Val Monk is the author of 2 books on New Zealand iconic pottery Crown Lynn. She told Aunty Renee to pass the message to Uncle that there was a Crown Lynn sale today at Te Toi Uku (Crown Lynn & Clayworks Museum at Ambrico Place, New Lynn). After Morning Mass, Uncle was there in a flash. He spied a Graffiti bowl for sale on Val Monk’s stall, and had to have it, after introducing himself to her of course. Also bought were 3 Echo dinner plates, to add to the 3 he already has. The Echo design is nostalgic to him; it was the dinnerset his host family had when he arrived in Glen Eden. Happy with his purchase, Uncle made his way back to the car park. He spied a blue ”Coffee To Go” truck parked alongside Arjun’s Supermarket. Unable to resist, he took a picture, only to be accosted by an angry man who called him ”rude” and ”did you ask permission.” I said the coffee truck was parked in a public place. But his tirade and name calling continued, ”it’s not for sale so you can’t take a picture. Just piss off.” Knowing he was on a hiding to nothing, Uncle retreated with some dignity intact, words of abuse still ringing in his ears.
