For decades, we believed in a simple formula for success:
🎓 Go to school.
📈 Get good grades.
💼 Land a “safe” job.
🏆 Work hard. Climb the ladder.
🛑 Retire with a 401(k) and peace of mind.
This story, often called The Career Myth, was a comforting narrative—one that made sense in the stable, post-WWII economy our parents and grandparents experienced. For a long time, it worked. If you followed the rules, you could reasonably expect job security, predictable promotions, and a decent retirement.
But today? That story is shattered.
And more professionals than ever are realizing the cracks in the system weren’t their fault—they were built in.
The Reality We’re Facing
We live in an era where:
📉 Loyal employees are laid off with a single email.
📉 Job hunting feels like a full-time hustle with no ROI.
📉 You're expected to do more with less… and smile while doing it.
📉 Raises barely keep up with inflation.
📉 Entire industries are disrupted by AI before workers can reskill.
Professionals are exhausted. Disillusioned. Burned out.
And yet, instead of questioning the system, many internalize the failure.
“Maybe I’m not trying hard enough.”
“Maybe I should go back to school.”
“Maybe I’m just too old/young/overqualified/underqualified.”
No. The system changed. The story didn’t.
And now, it’s time to tell a new story.
What Happened to the Career Playbook?
As a 20+ year career coaching veteran, I’ve worked with thousands of professionals. And the same three issues come up again and again when we talk about why The Career Myth no longer serves us:
1. The workplace evolved—our strategies didn’t.
The rise of automation, artificial intelligence, and remote work completely changed how work gets done. New industries are emerging while old ones fade. Entire job categories now require digital fluency and adaptability.
Yet, we still give the same advice: “Just get a degree.” “Just apply online.” “Just be grateful to have a job.”
Here’s the hard truth: applying for jobs through job boards is like tossing your résumé into a black hole. The average corporate job receives 250+ applications. Less than 2% make it to the interview stage. This strategy isn’t just outdated—it’s ineffective.
2. We were trained to be employees, not personal brands.
We were told that being humble, keeping our heads down, and doing our job well would be enough.
It used to be. Promotions were tied to tenure. Your manager noticed your efforts. Your value was recognized… eventually.
But in today’s noisy, fast-moving world, being invisible equals being ignored.
You can be the best at what you do—but if no one knows what you do, it doesn’t matter. Today, success requires visibility. That doesn’t mean becoming a narcissist. It means developing a voice, a message, and a presence that reflects your expertise.
3. Trust has shifted from institutions to individuals.
Let’s be honest—how many people truly trust their company anymore?
The Great Resignation, quiet quitting, and employee advocacy movements all point to one thing: people don’t trust institutions. They trust people. Real people. Colleagues. Experts. Industry voices who speak the truth, share their insights, and create value in public.
This is why platforms like LinkedIn have become more powerful than ever. It’s where modern trust is built. And where your credibility either grows—or disappears.
The Good News?
We are entering a new career economy, and it’s being led by professionals who’ve realized something critical:
You are a business-of-one.
And if you want consistent opportunity and security, you must become the CEO of You Inc.
That doesn’t mean quitting your job or becoming a full-time influencer. It means owning your value and learning to communicate it in a way that builds trust, earns respect, and attracts the right opportunities.
It starts by finding and using your PRO VOICE.
What’s a PRO VOICE?
Your PRO VOICE is the unique combination of:
💡 Your perspective
📚 Your lived experience
🎯 Your industry insight
🔗 Your communication style
It’s the essence of how you show up professionally—and how others experience your expertise.
When you learn to use your PRO VOICE effectively, especially on a platform like LinkedIn, you no longer have to chase opportunity. It comes to you.
You build credibility. You grow your influence. You get found for roles, projects, and partnerships that align with your true value.
All without selling out or burning out.

New 'do! 🤪 . No book pimping for today. Just doing something different. . A lil birdie told me the avatar thing didn't do it for him anymore and went the way of the dodo. True. Got you, lil birdie. I appreciate your chirp. I hope my dear feathered friend - and everyone else who happens upon my profile from now on - will dig on this uber-fresh b&w shot of mine. Can't see anything? Don't fret. You don't have to 😎 It may not be as quirky as my book cover but safe to say - - - no other can top it - right!? ;) . Now back to my cave to doing what I can do best. I may have new ideas to put on paper. .
