Man, it has been a spell since I read this one. It was 1991. Who’s the Boss was still on the air and Covid-19 wasn’t even a twinkle in humanity’s eyes. Such simple times. Thirty years later, who would have thought that this comic would be the most valuable comic in my collection? I sure didn’t. I don’t remember a god damned thing that happened in this comic. Domino was more memorable than Deadpool, who just seemed like another cookie cutter Liefled villain with a stupid name. I hope . . . I hope I don’t hear Ryan Reynolds’ voice when he talks. Scenes don’t get any more Rob Liefeld than this. Big boobied high heeled secretary in a mini dress clicking her way across the floor. Fat businessman in a plaid suit doing nothing but staring out the window of his penthouse. Is this how Rob thinks people drink coffee? They just chuck it to the back of their throat without putting their lips on the mug like they are doing a shot of fireball? At least the coloring looks nice. (New Mutants #98 – Feb 1991)

Very little happens in this comic so I’ll just skip to the main event. I have to admit, Deadpool’s depiction here is slightly more interesting than the typical Rob Liefeld villain. He actually has a unique voice, (which I unfortunately can’t get to not sound like Ryan Reynolds in my head). It’s not as extreme as the modern interpretation of the character, but all the typical Deadpool mannerisms and character dynamics are there, and he’s already annoying Cable within a few panels of his first appearance.

Maybe we have Fabian Nicieza’s script for that. Is he getting any of those big time Hollywood bucks for helping create Deadpool or is that all going to Rob Liefled? The fact that Rob Liefeld has become so successful because of these gaudy old New Mutants comics proves that there is just no justice in the world. He had the sheer luck to be put in a position where he could throw a million crappy creations at the wall of a mainstream comic book and by the pure grace of God one of them happened to stick. I mean sure Domino is here too but if she wasn’t in the mix with these characters at this very moment no one would remember who she is either.

And it was all futile anyway. Rob would almost immediately abandon all of these creations to go off to Image comics and create comics and characters whose names I truly have no chance of remembering. Was there a blond guy? Seriously. And it would be left to other, far more talented creators like Joe Kelly and Kyle and Yost, to actually do the work of making something substantial out of these characters. And do they get the credit they deserve? Not nearly enough. (New Mutants #98 – Feb 1991)
