, his other hand never leaving mine.

I laughed, dizzy: "Guess I’m not gonna work with Gally after all"

Newt’s smile, if possible, got wider: "unbelievable".
