INSIDE ISSUE 33 // "It is difficult to look at one of Steven’s paintings and not discover a myriad of symbols. However, the bird is his one ubiquitous symbol. He sometimes refers to them as "agents of action", but they serve many purposes. "Very often, my paintings don’t feel complete without the presence of at least one bird or an avian symbol. They can be emblematic of so many things: freedom, hope, wisdom, weightlessness, or the presence of guardians, messengers, or spirits. They also lend a sense of motion, suggest the passage of time, or present a link to something outside the boundaries of the image." He goes on further to state, "It’s hard to explain, but the birds in my paintings seem to exist on another plane. They aren’t affected by time and space, yet still have agency in our world. They act as observers and sometimes intervene in our lives. They represent a form of innate, natural wisdom that humans only occasionally have access to. They live by example and can act as guides. The roles they can assume seem limitless and that’s why I enjoy using them so often."
